You know I’m back when the power rankings start. Now you may say, tlk, you’re going to be out of the country starting week one, can we really rely on you to give us the hot takes and great power rankings you are known for giving us which have on occasion gotten a team to thunderdome you? The answer to that is assuredly yes. I can only assume that by watching less, my rankings will be better. So who’s ready for some fun power rankings.
As will all power rankings, please understand that the methodology is who would win most of the time when they face off in an even scenario. I try to make the rankings have as little bias as possible and the comments to have the explanation. They will offend some people. I accept that. It is meant in good fun, keep that in mind.
Oh and in old tradition, I wrote, edited and organized this. Please send 33% of the money to me, 33% of the money to me, and 33% of the money to me.
1. Orange County Otters
Look, if you’re expecting anyone but the defending champion before a snap is played, you are probably due to check and make sure you got a lot more right. So the Otters have the fifth general manager ever. That’s crazy. The loss of Spec obviously means that the Otters have some of the largest shoes to fill going forward but it will be interesting to see how it goes from here and how the team progresses, but with how that locker room is built it feels like no lost piece is truly lost for long. Per the sim (end of this season), Orange county is ranked 5.
2. Yellowknife Wraiths
The statement probably is, last season was the Wraith’s, and Orange County pulled off an upset. Let’s break it down. The spooky boys put up the most points for last season. The defense was nothing to write home about, but it was better than Orange County, and honestly Bigsby put up a great season compared to his peers. But with teams on the rise, can Yellowknife shore up their defense this upcoming season and secure their second Ultimus win? Per the sim (end of this season), Yellowknife is ranked 1.
3. New Orleans Second Line
Heck yeah, first time where the sim and I have agreement, the Doots at 3. So what is holding New Orleans seeing their first Ultimus win since the Darren Smallwood era? If I had to pin it on one thing, it has to be their passing game. I know applying a NFL mindset, in a passing era is dumb, but bear with me for a second. Stan has to throw the ball further, averaging under a 7.0 Y/A in the game and the second worst completion percentage. That stepping up will help bolster the already killer running game and super strong defense that allowed the second fewest points of any team.
4. Baltimore Hawks
Another match with the sim. Go me. Anyways, here’s the team I see most likely to jump up and take the Ultimus with continued success. It is Baltimore. No team allowed fewer points as the defense was stingy allowing only 266 points, or less than 3 touchdowns a game. The offense did well too, so not sure why they’re ranked so low, but they seem to be doing something wrong. Corvo Harvan had the best passer rating to boot. I got nothing.
5. Colorado Yeti
Last time I wrote them in a spot this high, the Las Vegas Legion were still a team. That says how well they’ve turned stuff around. Yes, I get it top half, but the difference between 1 and 5 and what is separating 8 and 9 is about the same difference. So that says a lot. McDummy was third in passer rating at the end of the season. However, the Yeti need to score more points, and yes I get that is football 101, but out of all the teams with 300 points, the Yeti is lagging, relying heavily on their run game for the touchdowns. The sim ranked the Yeti at 2.
6. Austin Copperheads
I’m biased here, but I think the Copperheads are set to make an impact this season. Their passing game has only gotten better and if they don’t get 300 points on offense this season, I believe that it will be a failure of a season for them, and they should likely look to retool everything, but with how young the defense is, expect this team to only get better. Autsin was ranked 6 on the sim.
7. Arizona Outlaws
The outlaws put up a decent point differential but I think this team is headed into a rebuild, I expect them to do the same as the hawks, but in the other direction. The question is, when will the rebuild end before this team returns to form? Sim had them at 8.
8. Philadelphia Liberty
I am curious to see how they go. It’s very clear that superstar QB Falconi had a down year, but the question is, do the Bells make a chance to go for one last push with the best QB they have ever had at the helm or prepare for the future? The sim had them at 7, and honestly I don’t disagree with flipping them and Arizona, as their luck on the road was just abysmal going 1-6 but here we are.
9. Chicago Butchers
Through a slew of missteps and mistakes, the Butchers find themselves here. No picks in the draft, but with a few people updating, the Butchers may surprise a few people. I wouldn’t write them off, that said, I want to leave with this. When asked in the expansion draft who was set for success long and short term, the answer was unanimously from the booth Chicago. This team ranked 10 in the sim power rankings.
10. San Jose Sabercats
Only team to score less than 200 points last season is in San Jose. They ranked 9 in the sim, 187 is just horrendous.
