It’s been 25 years since a Shubutan made it to the big leagues with Robert Staten heading to the Bucs in '96. Ronald Ollie was born that same year and there were high hopes for the big DT. Ultimately those hopes are fading… fast.
Step up L’Gazzy Burfict. Since committing to Rutgers he’s been going from strength to strength. A late developer physically, L’Gazzy now stands at 6’4”, tipping 255lbs in the recent weigh-in. You all will have seen his twin sister LaFawduh wearing the red and white of the Knights around town; she’s not the only one thinking that LB the LB can make his name in the game he loves.
Now just by watching a selection of his plays on YouTube it’s clear how the kid has been progressing in the North East. Sure, we know he has good strength for his size from his plays back in high school, but it’s the improvement in his speed which has taken me by surprise. Let me tell you, the kid has real quick feet and they are only going to get quicker. In my day the kids that size couldn’t move like that and I wouldn’t have had the career I did if they had.
Off the field he’s a straight up kid; he goes to class, calls his Mom each day, keeps himself out of trouble. Get him on the field and he flicks that switch. Hell it’s almost as if all he wants to do is get off the field; break up the play, top up his stats, take a seat back down on the sideline. A couple of concussions, including one in his game-winning tackle at Ohio State, don’t seem to have taken him off his stride.
Now it’s too early to predict where the kid could end up but I know the folks in Shubutan will be getting behind him. With that said, I can exclusively reveal today that he’s declaring himself for the ISFL. Go get ‘em L’Gazzy.
