The Dallas Birddogs may have lost their first game of this season but a lot of upsides were seen in the away game against the Tijuana Luchadores. Especially the rookies shined in the game and it showed in the stats and locker room after the game.
On the offensive side, the game ball went to veteran running back Zoe Watts who ended the day with 12 attempts culminating in 110 yards with a 61 yard run for a touchdown which nearly got the Birddogs back in the game. The showing also earned her offensive player of the game. Next to this veteran presence, the young Wide Receiver corps was also able to put up great numbers with Mark Callous accounting for three receptions totalling 58 yards.
The defensive showing was also dominated by Dallas’ rookies. Defensive End Raylan Crowder came up strong with 8 tackles and Linebacker Dick Leaking was able to stop the Luchadores 7 times with one tackle for loss. Romper and Theebaw as well as the veterans also performed well and instantly showed their contributions to the team on the stat sheet after the game. Bob Roberts said after the game that he is generally very proud of his one tackle although he knows he needs to put in more hours into training and fix some broken links in his training plan.
The defensive game ball went to Linebacker Guy Fields though. Dallas’ second-round pick had a strong defensive outing with 7 tackles and a defended passes. Emotions were strong in the locker room after the game but everyone seemed optimistic, even after the tough loss. Guy Fields was allowed to address his team after the ceremony where he received the game ball and did so straight away:
“I am so thankful to have received this ball and want to thank the coach and the GM for letting me address you all. We had a good game today, I love what you all did on the field, we played our heart and soul out. I know we all wanted today to end differently, we worked so hard and trained our asses off to get to where we are. This season is young, and I know we can do much more together because this game today was only the beginning of something great. This ball that I got from my first game in the league will always have a special place in my heart and I know that already but each tackle that I made, each pass I defend always comes down to us. To the team. If the coverage breaks somewhere else, I can’t make that tackle. If the DLine doesn’t hold up, I can’t make that tackle, this ball belongs to all of us and not only me. We will get stronger, we will train harder and we will dominate. I can only see one goal for the end of this season: The Ultimini. And I know together as a team we will work, work, work and work more. And we will get there. Team on three. One, two, three … TEAM.”
With everyone jumping in on the cheer it showed that even though the season starts with a “1” in the wrong column, the fight is there. Dallas won’t deliver wins to teams, teams will need to work hard if they want to beat them. With a home game against the Coyotes coming up the rookies and veterans alike want to show their crowd what they got and the goal of this season is clear, especially for Guy Fields: “Bring the first Ultimini to this beautiful city and the great people of Dallas that I welcomed me with open arms and make me proud to call this my home away from home right now. Go Birddogs!”
