Hello to my 3 readers (including myself grading this later). I recently found that the sim has a newspaper and actually awards players of the week on offence and defense and figured it would be a cool retrospective on my rookie year in the league. I fully expect plenty of Portland Pythons and Tijuana Luchadores to appear in the list solely because they were the best teams in the league. One thing I want to point out is if you play offense and you aren't a halfback, this isn't the article for you.
Week 1 Game Recaps:
44-3
36-24
44-24
Offensive Player of the Week: Luchadores RB Ducky Donut
In the first week of the season, Ducky Donut was ridden until his legs fell off. With 117 yards and 2 touchdowns on 26 attempts, Donut pretty much carried his team to a convincing victory over the Kansas City Coyotes. As the sim helpfully points out, this performance brings Donut's season total to 117 rushing yards after one week.
Defensive Player of the Week: Coyotes LB Maurice Virtanen
On the other side of the ball, someone had to stop Donut. Who else than Maurice Virtanen? Virtanen earned 20 tackles in this game, setting the tone for his season as a defensive player of the year nominee. The leading TPE earner for S18, Virtanen put on a show despite the loss to Tijuana.
Week 2 Game Recaps:
27-20
44-20
38-0
Offensive Player of the Week: Marshals RB Ruff Ruff
Ruff Ruff followed up an 86 yard and 2 touchdown performance in week one with a stunning 129 yards and 3 touchdowns on just 16 attempts. This amazing statline helped form the beginning of an MVP caliber season from the Marshals halfback as they took a large 24 point victory over Tijuana.
Defensive Player of the Week: Pythons S AC Payton
In a shutout, the Pythons get their first member to grab player of the week honors. With a measly 3 tackles but 2 interceptions and a touchdown, Payton helped his team grab a shutout over the Coyotes. One could believe that this performance was inspired by the desire to one-up the previous defensive player of the week Maurice Virtanen.
Week 3 Game Recaps:
16-6
31-7
41-7
Offensive Player of the Week: Marshals RB Mathias Hanyadi
The other fantastic Marshals halfback proved that he wasn't just a second option. Nearly doubling his stats from the first two weeks, Hanyadi racked up 158 yards and 2 touchdowns on 29 attempts. The increased workload for the backup halfback worked wonders for the Marshals as they completely blew out the Coyotes.
Defensive Player of the Week: Coyotes LB Net Gaines
Even in a losing effort, Gaines managed 14 tackles and even got himself a sack. While I don't think a player on a defense that gave up 41 points could be a player of the week, you can't deny his production. In a 34 point loss, Net Gaines "absolutely dominated" this game according the to newspaper.
Week 4 Game Recaps:
45-20
30-7
24-14
Offensive Player of the Week: Pythons RB Rkansaw NA
While not putting up a dominant statline, the man behind the newspaper decided to claim NA as the player of the week with 134 yards and tacking on a touchdown. I would not consider this a fantastic statline but the Pythons did in fact score 45 points in the game. Rkansaw was a major factor in that output.
Defensive Player of the Week: Pythons S AC Payton
Grabbing his second straight defensive player of the week honors and sweeping the honors for the Pythons, Payton had his second straight game with interception returned for a touchdown and added 11 tackles. Pythons defensive coordinator said after the game, "AC has the unique ability to make plays and generate turnovers." It is fortunate for the Pythons that Payton decided to unretire at the beginning of the season.
Week 5 Game Recaps:
40-21
21-10
27-14
Offensive Player of the Week: Seawolves RB Marcella TÃfâ€|Ã,Ãriki
Norfolk's first representative on this list is Marcella TÃfâ€|Ã,Ãriki, a first round pick from the DSFL draft and the eventual league rushing leader. Having an abusive 41 carries to beat the Palm Beach Solar Bears, Marcella TÃfâ€|Ã,Ãriki covered 158 yards and hit paydirt for 2 touchdowns. TÃfâ€|Ã,Ãriki was instrumental in Norfolk's first win of the season en route to becoming a first round pick in the NSFL draft.
Defensive Player of the Week: Marshals CB Louisiana Purchase
It's about time that Purchase was recognized. I firmly believe that Purchase should be the defensive player of the year this season. In the pounding of the Pythons, Purchase intercepted potential league MVP Jay Cue twice, with one of those picks resulting in a touchdown. On top of forcing two turnovers, Purchase earned a respectable 8 tackles at the cornerback position.
Week 6 Game Recaps:
45-0
24-6
20-20
Offensive Player of the Week: Coyotes RB Michael Vincent
While lacking elite yardage with only 109, Michael Vincent certainly found the endzone this week. It only took 6 games but Vincent finally got a touchdown, scoring 3 in the biggest victory of any team this season so far. This performance helped the Coyotes rebound from a disappointing loss the previous week.
Defensive Player of the Week: Marshals LB Allen Josh
A former first overall pick in the DSFL draft, Josh did his part to salvage a tie out of an ugly game with the Luchadores. By tallying 10 tackles and 2 sacks, Josh did more than he was expected in order to snatche a tie from the jaws of defeat. This is San Antonio's second straight defensive player of the week award.
Week 7 Game Recaps:
33-10
37-27
28-20
Offensive Player of the Week: Marshals RB Mathias Hanyadi
Being the first offensive player to earn two player of the week honors, Hanyadi had almost 200 yards in a large win over Norfolk. Hanyadi had 190 yards to go along with 2 touchdowns, proving once again that he can thrive as the lead back with almost 40 carries. When Hanyadi shows up, he shows up big. 4 of his 5 touchdowns have come in two player of the week games.
Defensive Player of the Week: Luchadores S Wayne Howyanow
For being the second best team in the league, this is just Tijuana's first appearance since week one. Howyanow was important in a very close win over the Pythons, scooping up two fumbles and taking one to the house for a score. An often overlooked prospect at the safety position, Howyanow always shows up at the most important times.
Week 8 Game Recaps:
27-15
17-16
31-15
Offensive Player of the Week: Pythons RB Pack McTaco
The second Python running back to make the list, McTaco is a speedy devil. McTaco scampered for 165 yards on the ground and scored once, leading the offense to a revenge win against the Marshals at home. McTaco only had about 400 yards on the season until this game. This was really a coming out game for the rookie halfback.
Defensive Player of the Week: Marshals LB Allen Josh
The second honors on the year for the Marshals linebacker, Josh had 11 tackles, 1 sack, and even had a safety in a losing effort to the Pythons. Once again, Josh did what he could to stand out and help his team but ultimately couldn't deal the win in a premier performance.
Week 9 Game Recaps:
20-6
27-13
31-10
Offensive Player of the Week: Coyotes RB Maurice Vincent
In a recent trend, we've had players pick up their second player of the week awards in the season. Vincent is no exception, pounding for 137 yards and 2 touchdowns on only 14 attempts. In a stunning blowout win against the Luchadores, Vincent was huge in keeping the chains moving and keeping the explosive Tijuana offense off of the field.
Defensive Player of the Week: Pythons LB Otto VanJensen
A surprise to be sure, but a welcome one. VanJenses was a top performer in the Prospect Bowl and has now made his mark in the DSFL, earning 4 tackles but also 2 sacks in a fantastic effort by the Python defense to keep the SeaWolves to only 6 points.
Week 10 Game Recaps:
17-3
28-14
20-14
Offensive Player of the Week: Luchadores RB Ducky Donut
Yet again, we have a player in the spotlight for their second time in the season. The first owner of the offensive player of the week award, Donut rushed for 127 yards and the deciding score in a 6 point win against the San Antonio Marshals. This game put Donut above the 1000 yard mark on the season and also out him at 9 touchdowns through just 10 games.
Defensive Player of the Week: Seawolves LB Marlo Smart
Marlo Smart is proving that tackles are still an appreciated statistic by having 14 of them in a close loss to the Luchadores. Smart also earned himself a sack in order to earn his first defensive player of the week honors. This also gives Norfolk their first representative on the defensive side of the football. Bizarrely, Smart's DSFL record of 25 tackles in one game didn't earn him a player of the week awards yet this performance did.
Week 11 Game Recaps:
26-0
30-3
16-14
Offensive Player of the Week: Luchadores RB Chase Osborn
The Luchadores join the Marshals and Pythons in the club of having two different halfbacks win the offensive player of the week award. Osborn put up 131 yards and a touchdown as he very quietly is matching Donut's production over the season with nearly identical season stats. This is Tijuana's second award in a row, showcasing how dangerous this Luchadores offense can be.
Defensive Player of the Week: Pythons CB Mervin Leonard
In a great effort by the entire Python defense to only give up 3 points all game, Mervin Leonard shined against the Solar Bears. Having 8 tackles and grabbing 2 interceptions, Leonard finally established himself as the best cornerback in the league as he beats up on rookies as a capped corner. The leader of this defense, Leonard's performance shows how scarily opportunistic the Python defense can be.
Week 12 Game Recaps:
23-10
13-10
23-13
Offensive Player of the Week: Pythons RB Rkansaw NA
His second award of the year, Rkansaw NA was a threat in the rushing game and the passing game this week. On the ground, NA put up 101 yards and a touchdown. Receiving passes instead of handoffs from Jay Cue, NA caught 3 balls for 20 yards and another touchdown. This is the first time an offensive player of the week has had a receiving touchdown, mostly because the formula must like rushing yards and touchdowns. This game put NA above 1000 yards on the year.
Defensive Player of the Week: Luchadores S Howard Ryan
Howard Ryan is a first on this list. In a 10 point win over the Marshals, Ryan amassed 12 tackles from the strong safety position in the Tijuana defense. Along with the tackles, Ryan also got an interception return for a touchdown, bolstering his stats in an impressive season. Ryan's takeaway and score was a huge difference in this slugfest of a game. Ryan is the second different safety to earn defensive player of the week for the Tijuana Luchadores.
Week 13 Game Recaps:
35-25
24-17
17-14
Offensive Player of the Week: Seawolves RB Marcella TÃfâ€|Ã,Ãriki
Earning her second offensive player of the week honors, the former rugby star torched the Palm Beach Solar Bears for 152 yards on the ground and 3 touchdowns. With only one game left in the season, TÃfâ€|Ã,Ãriki is up to 1650 yards and 8 touchdowns on the year as the primary halfback in Norfolk. In a horrible year for the Seawolves, TÃfâ€|Ã,Ãriki has been the lone bright spot on offense, arguably being the league's most valuable player.
Defensive Player of the Week: Pythons S AC Payton
Being the first player to earn player of the week honors 3 times in one season, AC Payton picked up 13 tackles, 1 sack, and 1 interception in an important 24-17 victory over the Luchadores to secure home field advantage in the Ultimini. Suffering from short term memory loss, the Pythons defensive coordinator once again said that "AC has the unique ability to make plays and generate turnovers." Payton must be so good at making plays and generating turnovers that the coaches can't help but repeat themselves.
Week 14 Game Recaps:
27-14
20-16
19-7
Offensive Player of the Week: Marshals HB Mathias Hanyadi
In the very last game of the season, Hanyadi becomes the 2nd player and only the first offensive player to earn player of the week honors 3 times this season. Hanyadi put up 129 yards and 2 touchdowns to end the season with a victory against the Seawolves. This stellar performance ends Hanyadi's season at 1430 rushing yards and 8 rushing touchdowns while helping lead his team into the playoffs against the Tijuana Luchadores.
Defensive Player of the Week: Solar Bears CB Kacey Dream
In the very first representation for the Palm Beach Solar Bears, cornerback Kacey Dream helped put away the best team in the league on the road in a stunning upset. Making 4 tackles, 2 interceptions, and even 1 touchdown, Dream helped secure a 13 point win for the Solar Bears to end their season strong.
Most Individual Appearances
Offense - RB Mathias Hanyadi with 3 appearances
Defense - S AC Payton with 3 appearances
Most Team Appearances
Portland Pythons with 8/24 appearances
San Antonio Marshals with 7/24 appearances
Tijuana Luchadores with 5/24 appearances
Kansas City Coyotes with 4/24 appearances
Norfolk SeaWolves with 3/24 appearances
Palm Beach Solar Bears with 1/24 appearances
Portland and San Antonio combined for 15/24 appearances, an impressive feat that showcases how many dominant individuals these teams roster.
Conclusion: Every single offensive player to win the offensive player of the week award is a halfback, while the defensive player of the week had a fair distribution between safeties, linebackers, and cornerbacks. Palm Beach had the least unique players with just one to capture an award, which is explained by their lack of good players. One surprising statistic from this exercise is that San Antonio had so many more appearances on the list than the Tijuana Luchadores, who are allegedly the better team. Players like Rkansaw NA, Ducky Donut, Michael Vincent, Allen Josh, and Marcella TÃfâ€|Ã,Ãriki were able to grab player of the week awards twice throughout the season.
I also want it to be known that neither Zach Hall or Joseph Wozneek made it onto this list because they are the worst players in the league for sure. Jake Watson out.
