Let’s take a look at the entire Tight End situation for the upcoming Season 15 NSFL draft
The NSFL Teams
Baltimore Hawks- The Hawks have very little need for a tight end this year and in my opinion will pass entirely. With Verso L'Alto just beginning to show his age a front office might normally look tight end here but the Hawks have the luxury of the second highest TPE earner at the position being in Baltimore as well. Declan Harp has not yet begun to show any downward slide and seems to still be in peak physical condition.
Possible Draft Choice(s)-NONE
Colorado Yeti- Though Balthazar Crindy will show a bit more of his age this season it is hard to expect much of a drop off from the star’s numbers of last season. Colorado, however, could be in the market for a young tight end to groom due to their current back up, Alvin Chipmunk, actually being older than Crindy. Though Chipmunk was productive in the backup role and that could allow Colorado to lean towards positions of need for 1 more season.
Possible Draft Choice(s) - Mid round value with J.Irving or late round flyer on M. Rood.
Philadelphia Liberty- With 0 TPE earner, Ladarious Ansong, actually still seeing the playing field, the Liberty come into the draft in need of a tight end desperately. They pick 9th overall and would absolutely love to see Chase Jensen fall to them.
(EDIT: I missed the fact that the Liberty signed Zapp Brannigan.{Thank you @124715 } This means they will most likely not use a first round pick on a tight end)
Possible Draft Choice(s) –Chase Jensen or Cameron Olsen in the first, Dan Wright in the second, any tight end available at the right spot.
Yellowknife Wraiths- Adrian Pitcher being the only tight end on the roster immediately qualifies this as a position of need for the Wraiths. Add to that the fact that Pitcher has not developed as they had hoped and looks to be a low tier tight end his entire career and you can bet the Wraiths will come out of this draft with one of the top 2 tight ends.
Possible Draft Choice(s) –Chase Jensen or Cameron Olsen in the first, Cameron Olsen or Dan Wright in the second.
Arizona Outlaws-Following a 2-12 season the Outlaws have plenty of needs. With up and comer Steven Moore locked in as a starter and solid contributor, surprisingly, tight end is not among their needs.
Possible Draft Choice(s) – Possible last round flyer on M. Rood.
New Orleans Second Line- Between receiving threat Tyler Swift out of the backfield and young, star in the making, Stan Francisco at the tight end position, New Orleans will most likely not be looking to add a tight end this draft.
Possible Draft Choice(s) – Possible late rounder on T. Hoss.
Orange County Otters- Eventual superstar Johnny Blaze has the tight end position on lockdown for the Otters. They could look to bring in a serviceable back up but not at the expense of a high value pick.
Possible Draft Choice(s) – Possible late rounder on J. Irving if available or T. Hoss.
San Jose SabreCats- The SaberCats seem fairly set at the position with solid contributor Zapp Brannigan and capable backup Ronnie Williams. Though coming off a championship gives them the luxury of the best player available mantra, I don’t see a tight end landing in San Jose this season.
(EDIT: See edit above Zapp Brannigan has joined Philadelphia. That creates a rather large need at the position for the Champs.)
Possible Draft Choice(s) – Dan Wright in the 4th would be too good to pass up.
Chicago Butchers-Expansion teams should always have the philosophy of best player available. This means Chicago could be a possible destination for any of the available tight ends.
Possible Draft Choice(s) –Chase Jensen, Cameron Olsen, Jammerson Irving, Dan Wright, Timmy Hoss, Michael Rood, Luke South.
Austin Copperheads- Expansion teams should always have the philosophy of best player available. This means Austin could be a possible destination for any of the available tight ends.
Possible Draft Choice(s) –Chase Jensen, Cameron Olsen, Jammerson Irving, Dan Wright, Timmy Hoss, Michael Rood, Luke South.
The Draft Eligible Tight Ends
Dan Wright-TPE: 233
League Activity Level: Very High
Games-14 //Receptions- 33//Yards -158//Average -4.8//Longest - 15//Touchdowns-1
Stuck behind Chase Jensen at Palm Beach, Dan had difficulty finding the playing time to really turn heads on the field. His per catch average should be a problem of the past as his speed has seen a steady increase throughout the season. He is currently looking faster than he ever has in his career. His above average strength will serve him well at the next level and he has very capable hands for a big man. Due to lack of production in spite of all the tools this guy could be the steal of the draft if he drops below the second round. I believe his hard work will pay off come draft day.
Michael Rood-TPE: 112
League Activity Level: Low to non existent
Games-14 //Receptions- 26//Yards -234//Average -9.0 //Longest - 22 //Touchdowns-1
Having not been seen in over a month the chips are falling on the possibility of this prospect going undrafted. With plenty to work on and most of the effort dropping off it seems Michael Rood is ready to move on with the civilian side of his life. It really is too bad as his production behind Chase Jensen was something to take notice of. The difference between Rood’s fall and Dan Wright’s gain on draft day will surely teach the youngsters the value of hard work.
Timmy Hoss-TPE: 186
League Activity Level: High overall, lacking recently
Games-14 //Receptions- 44//Yards -312//Average -7.1//Longest - 19 //Touchdowns-3
Timmy Hoss is a question mark headed into the draft. He has all the tools of a solid tight end but the production just hasn’t been there. His activity has fallen off since season end but. Possibly, he is one of those players that prefers peace and quiet during the offseason. He has the speed, hands and strength to make it in the League. Many are just looking for him to put it all together for more than a half of football.
Luke South-TPE: 50
League Activity Level: None
Games-14 //Receptions- 7//Yards -66//Average -9.4 //Longest - 15 //Touchdowns-0
Luke South had a decent career at Michigan State but was not willing to put in the work after school. Michigan State is one the biggest “party” schools in the Midwest and perhaps Luke partied a bit too hard. I can only speculate as to why but it is clear Luke was not willing to give the next level a try. It’s a shame too because he showed the skill to be a possession receiver for a team in need. Luke should and most likely will go undrafted.
Chase Jensen- TPE: 285
League Activity Level: Very High
Games-14 //Receptions- 65//Yards -817 //Average -12.6//Longest - 37//Touchdowns-1
Chase Jensen is the cream of this year’s crop of tight ends. Some would say he could go number 1 overall! This man was born working out and hasn’t stopped yet. His numbers at the combine were consistently top 2 at his position. His production last season at Palm Beach was second to none. He finished top 5 in every receiving category outside of touchdowns. I see the team that invests a first round pick also providing Chase a specialized coach to teach him some tricks of the trade in the red zone. If he gels with his Quarterback, touchdowns could go from a blemish on his resume to a strength in just one season. Chase looks like to be the complete package and a superstar to be.
Cameron Olsen-TPE: 261
League Activity Level: Very High
Games-14 //Receptions- 66//Yards -453 //Average -6.9 //Longest - 26 //Touchdowns-3
Cameron Olsen is clearly the 2nd best tight end available this season. Barring a surprise of enormous proportions he will be drafted as such. His high Wonderlic score shows he is more than ready for the playbook difficulties of the next level that can so often derail rookie seasons. He showed his path to stardom by hauling in 66 catches last season, good for 4th league wide. Placed in the right offense this kid will be the perfect possession receiver and safety blanket for any quarterback.
Jammerson Irving-TPE: 230
League Activity Level: Medium
Games-14 //Receptions- 62//Yards -574 //Average -9.3 //Longest - 34//Touchdowns-1
It's a good year to need a tight end, as this is a talented and deep class. Jammerson Irving is the speed king of the group. Though his production didn’t show this to be true, it could have been due to the routes the Luchadores were using in the tight end role. He led all tight ends at the combine with a time of 4.38 in the 40 Yard Dash. He did finish the season with 574 receiving yards, 2nd among all tight ends. His average per reception was a decent 9.3 but with his speed I expected a lot higher to be honest. It seems his overall activity is a bit low but his updates are routine and consistent. His speed alone may bump him into the 2nd round if a creative offensive coordinator has his eye on him. It is more likely he falls quite a bit further due to his activity.
