6. Palm Beach Solar Bears
Yards/Game - 184.0 (5th)
Comp % - 65.2 (6th)
Yards/Att - 8.27 (6th)
Sack % - 4.3 (6th)
Opp. QB Rating 112.4 (6th)
The Solar Bears actually have the second best run defense in the league in terms of yards per game, but the pass defense has left much to be desired and is a major factor in the team's winless start. Palm Beach ranks last in nearly every pass defense category and only has 1 interception and 4 passes defended (every other team is in double digits) on the season.
5. Kansas City Coyotes
Yards/Game - 135.8 (2)
Comp % - 59.3 (5)
Yards/Att - 6.31 (4)
Sack % - 6.5 (3)
Opp. QB Rating - 87.5 (5)
Kansas City has apparently been lucky that opposing teams have not thrown the ball more often against them. The Coyotes have seen the fewest opposing pass attempts, despite being near the bottom of the league in most efficiency categories. Despite the lack of attempts, the Coyotes have given up the second most passing touchdowns and have only picked up two interceptions.
4. Norfolk SeaWolves
Yards/Game - 179.8 (5)
Comp % - 48.1 (2)
Yards/Att - 6.66 (5)
Sack % - 4.4 (5)
Opp. QB Rating - 66.9 (3)
Norfolk's statistical profile indicates a team that has problems with the deep ball. This is evident in the very low completion percentage allowed compared to the high volume of yards allowed. Only Palm Beach comes close to the SeaWolves in terms of yards per completion allowed (13.8). Getting pressure on the opposing quarterback has also been an issue, which has likely allowed the longer routes to develop.
3. San Antonio Marshals
Yards/Game - 155.8 (3)
Comp % - 53.6 (4)
Yards/Att - 5.66 (3)
Sack % - 7.6 (1)
Opp. QB Rating - 75.8 (4)
The Marshals have been solid but unspectacular on pass defense, with the exception of the defensive line which has gotten into the backfield more often than any other team. Star-in-the-making Louisiana Purchase has compiled three interceptions in four games, but no other defensive back has yet forced a turnover. Look for this talented team to improve throughout the season.
2. Tijuana Luchadores
Yards/Game - 186.3 (6)
Comp % - 51.5 (3)
Yards/Att - 5.64 (2)
Sack % - 5.7 (4)
Opp. QB Rating - 56.5 (2)
Very much the opposite of Kansas City's story, where teams have tried to throw the ball frequently against Tijuana but probably shouldn't. The Luchadores have allowed the most passing yards in the league, but purely due to volume, as they have seen 22 more pass attempts (132) than the next highest team (110) - despite boasting the second most efficient pass defense in the league. Tijuana also leads with seven interceptions.
1. Portland Pythons
Yards/Game - 109.0 (1)
Comp % - 42.0 (1)
Yards/Att - 4.36 (1)
Sack % - 7.4 (2)
Opp. QB Rating - 36.9 (1)
The biggest story in the early season has been the dominance of Portland's defense, which has only allowed 7.3 points per game. The Pythons lead nearly every pass defense effiency category, and usually by a large margin. It is fair to point out the Pythons have played a rather easy schedule so far (3-13 opponent record), but this level of dominance has still been truly impressive. The only question is if this kind of performance is at all sustainable.
