Hello! Agent Tesla here with the inside scoop on the S22 cornerbacks. I'm going to be doing one of these for each defensive position group as I only have one left to do after this. Without any further ado we'll get to my measurement system for these recruits.
I will group these prospects into four tiers. The top tier is elite and they should be the first off the board for their position. Second is solid starter and they should be high quality starters, but have one or two knocks keeping them from elite status. Third is diamond in the rough because I believe that any of these youths could turn it around, but they have not put in the work necessary just yet. While the last group is the question marks for those recruits that I just do not know enough about to endorse.
Elite
Thubba Bumper - Zone
Thubba Bumper first round grade on name alone. Thubba backs it up though with a strong work ethic that is befitting of a top tier corner. While usually a zone corner tends to be less athletic than their man to man counterparts; Thubba is every bit as athletic as a man corner. His speed is especially noteworthy when paired with his hands as he can snag passes from weaker receivers with ease. Bring him in early and watch as he erases one side of the field for you. Just make sure the people on the other side know what they are doing.
Chester Sweets - All-Around
Chester is such a sweet prospect you would wonder if Wonka was around. A multi-sport athlete who developed an ultra well rounded skill set as a result of playing so many sports as a youth. Demonstrated a strong work ethic from a young age, and ultimately ended up at San Diego State University thanks to its similar weather to Jacksonville where he grew up. Do not get the wrong idea though he is happy to go wherever he is drafted and should be an immediate contributor for that team. His diverse talents are great on their own, but it is his underlying potential that is what really excites me about Chester. Quite possibly the best corner in this deep draft.
Brandon Booker - All Around
A well developed tactician of a corner coming at you from Arizona State University. On the field he has all the right things that you want out of a corner and especially if you run a mix of zone and man since this kid can play either with the best of them. What makes him elite though can't be measured on the field as this kid is an absolute monster off the field. Absorbing everything he can in the film study room and lifting every weight he can get his hands on in the gym. Work ethic is absolutely absurd and is one of the best in the draft. Honestly draft this kid early and watch him make your entire secondary better by the end of the season. Just don't be surprised if he does not stick around long as he is destined for more than the DSFL.
Cadillac Harris - All-Around
The fastest gun around with an absurdly amazing all around game. Cadillac is quality as his name implies with a game that has no major weaknesses, and with proper coaching could be relied upon as either a zooming zone corner or a monstrous man corner. He has speed enough to keep up with most of the other athletic corner prospects in this draft which is obviously what you want. Where Cadillac excels though is his high football IQ that allows him to make plays on the ball, and I have also seen him coordinate the secondary on a few occasions. He also has pretty good mitts on him to take the ball back and may have ended a redheaded quarterbacks career back in high school from a nasty interception, but you did not hear it from me.
Eldrick Avery - All-Around
A big bodied versatile corner from Louisiana State University who is easily one of my favorite prospects this season. He checks just about every box you can ask for out of a prospect from his five star name that is clear as day, a work ethic that compares favorably to just about anyone in this draft class, and an attitude that works wonders in the locker room. I admit to having a bit of a soft spot for this kid as he suffered an injury the same season that my client Magnus did, and the fact that they both suffered one of the worst for their positions only to come back better for it makes me think this kid will be every bit the superstar my client will be. Eldrick if you are reading this and ever need advice from an agent feel free to hit me up.
Ozamataz Buckshank - Zone
I have to be upfront here that I may not have done the best job scouting this kid as he has an intimidating aura about him. That could be seen as a plus though as I know a number of great corners who have loved to play mind games with their opponents and just his stare alone is enough to make most people crack under the pressure. Going with his frightening countenance is his frightening fast speed that is unusual for a zone specialist. Played some safety in college and demonstrates the tackling skills you would expect from such. A two time captain the kid should be good for your locker room, but I admit I cannot confirm or deny given I avoided interviewing him. He seriously scares me, although he should be a good player for the league.
Zamir Kehla - Man To Man
Zamir is an interesting case as he has the speed, hips, and hands that you love to see in a man corner prospect. He also has a mouth like no one else though and if you feel you have a more sensitive locker room you may want to avoid the difficulty of that on your team. That said if you can tolerate his verbose nature he should be able to shut down number one receivers for you, and should be able to lighten the mood in the locker room whether the team is winning or losing. Personally I like the kid decently well and think he'll succeed wherever he goes, but I have to report what some of the other scouts say.
Solid Starters
Andrew Witten - Zone
With a name like Witten you know he has got to be good. His speed is more befitting a man to man corner and should be plenty to be effective as a zone corner right out of the gate. Has put work into his tackling leading up to the draft and should be reliable in that regard. High IQ player who can pick up on tendencies with the best of them and is a threat to break up plays all over their side of the field. Good enough motor to keep that pace up most of the game and so should be an early pick. Good coaching could turn Andrew into an outright superstar.
JR Maverick - All-Around
JR is a maverick both on and off the field with a unique vibe about him that I think works well for a cornerback. He is smart enough to play well regardless of the defensive scheme and so should be a top target for those that run flexible defenses. Fast enough to keep up with most of the prospects in this class, although not as fast as the most athletic of prospects. Also a reliable tackler which is always a boon at the corner position. Could use a bit of work on a few things here and there, but a lot of promise in this prospect.
Ben Stackinpaper - Man To Man
The name of a paper pusher but the speed of a Greek god. Straight line speed is just so out of this world that you would have to assume he was a track star in high school, but he in fact played basketball. Being a two sport athlete is proof for a prospect in my book, however basketball especially given how many offensive players come up playing it these days. Should be able t counter those kinds of moves better than most and could be an interesting prospect if you can round out his skill set some.
Xaq Schiaparelli - Man To Man
To start off with this kid has a fabulous name, and he also has a good enough attitude that I told him straight that I was looking forward to doing my scouting work on him. Not the most athletic of man to man corners in this draft as his speed is enough, but not noteworthy. Additionally his hips are good, but not exceptional. He makes up for that depending on your scheme though by virtue of the fact that he has the hands of a wide receiver and arguably the best hands of any defender in this draft. An arrogant corner that thinks the world of himself, although not a bad thing if you look at some historic cornerbacks. More of a mouth than a motor if I am honest, but if a coach can connect with him he could be great.
Diamond in the Rough
Jonathan Altidor - All-Around
Jonathan is a lean corner coming out from Fairleigh-Dickinson University. What makes Jonathan special is a combination of a few traits that make him a top flight turnover machine. He has the smarts and film work to know where he needs to be on the field to make plays. Got the speed necessary to make those plays no matter where you line him up on the field. Plus the hands needed to reliably catch those sweet interceptions. Could afford to put more work in once the season starts, but I have seen enough to think positively of him.
Rickety Cricket - Man to Man
Reminds me of an old rocking chair out on the porch of your grandparent's house that can just make you feel right with the world if only for a little while. Good tackling ability for a corner separates him from the pack. Quick hips is expected from his position, but is still nice. While his straight line speed is enough to outrun most wide outs. Needs a guiding hand I feel, but if you can get him in the gym he could be great.
Ricky Boomhauer - Man To Man
Boomhauer! He may not be as good as Boomtown, but he can bring the boom nonetheless. Not really since his sole specialty is speed, however I guess he could bring the boom by just running really fast at someone to blow them down. He is more likely to just try to sprint around to knock away the ball. Does have stamina to keep his speed up longer than most corners I have graded thus far. Really hope this kid takes the next step because he could be really good.
Bayden Brosley - Zone
Bayden Brosley is a quick corner coming out of Delaware. They play from the neck up with the best of them and when combined with their superior speed can comfortably handle most of a half of a field. They also have decent hands and hips from what I have seen on the tape. Leading up to the draft they have been working in the weight room and on refining their tackling form. Needs extra coaching, but shows a few positive signs that they can be coached up.
Alexander Hamilton II - Man To Man
A Princeton graduate who plays man to man at the cornerback position. Supernatural speed is what defines this man as he hangs around with the best receiver on the field. Lacks the endurance to keep up with true number one receivers all game long, but has untapped potential that I think the right coaching staff could unlock. I would just like to say here that I am sure that his mother is very proud of him and his accomplishments. I hope he comes and makes a big splash in the league.
Valor Gilmore - Man To Man
Valor is an unusual case when it comes to a man corner if I am being completely honest. Has a great name though either way, but I'll get back on topic. He is far more of a read corner than most man to man corners who rely on their athleticism to make plays. Tends to leave a bit of an opening as he reads the play out more than just tracking the body like most man to man corners. Good speed allows him to play either way, however I like his unique style. Get him a coach who can tap that unique talent and you'll be well on your way to a top tier secondary.
Matt Krause - All-Around
There are a lot of great football players named Matt if you go looking for them. Just a really great all around name for a good all around corner like Matt Krause. Not sure if he has any relation to the famous safety or not, but he does have a similar talent for taking the ball away. Being an all around corner there is not much to knock on him, however he just needs more polishing in general to make it to the big leagues. Bring him in and see if your coaches can work their magic with him.
Tyron Shields - Man To Man
Not sure if he has any relation to any of the famous football playing Shields members, but I do know he has the physique like his family was made to play the sport. Surprising speed from a man his size given he clocks in at over 200 pounds. Also got the hips to match up with just about any number one receiver on the field today. Needs to be found and given a good mentorship, but all the physical tools are there.
Colt Mendoza - Man To Man
A man to man cornerback out of the University of Wyoming named Colt Mendoza has to be a winning combination. Although not as fast as most of the man corners in this draft Colt makes up for it with a much more well rounded skill set than his competitors. Has shown some solid effort in the off-season programs, but not in the last few days. So a picture perfect diamond in the rough as he could be great if he shows back up, and if not you just get the rough.
Bo Jangles - All-Around
Bo knows athleticism better than most even if he may not know as much as the Bo that you know. Solid hips and speed, but has not been into any of the off-season programs in three days. Could be good if he came back and pounded out some productivity, but without that I cannot endorse Bo no matter how much I might enjoy his name.
Question Marks
Thunder Cat - Man To Man
A name straight from a high quality 80s cartoon deserves to be respected in every aspect. The fact that he has hips like the characters he is named after just makes it all the sweeter though as you watch him move with feline grace to bat away balls. Good speed is also befitting his name even if thunder is slower than lightning, as it is still fast enough to be frightening. Talent is there, but lack of effort leaves him a question mark.
Rico Martinez - Zone
If this were a quarterback I could make an over them mountains joke, but without that positional bonus I really got nothing here. Straight up not shown for secondary tests, and not a single activity after declaring for the draft. All the best to them, but as it stands now they are not a contender for the draft.
Alex Ingram - Man To Man
Sorry to break character, but I have to here. Straight up this person is inactive and has not been seen since the eighteenth and I am just really sad about that because they have a quality profile picture and they are a fan of the same football team as me. It happens though, but it is a potential friendship lost in my eyes. They have good stamina if you have to fill out your roster with inactive players. Best of luck to you as a GM either way. Also draft Magnus Rikiya round one. Thank you kindly. Oh and if the player behind this character miraculously comes online and sees this message me about football please.
BooBoo Rodgers - All-Around
BooBoo will always remind me of a webcomic referencing a Kevin Smith movie. Unfortunately this player is not Jennie Breeden, and have not shown up for any secondary tests. Minimal activity after declaring for the draft and disappeared almost a week ago. Best of luck in whatever their pursuit is now.
Jay Signs - Man To Man
They have not been seen in almost a week, but I just have to say I adore their name. My favorite letter just straight up being used as a first name is always nice to see, and it pairs well with their last name. They have put in work when it comes to sprinting, film study, and cardio that could make them useful to fill in a roster.
Xavier O'Doyle - Zone
Full disclosure this man has not been seen in almost a week, but just based off of his name you can trust this man. Xavier suggests that he has telepathic powers and can control the quarterback to throw straight to him and as a zone corner his hands are good enough to pick it off. Plus O'Doyle rightfully suggests he has the stamina to survive walking through a war zone day after day. Still should probably track him down before you draft him. Might be on the run from Sentinels.
Carlos Woods - Man To Man
Carlos Woods may have gotten lost in his namesake as he has not been seen around since he declared for the draft. I just hope the woods did not devour him alive as they have so many other innocent young draft prospects. Especially with his speed at the corner position. Best of luck to him whether he be lost to the fair folk or not.
Malcom Jenkins - Man To Man
Ultra fast man to man corner out of San Diego State University to fill up your roster. Missing since more than a week ago, but could provide depth in ghost form maybe? Honestly thought this kid was a safety, but I must have gotten him confused with someone else.
Kennedy Cannon - All-Around
Kennedy is an all-around type corner with decent speed for the position. Talent is there, but a lack of appearances in off-season programs turns me off of this prospect. Unless something changes Cannon is best suited as deep depth and not a starter.
Nick Jones - All-Around
A decent all-around corner with good agility, solid speed, and good endurance. Lack of appearance to anything this off-season leaves me unable to support them being drafted early. If that changes they could be a good candidate, but otherwise they are best drafted as depth.
Jacob Caine - Man To Man
Very fast man to man corner out of Texas A&M, but unfortunately might be so fast that he ran himself out of town. No signs of him in an off-season program, and nobody has heard from him for a week. Best of luck to him wherever he is now.
Cody Martin - Man To Man
Well he has the hips and speed that you expect to see from a man corner, but is this that kid from the Disney show? We haven't seen him for a week? And we can't confirm whether he is the kid from that Disney show? Darn it. Would have really loved to see a Disney channel star move up to be a top tier player in the league, but I guess that will just have to be a dream for the future.
Summary
Totals are seven elite prospects, four solid starters, ten potential diamonds in the rough, and twelve question marks. Top end talent is the best at this position of those that I have graded out so far. Double digit quality contributors should make this a good draft for secondaries. A lot of speedsters as well which makes sense given the position. Best of luck to the cornerbacks of S22 and may all of you outperform your draft position.
