Over the course of the NSFL’s past 21 seasons players have set such a standard that, out of respect, no other may don their jersey number. There are currently 21 such retired numbers across 6 NSFL teams.
The San Jose Sabercats are tied with Philadelphia with the second-most retired numbers at 5.
Number 54- Vincent Sharpei
Vincent Sharpei played for the Army Black Knights before being drafted 4th overall in the S2 Draft by the San Jose Sabercats. The offensive lineman made his presence known immediately, within 2 seasons racking up 116 pancakes and allowing only 19 sacks. Before S4, Sharpei switched positions to fill in at middle linebacker, where he would play for the rest of his career. He was traded to the New Orleans Second Line after S6, where he would eventually win his only Ultimus (S9). By the time of his retirement, Sharpei had played in 6 Pro Bowls, was the Linebacker of the Year for S6, and landed on the Annual Tackles leaderboard, sitting at 3rd all-time with 140 tackles in S7. In his career, he also managed 32 sacks, 4 INTs, 31 passes defended, and a blocked punt. To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the team, the Sabercats inducted Sharpei into their newly-formed Hall of Fame. With this distinction, his number 54 jersey was retired.
Number 68- Dan Miller
Dan Miller started out at LSU before getting drafted by the San Jose Sabercats in the 15th rounds at 88th overall. The defensive tackle would prove to be a wrecking ball on the field, despite a lackluster record. Recording more than 50 tackles and 10 sacks consistently, the San Jose defense was propped up on Miller’s shoulders for their first few seasons. Following S6, he was traded away to the Colorado Yeti, where his excellence continued to shine. He set the franchise records for most sacks in a game and season, most forced fumbles in a season and most sacks in team history during his time in San Jose. Miller retired following S9, having played in 6 Pro Bowls and amassing 448 tackles, 17 for loss, and 132 sacks, the standing NSFL record. Miller was inducted into the San Jose Sabercats Hall of Fame in its inaugural class (alongside Vincent Sharpei), and thus his number 68 jersey was retired.

Number 81- Shane Weston
Shane Weston was a wide receiver for UCLA, and was drafted by the San Jose Sabercats in the 12th round of the S1 Draft, 69th overall. Nice. He played his entire career with San Jose, where he set multiple franchise records, especially as the team’s special team workhorse. At receiver, he set the following franchise records: 668 Receptions, 10,823 Receiving Yards (9th all-time) and 50 TDs. As a returner, he set franchise records with 10,847 for Return Yards and 21,670 for All-Purpose Yards. He currently sits at 8th all-time for Annual Kick Return Yards (1267 in S7), 4th all-time for Career Kick Return Yards (8827), 4th all-time for Career Punt Return Yards (2620), and 5th all-time for Career Punt Return Touchdowns (5). Weston was inducted in to the Sabercats’ Hall of Fame in the S12 Class, therefore retiring his number 81 jersey.
Number 11- Joliet L. Christ
Joliet Christ started his career at South Dakota before being drafted into the DSFL by the Portland Pythons ahead of S9. He was named the S10 DSFL Offensive Player of the Year, and in the same year he was drafted 4th overall in the NSFL Draft by the San Jose Sabercats. He was instrumental in the Sabercats’ powerful era, culminating in their only Ultimus win in S14. That season, Christ was named the Quarterback of the Year, NSFL Offensive Player of the Year, and won the NSFL Performance of the Year Award. He also won the NSFL Most Valuable Player Award in S13, alongside Marquise Brown of the Liberty and Julian O’Sullivan of the Second Line. By the end of his career, Christ played in 5 Pro Bowls and managed a passer rating of 87.3, the 8th best all-time. He was inducted into the San Jose Sabercats Hall of Fame in the S20 Class, thus retiring his number 11 jersey.
Number 24- Xavier Flash
Xavier Flash was a Florida Gator before being drafted by the Tijuana Luchadores ahead of S8. Tijuana would go on to with the Ultimini that year, thanks in no small part to Flash. He was drafted 1st overall in the S9 NSLF Draft by the San Jose Sabercats, and would win the Ultimini with Tijuana for the second time. By the time he would join the Sabercats in S10, Flash had set multiple records in the DSFL. He is still 1st all-time for Annual Receiving Yards (1,361 in S9), 2nd all-time for Annual Receptions (96 in S9), 2nd all-time for Annual Receiving Touchdowns (13 in S9), 7th all-time for Career Receiving Yards (2,364), and 4th all-time for Career Receiving Touchdowns (18). He was named DSFL Wide Receiver of the Year for S8 and S9, and was the S9 DSFL Most Valuable Player. Flash’s success continued into the NSFL, where he became a favorite target for Joliet Christ, as he seemingly could not drop a pass. He was instrumental in the Sabercats’ S14 Ultimus victory, and in the S20 Class, Flash was inducted into their Hall of Fame, retiring his number 24 jersey.
