Here I am with another edition of NFL recap and NSFL comparison. I did pretty decent on my picks this last week, but anyway onto the recap.
Jaguars over Titans
The Gardner Minshew show was off to a hot start on Thursday night in Jacksonville. I thought for sure the Titans defense would allow the Titans to win this game, but that wasn’t the case. The Titans offense is awful and didn’t manage to score until the 4th quarter. Marcus Mariota isn’t gonna be a starter in the NFL for much longer. I wouldn’t be surprised if Ryan Tannehill got a chance to start soon if things continue like this for the Titans.
I had the Jaguars as the Yeti and the Titans as the Seawolves. Guess I should have made my pick based off that, because I wasn’t far off.
Panthers over Cardinals
Cam Newton hurt his foot and Kyle Allen came in and looked great. Now granted, the Cardinals defense is one of the worst defenses in the NFL right now, but still it was nice to see Allen come out and help the Panthers get their first win of the season. A much needed win at that. The Cardinals offensive line got dominated by the Panthers pass rush allowing 8 sacks and forcing Kyler Murray to throw 2 interceptions on passes he made under duress. Christian McCaffrey broke off a 76 yard run to put the game away late. The Panthers are going to be without Cam Newton for a good chunk of the season as he deals with a lis franc injury and honestly they might be better off without him at this point.
My comparison here would be a NSFL DSFL matchup that would end up similar to this outcome.
Bills over Bengals
This was a closer game than I thought it would be, but the Bills came out of it with the win. Their defense is definitely one of the best in the NFL right now and 2nd year quarterback Josh Allen keeps them competitive.
The NSFL team beat the DSFL team. Not a surprise.
Cowboys over Dolphins
The Dolphins are probably going 0-16 this year. I don’t know if I’ve ever seen a team that is this bad. Not much else to say.
Again the NSFL team beat the DSFL team.
Packers over Broncos
The Packers defense has been the star of their season so far. Aaron Rodgers has done just enough to help the Packers win their games, but hasn’t put up monster stats yet. He might open it up more against teams with worse defenses. The Broncos continue to struggle. They’ll win a few games, but I expect at most 4 wins from them this season.
It seems all the matchups this week so far are an NSFL team against a DSFL team and so far the NSFL is undefeated.
Colts over Falcons
The Colts lead the entire time and came out of the half up 20 – 3, but the Falcons played much better in the 2nd half and made it a close game. Jacoby Brissett threw two touchdown passes in the first half and also completed a large amount of passes to open up the game. This Colts team is very good even without Andrew Luck. Devonta Freeman looks like a shell of his former self. He is no longer the dominant offensive force he once was.
The Hawks lost to the Outlaws in their lone matchup this past NSFL season. Not a good comparison.
Chiefs over Ravens
The Chiefs continue to put up huge points in the 2nd quarter. 23 points against the Ravens in the 2nd was about all they needed to put this game away. Mahomes against Jackson didn’t disappoint. Mahomes ended up with 3 touchdowns and 374 yards passing. Jackson put up 267 passing yards and another 46 rushing yards and a rushing touch down. The Ravens defense kept the Chiefs in check in 3 of the 4 quarters, but they couldn’t hold them in check in the 2nd quarter and that was the difference in this game.
The Butchers actually beat the Outlaws last season, which is opposite of what happened here.
Vikings over Raiders
Unsurprisingly, the Vikings took care of business at home against the Raiders. Dalvin Cook put up another 100 yard performance on the ground, which is the recipe for winning for the Vikings. Their defense held the Raiders to only 14 points. Cousins had an efficient 15/21 for 174 and a touch down through the air. The Vikings seem to do much better when they can run the ball at least 64% of the time. When they have to pass more is when they lose.
Another NSFL team beating a DSFL team
Patriots over Jets
The Patriots are too good. The one negative I could even come up with for them is that Sony Michel has not looked good so far this year. That doesn’t matter much with the overall talent they have, but it’s just something to keep an eye on.
Liberty lost to the Wraiths in both matchups, which makes sense for this outcome.
Lions over Eagles
Is it time for Eagles fans to start panicking? If they lose tonight I think the answer is yes. I’m surprised by their start as I thought they would be one of the top teams in the NFC. Now it looks like they will be fighting to be a wild card team. The Lions are off to a decent start at 2-0-1. They really should be 3-0, but gave up a win in week 1 against the Cardinals. I still think they are the worst team in their division, so things will probably come back down to earth for them very soon.
The Yeti split with the Wraiths in their games this year. The Lions won’t play the Eagles again, but I think they would split if they did, so an accurate comparison here.
Giants over Bucs
The Giants came from behind and stole a win from the Bucs in this one. The Bucs kicker missed an easy field goal at the end of regulation that would have won them the game. Daniel Jones actually had a good game to start his career. Unfortunately, Saquon Barkley is hurt for the next 6 to 8 weeks and that will make things much harder for the rookie quarter back. Mike Evans had a monster game with 3 touch downs and a long catch that put them in field goal range that should have won them the game. Will Daniel Jones continue to look impressive, or will the absence of Barkley cause him to struggle?
The Second Line split with the Copperheads this season, which makes sense for this outcome.
Texans over Chargers
The Chargers defense let Deshaun Watson throw for 351 yards and score 14 points in the 3rd quarter. The Chargers have now lost back to back games, which is something they didn’t do at all last season. Melvin Gordon will be returning soon, which should help the offense have a spark. The defense needs to get its act together before they have to play teams like the Chiefs twice. The Texans have sure looked good so far this season and I expect them to continue to win games. The battle in the AFC South definitely looks like it will come down to Texans and Colts.
The Outlaws beat the Otters in both their matchups this past season. I’m not sure if that would happen here or not.
49ers over Steelers
This was a close game, but the 49ers came away with the win to start the season 3-0 for the first time in quite a few years. The Steelers on the other hand are now 0-3 and are looking like they will be on the outside looking in when it comes to playoff time. The 49ers have taken care of a pretty soft opening schedule. They will need to keep it up if they want to challenge the Rams in the division.
The Liberty lost to the Sabercats this year, which doesn’t line up with this, but it’s always hard to win without your quarter back.
Saints over Seahawks
This was probably the biggest surprise outcome of the week for me. Don’t pay attention to the final score, this wasn’t as close as it looks. The score was 27-7 coming into the 4th quarter and some garbage time scores are the only reason the score was closer than that. Teddy Bridgewater did what he needed to do to help the Saints win, but lets be honest, the real reason the Saints will be fine without Brees is because of Alvin Kamara. His ability to make the first man miss is unparalleled.
The Wraiths beat the Butchers both times they played this season. I think that would happen here too.
Rams over Browns
The Browns defense kept them in this game, but it wasn’t enough. Baker Mayfield hasn’t looked very good so far this season, but a big part of that I think is due to how terrible the Browns offensive line has been. If they could give him some more time to pass the ball the Browns might be 2-1 or 3-0 instead of 1-2 and possibly facing a 1-3 start. The Rams haven’t looked as electric as they did last year, but so far they are doing a good job of evading the dreaded super bowl loss hangover.
The Wraiths actually lost to the Otters this season, which is not what happened here.
Bears over Washington Football Team
The Bears defense is very good. Also, Trubisky had a decent day and had a great 2nd quarter as he threw 3 touch downs all the Taylor Gabriel. This Washington team has not looked good so far and yet has refused to put their first round quarter back Dwayne Haskins into the game. I don’t understand why they don’t give it to him to see what they’ve got.
The Butchers beat the Yeti in both machups this season, which matches up here.
Now for my Week 4 picks.
