Double draft media - 627 words
The season 16 draft class was not the deepest by any stretch of the imagination. Of course, there is still some great talent coming out of it, but in what is dubbed as the "sandwich class," stuck in between two largely recruited draft classes, the amount of players is lacking. That still didn't help my mock draft of course, but I digress. In this shorter draft, let's take a look at how my Otters did.
Orange County simultaneously had a boring and an interesting draft, depending on how you look at it. The Otters came into the draft with the 8th, 18th, and 28th pick. We already knew that the 18th pick would be used to pick Hugh Mongo, our GM's wide receiver, and the 28th pick was likely to be an inactive with the slim pickings of players, so there was great anticipation for who would be picked 8th. And then, they traded it away, and thus there is no new rookie to look forward to harassing, other than speculadora who we harass already anyway. Bummer. Let's take a look at the picks that did happen (lol) and the trade to see how this played out for the Otters.
Round 1 - Pick 8: TRADED TO AUSTIN
Otters Receive:
Shannon Hobbs
Gordon Ramsey Jr.
Right to swap OCO S18 Rd 1 for AUS S18 Rd 1
If the difference between the OCO S18 Rd 2 and AUS S18 Rd 2 is 4 picks or fewer, then OCO has the right to swap picks
Copperheads Receive:
OCO S16 Rd 1 Pick 8 (Selected: Mako Mendonca)
Shannon Hobbs is a season 10 player who unfortunately hasn't had an update since January. However, he is a Safety with 334 TPE, so he can provide some depth at the position immediately after losing Danny Grithead and with Mason Brown fighting regression. This is a solid pick up with better skills than a rookie could provide at this time.
Gordon Ramsey Jr. is in the same boat, a season 11 cornerback that also stopped updating in January. This is unfortunate, but CB depth is necessary for this team. Until the secondary is bolstered up, we'll hope this guy can step up if needed.
The Copperheads ended up taking running back Mako Mendonca, who is a solid prospect, but after getting a great back in last years draft in Apollo Reed, it doesn't seem that the Otters would have benefited from that pick anyway. This seems to be a win-win so far, but the S18 draft will be very interesting if the Otters end up doing well and swapping for higher picks with Austin. Some speculate that this draft will occur after a r/NFL recruiting campaign, so it could be a good sized draft class.
Round 2 - Pick 18: Hugh Mongo - WR, 217 TPE
A pick that surprised nobody, as GM picks occur in the second round, the Otters got their wide out with their 18th pick. Speculadora knows what he is doing, and is earning TPE at a steady rate, so nobody on this team is worried about how he'll perform. After losing D'jango Anoai to the expansion draft and Carlito Crush to retirement, wide receiver was a big need for this team.
Round 3 - Pick 28: Evan Trigg - DE, 50 TPE
Well, they had to pick someone I guess. Evan Trigg sadly is inactive and will not be doing anything for this team barring a miraculous comeback. Oh well.
In all, the Otters and a lot of teams in general were hamstrung by a thin draft class. However, I feel that the Otters did the best with what they had. They got some depth in their secondary, and they got their WR of the future. Looking ahead to next year, that draft will undoubtedly be more exciting.
