The fierce rivalry between Portland Pythons third round, ninth overall running back pick Antonio Summer and the San Antonio Marshals seventh round, twenty fifth overall safety pick Ryan Cobalt has officially begun as the two met during the pre-season for what will be the first of many match ups between the two teams. The Marshals hosted the Pythons in San Antonio last night for both team's season opener, and with a talent loaded roster on both sides it was set to be an absolute battle to the finish. In the end, the Marshals slightly edged out the Pythons in the fourth quarter to hang on to a victorious 17-14 score, but in no regard was it a game that could be defined as a definite win for the Marshals. It was expected by many that this game between Summer and Cobalt would be the spark to get both team's seasons under way, and they sure were right as the two immediately began to butt heads about half way through the second quarter. After gaining fifteen yards for his team on three downs, Summer was beginning to edge on Cobalt's nerves and the adrenaline was pumping through both players as Summer took another ball shortly after and broke into the field. Almost instantly, Cobalt rushed in and took Summer down, limiting him to three yards and keeping the Pythons in field goal distance.
The two would ram into each other again late in the third quarter while the Pythons were within striking distance at the Marshals eight yard line. Pythons veteran quarterback Joliet L. Christ opted for the safer option of handing the ball off to Summer, who took it through the middle before Cobalt brought him down with peak precision at the one yard line. Cobalt began to taunt Summer, who made a motion towards Cobalt before being held back by his team mates while Cobalt continued to throw slurs through the line at the running back prospect. In what only could be described as karma, only seconds letter Summer was able to punch in the ball for a touchdown which would tie the game up heading into the final quarter where Summer was heavily limited to only seven yards before the Marshals eventual victory. Summer spoke out after the game about his outburst towards Cobalt, as well as his first game in the DSFL as a full fledged player and the Pythons loss.
I don't think this was really the result that we expected, but it was good to go out and shake out our first loss against a team like the Marshals, who will obviously be competitive. It was definitely nice to be rewarded with offensive player of the game, as well as to score my first touchdown with the team. As for the Cobalt situation, he's nothing short of a mockery of the game. He doesn't even appear to have the desire to play football, and seems to be more present in order to infuriate me.
