Defensive Tackle
Disclaimer
1.) I'm not a football guy. I never played, I don't watch it often (Brett Coleman is lit tho), I probably never will. My opinions are probably gonna be a little shit. Because of that if you bitch at me for being stupid in here I'm not going to care.
2.) This isn't actually a new engine, it's just my idea for what I would want.
Defensive Tackle[/div]
Now we come to the defensive tackle, a player similar to the defensive end but different in a very distinct way. Both are going sacks, but whereas the ends are going to be pass rushing you can expect to be shutting down the run game. That means focusing more on not getting pancaked by the offensive linemen and stopping them from creating separation up the middle. A lot less about getting around or through the line and more about creating pressure on the quarter back to give opportunities for your defensive ends to get sacks and stopping runs up the middle for big gains. That means the position might be one of the simplest ones on the field. It's all about Strength, Technique and Tackling skills. If you can get through the line to be a part of the pressure on the quarter back that's a huge plus, but in my opinion the main reason you're there to stop the run and give your pass rushers on the ends a better opportunity to get to the quarter back.
Strength - The player's raw strength
Endurance - The player's ability to continue to be effective during long drives
Quickness - The player's ability to change their style of attack quickly
Scheme Recognition - The player's ability to correctly identify they play that the offense is going to run and to decide how to attack the player that will receive the ball off the snap or immediately after the snap
Acceleration - The player's ability to quickly reach their top speed
Speed - The player's top speed
Catching - The player's ability to catch (or deflect) a contested ball
Defensive Moves - The player's ability to get around the player blocking them with some sort of fake out or trickery
Tackling - The player's ability to bring a player with the ball down or move a player blocking them out of their way
Technique - The player's footwork and ability to put themselves in the best position to get through or around the opposing blocker, generally their ability to form the correct plan for the start of a play in this context
So based on how similar the skills you need for playing defensive tackle are to the skills you need for playing defensive end you're going to have the same attributes, but their usefulness will be weighted much differently.
1.) In this case there are no if's, and's or but's, about it. The most important attributes are going to be Strength, Tackling and Technique. Force two offensive linemen to pick you up on every play and you give someone else a better opportunity to break through the line, or allow someone to be double teamed in the backfield. They'll also keep you from being pancaked and allow you to better break through the offensive line. Quickness will be a big help here because of the defensive tackle incorrectly predicts the play, say it looks like a passing play but it ends up that the full back is lead blocking up the middle they'll need to adjust as quick as they can to prevent the running back from gaining big yards on them. This will mostly be dependent on the line backer but if the defensive tackle is taken completely out of the play the consequences of the run could be much worse than if they were able to at least occupy the center or guard and maybe get a touch on the running back.
2.) Endurance will be big here. Each play you're taking the brunt of the work on the line. There are going to be very few downs where you aren't going head to head with at least one offensive lineman. That means in addition to being extremely strong you're going to need the stamina to step up play after play to push the line back. No downs off here. In many ways this is a less rewarding position than defensive end, but you're going to make just as much of a difference because of the cascading effect a truly dominant defensive tackle can have on a play. Breaking through the defensive line up the middle or stopping a run is all it takes to change the complexion of a drive.
3.) Like the defensive ends Catching will be used very rarely, only even moreso. It's not super often you'll get a chance to jump in the air and deflect a pass up the middle. On the ends there will at least be shallow cross routes that you can recognize and jump on. Up the middle there's essentially a zero percent chance that'll be in a position to deflect the pass so it's arguable that catching shouldn't even be on the list of attributes, but if you're playing on a team with two defensive tackles it's possible. This is a dump attribute I suppose.
[div align=\\\"center\\\"]Some Extra Notes[/div]
Sometimes I wonder about this position, like why we differentiate it so much from the defensive end. It makes sense that we do it, but why don't we do the same thing with offensive linemen then? I understand that we do outside of the NSFL, we have left tackle, left guard, center, right guard and right tackle, but in the NSFL we've lumped them all together. Likely I suppose this is a result of the NSFL offensive linemen being mostly bots, but does that mean with more offensive linemen members that will change? Somehow I doubt that.
I think this is my least favorite position on defense because of the lack of change between plays. Defensive ends switch up what they do but the tackles seem to just always be powering themselves forward toward the offensive linemen. In any case they're the defensive equivalent of an offensive lineman so although I'd never want to be one I can respect them for sure. Digging in the trenches for the squad.
