Thomas Passmann’s lawyers have finally unveiled their main defense strategy at a pre-trial hearing. Faced with a supposed mountain of evidence that is not available to the public at the present time, some wondered why the evil vampire wouldn’t try to strike a plea deal to get as little time as possible. It now is understood; he thinks he can get off on the basis of insanity. His lawyers have consulted with multiple psychologists, and with a bunch of experts on their side and plenty of cash at their disposal, the judge’s ruling could go any way.
“Mr. Passmann is not in the best or the sharpest mental state which we will prove in court. His mental faculties are simply off, and to have him charged would be a disgrace to our legal system. We are certain that the judge will see our reasoning and know that anyone who genuinely believes themself to be a vampire is not mentally sound. Expert witnesses and videos from his past, as well as his social media statements, are certain to meet the burden of proof for our insanity argument. Our client will prevail and go home a free man soon,” said his lawyers in a joint statement.
Is Passmann in fact legally insane? Is he fit to stand trial in his current mental state? The state will argue yes based on the fact that he is fit to play football and that he seems to have enough reasoning skills to have laid low this entire season. This demonstrates an awareness of the legal situation he is in. They are not disputing that there is something wrong with him, that fact is plain as day to anyone following the case. There isn’t much precedent for a case of insanity with football and Satanism in the mix so the judge will really be breaking new ground.
Assuming he is found fit to stand trial, jury selection has gone over without a hitch. 12 people have been selected, and their names have been kept out of the media, although a few details from the selection process leaked. Anyone who has ever attended a football game or watched on tv was weeded out and sent home by the prosecution, while the defense removed everyone who claims to be a Christian, leaving the jury as mainly nerdy millennials. Only one boomer made it on the jury which upset some of them who declared the process to be ageist and biased. But neither side is making any apologies because they do not care who is offended by their decisions.
Passmann just returned from a lengthy trip across Europe, surprisingly not fleeing and going into hiding. He briefly told the media that there were many beautiful sights and monuments he saw as he traversed many different nations, and that visiting the continent had been a dream for him for many years. The trip was likely pretty expensive, but if he ends up behind bars, it could be for life, so he might never get another chance to see the world. Money wouldn’t matter in prison. He easily could have gone on the run, which would have reflected poorly on the American government and created a frenzied media fiasco. Nobody wants a crazy cult dude with fame and fortune becoming an international fugitive after all. It could have even caused diplomatic issues, as many governments across the world do not want Passmann to become their problem. How this could have happened is certainly troubling even if it worked out in the end. Alarm bells were set off after it was learned that he had been allowed to leave the country despite facing charges and being labeled a flight risk. But the government avoided an embarrassing issue when he returned of his own accord and was back on US soil in time for his court date. It is unclear why he came back when he could have gone somewhere without an extradition theory but many fans of the Arizona Outlaws believe he is becoming loyal to the team and did not want to leave them. Nobody knows how true that is but it would be very out of character for Thomas Passmann if it is true.
