Welcome to the End of Season S21 DSFL Power Rankings.
So the season as over, and since I don't think it's worth doing rankings after the playoffs, this will be the final power rankings for Season 21.
As always I've compiled rankings from the DSFL GMs and the wider community to create a weighted system which should give a relatively balanced results and is protected from a single team brigading the vote to put themselves to the top. It assumes people aren't lying about who they are or who they play for.
Overall Community Rankings
#1: UP 1 Myrtle Beach Buccaneers (9-5) (1.69)
#2: DN 1 Kansas City Coyotes (9-5) (1.88)
#3: UP 2 Norfolk Seawolves (8-6) (2.81)
#4: = Portland Pythons (8-6) (3.75)
#5: DN 2 Tijuana Luchadores (6-8) (5.00)
#6: UP 2 Minnesota Grey Ducks (6-8) (6.19)
#7: DN 1 Dallas Birddogs (5-9) (6.69)
#8: DN 1 London Royals (5-9) (7.63)
So our final overall rankings ultimately align to the final records which had four pairs of teams on each of 9-5, 8-6, 6-8, 5-9.
Myrtle Beach edge out Kansas City for the top spot and the two swap places, perhaps shaped by the fact that they hold tiebreakers to give them the top playoff seeding and homefield advantage.
Portland stay in 4th while Norfolk and Tijuana dance around them to trade 3rd and 5th spots.
A strong finish to the season takes Minnesota to sixth, while the expansion teams continue building but aren't yet the finished article. Of the two Dallas are given the higher ranking as they have been for most of the season.
Poll Responses
Overall votes were low, following a general trend of trailing down during the course of the season. However all teams were represented by votes this week.
Rankade Rankings
For a more impartial comparison I've also used Rankade to rank the teams based on the results.
#1: 2095 - = Myrtle Beach Buccaneers
#2: 2048 - = Minnesota Grey Ducks
#3: 2000 - = Kansas City Coyotes
#4: 1999 - = Tijuana Luchadores
#5: 1989 - = Portland Pythons
#6: 1930 - = Norfolk Seawolves
#7: 1818 - = London Royals
#8: 1801 - = Dallas Birddogs
At the end of the season here are the final rankade scores. And while they've shown some interesting long term, super-seasonal trends, within the season the shifts have been a bit slow and disappointing. It seems too much weight is placed on past results for the DSFL and its high turnover and rapid pace of change.
I suspect if would work much better for the NSFL. For next season it would probably be worth resetting ranks at the start of the DSFL season.
Current Ratings
How differently do different groups vote?
While the GM group and All Players groups were pretty consistent, individual teams showed some very idiosyncratic choices.
I'm not sure anyone has informed the Dallas players that they didn't make the playoffs cause they still think they're the top dog.
We also saw some conference favouritism with teams seeming to rank their conference opponents above the opposition. For example London put both Kansas City and Portland above Myrtle Beach (although that generosity didn't extend to Minnesota who they ranked last).
The two teams that fought their way into the playoffs on the final night, Portland and Norfolk are both bullish about their chances. They each gave themselves top ranking and hope their late season momentum will carry them to an Ultimini.
Another noteworthy vote was Minnesota tipping Portland to victory, and putting Myrtle Beach down in third place.
In fact despite having the top seeding Myrtle Beach were ranked third by 5 separate teams players.
Homerisms
A few homers came back out of the woodwork. Four different teams ranked themselves as the top team, and perhaps more amazing, Kansas City wasn't one of them. They were: Dallas, Myrtle Beach, Norfolk and Portland.
Dallas Birddogs - self rank: 1 - actual rank: 6.69
Kansas City Coyotes - self rank: 2 - actual rank: 1.88
London Royals - self rank: 6 - actual rank: 7.63
Minnesota Grey Ducks - self rank: 6 - actual rank: 6.19
Myrtle Beach Buccaneers - self rank: 1 - actual rank: 1.69
Norfolk Seawolves - self rank: 1 - actual rank: 2.81
Portland Pythons - self rank: 1 - actual rank: 3.75
Tijuana Luchadores - self rank: 4 - actual rank: 5
So The George Washington Cannot Tell a Lie award for honesty goes to... The Kansas City Coyotes, they not only refrained from giving themselves the number one spot, but also managed to rank all teams in the same order as the final overall rankings.
The Homer Simpson award for lack of perspective goes to... The Dallas Birddogs who lost all 4 games this week but ranked themselves 2 places higher than last week.
