[div align=\\\"center\\\"]Season Starting:
[/div]
As the season approached, I was fairly scared. We were a team, but not a brotherhood. We had a sputtering offense and an inconsistent defense. On the forums, we were consistently roasted, but nobody really stood up to any of the perpetrators and nobody seemed to care about anything except themselves. As we headed into week 1, I picked the Otters to win the division and had absolutely no faith in my prediction that we would even make the playoffs. But alas, the others remained confident to counteract my opinions.
[div align=\\\"center\\\"]Week 1:
[/div]
Of course, we had to play the favorites to win it all the first week. I was no doubt scared simply because the Otters were the favorite, whether it be because of actual talent or unnecessary hype was not clear. I did know that there was nothing I wanted to do more than absolutely smack the Otters against the wall for their totally cocky style of posting and talking on discord.
When I opened up the box score, I was absolutely stunned at the results. We won and it honestly wasn't that close as we pulled out the 27-12 dub. What jumped out to me when I first looked was that Mike Boss tossed 6 interceptions and we got a defensive touchdown from my guy Jason Williams. Offensively, we couldn't move the ball. Draxel and all of our running backs struggled to get yardage, but Stomblessed and Jefferson were both able to reel in catches. And we cut down to 3 sacks allowed, which made me happy.
On my side of the ball, I was able to chase down the ball 11 times and got a pass deflection in coverage. I thought that was solid, but I wasn't even close to a top performer on my side. Ryan Flock got 2 interceptions, and Isaiah Rashad upped him by one to reel in 3. And our recent acquisition Blaster Blade had 2 Tackles for Loss and a Sack. Oh yeah, he also forced a fumble. Needless to say, our defense was dominant and it was a good sign for the team moving forward.
[div align=\\\"center\\\"]Week 2:
[/div]
Simply put, we lost to an inferior team and we knew it. Our record dropped to 1-1 which sucked, but more embarrassing was giving up 24 points to the San Jose Sabercats. They aren't a terrible team, but their QB was inactive and we absolutely shut down the Otters. Vick Bowers Jr. and Demetrius Wiley were really effective and ran the ball over us. Our offense wasn't god awful, but it only managed to put up 10 points, which is a hard task for our defense to compete with. Mackworthy performed very well on his 10 carries, but I started to realize that Marcus Newman was dragging us down by being on the committee, as he took valuable carries away from Reg and Durden.
For the defense, Flock racked up 10 tackles which means that a lot of running backs were getting to the second level on us. Terrible news for me. I managed 5 tackles and one pass deflection, which is not what I want to see, I demand more from myself. Rashad was able to pull in another interception which had me thinking that he could be on pace to be the best cornerback in the league, especially if we could convince him to stay active for us. The worst thing was probably that we gave up 12 sacks. Luckily, we did get a new addition to our offensive line, Tim Pest, who allowed 0 sacks and had 6 pancakes. Dan Miller ate us up with 4 sacks while Jayce Tuck was a pressure monster for us racking up 2 sacks. Their defense simply outperformed us when it came to pressure, but not forcing turnovers. It seemed like regression and had me wondering if the first game was just a fluke or if week 2 was unlike us.
[div align=\\\"center\\\"]Week 3:
[/div]
On our redemption tour from pre-season, we were getting the chance to play the Baltimore Hawks, who had previously beaten us. You already know we pulled out the 21-13 win. Draxel jumped off the stat sheet to me. He had 260 yards and threw 2 Touchdown passes for us. A sign of progress for sure and was encouraging to see our young gunslinger doing so well. Another encouraging sign was that Durden and Mackworthy both averaged over 4 yards a carry. I was confused, however, as to why Durden was getting so many more carries than Reg throughout the first few weeks. It left my mind boggled. Jefferson, King Bronko, and Stromblessed started to look like an elite trio of wide receivers in this game as they carved up the Hawks' secondary. Oh, and Tim Pest started to look good again as he had 4 pancakes and only 1 sack allowed.
For me, I was ecstatic. I was our team's leading tackle with 11 tackles, rebounding from my previous outing. Stropko, Tuck, and Ernston all recorded sacks, which made me start to believe that we were elite, with one of the best pass rushes, linebacking corps, and front sevens in the NSFL. I could really picture myself, Valkootan, and Bushito becoming the best trio of linebackers around the league. We also shut down their run game and were pretty effective in stopping their quarterback from getting hot throughout the game. It was a great team win and a building block for momentum.
[div align=\\\"center\\\"]Week 4:
[/div]
Finally, I was getting to play Yellowknife, a team that I thought I would want to play for. I had nothing on my mind except showing them that they messed up by not drafting me. We were able to pull out a very, very narrow victory by a score of 14-13. In a defensive matchup, I recorded 8 tackles and a tackle for loss. I was, however, outperformed by Lindarius Shelton and the Hawaiian guy on the Wratihs' squad. Ernston tied me with 8 tackles to lead the team. Mayran Jackson finally had a slight coming out party with 5 tackles and a tackle for loss while Tuck, Asipi, and Dam all recorded sacks. My favorite defensive play was when Jason Williams notched another interception, however. Stropko let us know around this time that he was going to go inactive and that had me pretty scared.
Offensively, Draxel threw a touchdown to Jefferson and our trio of wide receivers continued to look like one of the best corps in the league. Jack Durden performed extremely well as he racked up 71 yards on the ground and maintained a steady 4.1 Yards Per Carry and pounding one in. Our line gave up 5 sacks again, with Tim Pest playing rather well, but Sharp sticking out like a sore thumb with his terrible antics and god awful technique. Alex Thomas was my MVP for the game as he opened up holes all game long for our running game and was able to amass 6 pancakes on the Wraiths.
This victory felt really good because this was a team that I was able to prove wrong for picking other linebackers over me. Even if I wasn't the most effective LB, I was the MIKE on a team that shut them down.
[div align=\\\"center\\\"]Week 5:
[/div]
A rematch? Hell yeah a rematch. I definitely felt confident about this game, considering we had just beat the Wraiths. This one, however, was on the road and that proved to be a challenge. We lost the game 27-21, but it was pretty controversial. With 41 seconds left, Draxel delivered a 16 yard strike to King Bronko, who was taken down at the one yard line. Instead of calling a timeout or running a play, our offense let the time run out and we didn't even run another play before regulation ended. From the 1 yard line. As a team we were pretty upset with the sim engine because we felt like it cheated us a game and we sank to a measly 3-2 record.
As a team, we were pretty solid in the loss. The offense racked up 387 yards and was very balanced. Both Durden and Mackworthy averaged over 4.7 yards per carry and pushed it into the end zone. Stormblessed went for 111 yards while Jefferson scored and Bronko caught 4 more passes. Defensively I led us in tackle again with 8. Asipi, Tuck, and Stropko all recorded more sacks. Ernston, however was on another level. He forced and recovered a fumble and was also able to reel in an interception, cementing his desire to be the league's best coverage linebacker for years to come. A tough lot, but with a lot of bright spots. And with 5 more hits on our quarterback.
[div align=\\\"center\\\"]Week 6:
[/div]
Yeah dude, fuck San Jose. This is the only team that beat us in pre-season and the regular season so far. We needed this game because they played like crap against every team against us. We were able to push our record to 4-2 and whip out a pretty easy 23-3 win where, once again, our defense dominated the game. Draxel was honestly not very good. He threw two picks and 0 interceptions against an average defense. It was rather upsetting considering that we needed offensive production. Jack Durden got a TD for his 3rd game in a row. Nugent also missed two field goals, which was terrible for us. The O-Line was terrible, once again, as they gave up 6 sacks. I couldn't help but feel bad for all the pressure that Draxel was experiencing.
Defensively, we were insanely good. Stopko got 11 tackles, I got 9, Flock got 7, and Ernston recorded 6 while forcing a fumble and recovering it. Tuck took the quarterback down twice and one of those went for a safety. Rashad and Williams also had pick 6's. If you're keeping score at home, our defense scored 16 of our team's 23 points. Oh yeah, let's not forget we also blocked a punt. You could say that we were really playing some solid defense. It was in this game that we all firmly believed in our defense. With the best defensive end in the game, best cornerbacks, and best linebackers, how could we not believe that we were could enough to stop any team's offense?
[div align=\\\"center\\\"]Week 7:
[/div]
Yeah back to back again. We got to play San Jose for the third time total and this was a way for us to break the tie. We were able to pull out to a 5-2 record as we won 20-12 in another dominant performance for our defense. As a defense we logged 9 sacks with myself, Ernston, and Dam each recorded one and Tuck, Stropko and Blade all recorded 2! We absolutely handled them in the trenches and nobody can deny that. I also racked up 7 tackles and recovered a fumble. The best player defensively was easily Brady Stropko as he landed 15 tackles, including one for a loss. It was a tackling clinic for our star LB. The DB's literally didn't have to do anything this game.
For the offense, Mackworthy was unstoppable as he had 74 yards on 11 carries. Stormblessed also hauled in 103 yards on 3 catches which was pretty big time. Jefferson reeled in a touchdown, as our offense really didn't have to do much once again. As I saw another dominant performance by the defense, I began to wonder if the offense was relying on us to win games, or if they just didn't need to do much because the defense was putting them in such prime positions. For us, being 5-2 gave us extreme confidence that we were going to win the division and pull out a championship if we kept playing at this level.
[div align=\\\"center\\\"]Week 8:
[/div]
A shootout, I tell you. In a rematch against the Hawks, we were undoubtedly the favorites. The Hawks were struggling and we were rolling. Unfortunately, we were too slow to pull out our guns and were downed 34-31 in the Wild, Wild West. Draxel threw for 300 yards and 4 TD's, while Jefferson had 2 touchdowns and Stormblessed had one as well, while both had over 100 yards. Jack Durden also caught a ball out of the backfield and took it to the house. Draxel through a pick 6, which proved to be a big part in the game as he couldn't seem to throw to the right team.
For me, life was good. I had 8 tackles, forced a fumble, and deflected a pass. We had 6 sacks and Tuck was responsible for two of them once again. With Dam, Ernston, Blade, and Tuck all finally coming to form as we slid Dam inside, our team was starting to reap the benefits of the front 7. We had questions as to the back end of our defense, especially as our corners started to go rather inactive, but we were able to hold down the fort in the front. This game solidified Tuck as the most disruptive defensive end and an obvious favorite to end the season with the most sacks in the league.
[div align=\\\"center\\\"]Week 9:
[/div]
Uh oh, rivalry game. We get to meet the Orange County Otters again in what has shaped up to be THE premier matchup and rivalry within the league. In between Weeks 8 and 9 there was a ton of chirping between the two sides and the whole league had it's eyes on this game. Entering the 4th we were down 7-5, but managed to score 14 and take the game 19-7. Yet again, Mike Boss had trouble telling which team was his and threw 4 interceptions to us. I had 8 tackles, and the big three of the linebackers each had a sack. For our defensive backs, they answered the calls. Isaiah Rashad had 3 more interceptions and Flock added another. Brady Stropko had 10 tackles and a safety to go with his sack as well. A simply dominant performance once again.
Our running game was really starting to pick up as Mackworthy and Durden combined for over 100 yards and both averaged over 4 yards a carry and Durden powered in another touchdown run. He was on an absolute tear and our offense did what it needed to do in the 4th quarter. Simply put, they came alive when they needed to and a Stormblessed touchdown sealed the game in the 4th. We simply performed when we needed to offensively and were able to escape the game with a solid win.
[div align=\\\"center\\\"]Week 10:
[/div]
In the final matchup of the season between the Outlaws and the San Jose Sabercats, we got our first look at Ethan Hunt as a quarterback. I was a little nervous after his first start, but I also thought that it was kind of a fluke and he would just end up being an average QB. We got the win to go 3-1 against the Sabercats and beat them for the 3rd time in a row with a 27-14 win. For our offense, we added Matt Vincent to our team and he caught a touchdown pass. Draxel passed for 277 yards and three touchdowns, which went to Vincent, Bronko, and Stormblessed. The big three of wide receivers all looked good and I was happy to see the offense get out of the funk that they had previously been in. We only gave up 3 sacks which was better than the previous matchups against the Sabercats. We got big performances from the OL and kicker so it was a pretty good put out.
For me, I only got 7 tackles which was pretty disappointing and didn't record any other stats. Stropko, Ernston, and Asipi all recorded sacks for us to set back the Sabercat offense. I was surprised to see Tuck not get a sack because he had been on such a roll and was against a rather inferior offensive line. We only had one pass deflection as a team and overall we didn't really record many stats other than tackles and a few sacks. Allowing 14 points is a pretty good feat meaning we only allowed 2 really solid drives.
[div align=\\\"center\\\"]Week 11:
[/div]
Prior to this game, ADwyer talked to us about how he planned on switching to QB because Draxel was inactive. Even though he had brought us to such a good record, it was crucial for us to have a quarterback set to help us out into the future. Bronko would become a good arm and hopefully somebody who competes to be the best quarterback.
This was a week that had me scared because we lost to them in the pre-season. We had to go up against Logan Noble and the Colorado Yeti. They had a strong defense and a lot of guys who could impact the game on the ground. Unfortunately, we lost to the Yeti by a score of 19-10. Draxel only threw for 112 yards, which was pretty disappointing as he couldn't move the ball. Our ball carriers averaged very good yards per carry except for Michael Newman, who inexplicably got more carries than everybody else. Reg Mackworthy averaged 8 yards per carry, but only got 6 carries. Durden averaged 6.7 yards per carry in as well, so it was weird to see Newman get so many carries. Overall, a bad performance from the offense as they got 8 first downs total.
Defensively, Dental Dam performed well as he had 10 tackles and got 2 sacks against the Yeti. I also got a sack with Blade and Tuck. Rashad reeled in another interception and made it clear that he was set on becoming DPotY and being the best DB in the entire league. Tuck also forced a turnover and overall it was a pretty good defensive performance as we forced 4 field goals in the game. We were still optimistic at this point, but we also realized that this could be a team we would play in the championship. A scary proposition.
