Welcome to my “Player of the Week” awards. This edition covers week 4 of ISFL S25. Again, note that these are not official awards and are only my opinions. If you think differently, write your own damn media article. I will be naming who I think is the best player on both sides of the ball along with a few runners up, and also notable players who contributed on special teams.
First up, let's take a look at the players with the best offensive performances in ASFC:New York Silverbacks running back Ashley Owens was one of the few bright spots on the day, offensively, for New York, posting 117 yards rushing on 26 carries, with a 2 yard TD run late in the 4th quarter. Owens also had 5 catches for 43 yards receiving in the Silverbacks 13-27 loss to the Austin Copperheads, dropping New York to 0-4 for the season.
Other notable offensive players include Copperheads running back Zoe Watts, who rushed for 108 yards on 31 carries. Both of Austin’s rushing scores came from running back Kichwa Jones, who rushed 15 time for 49 yards and two scores, coming from 3 and 7 yards, respectively. Arizona Outlaws wide receiver Saba Donut had 154 receiving yards in the Outlaws loss to the Orange County Otters. Finally, Honolulu Hahalua running back Keʻokeʻo Kāne-Maikaʻi had 132 scrimmage yards, 35 rushing and 97 receiving.
If you watched the games you should already know who the defensive player of the week is going to be. Setting an ISFL game record with 169 interception return yards was Otters safety Prince Vegeta in their victory over the Outlaws. Vegeta had 3 interceptions, 2 of which he returned for touchdowns (73 yards and 68 yards.) The third was returned for 28 yards, only one shy of a score. This is all in addition to 8 tackles and 3 pass deflections. Vegeta’s performance this week will be a legitimate contender for the defensive game of the season award.
Honorable mention defensive efforts this week include Honolulu linebacker Heinrich Kackpoo with 13 tackles, 2 tackles for loss, 2 sacks, 2 pass deflections, and a 47 yard pick six. Any other week, and Kackpoo would have won player of the week. Arizona cornerback Desmond Scarlett had 5 tackles, 4 pass deflections, and 1 interception. San Jose Sabercats linebacker Tyron Brackenridge had 7 tackles, 1 sack, and 3 pass deflections. Cornerback Lesean Crooks had a 51 yard pick six for the Copperheads in addition to 3 tackles. Austin linebacker Mack Arianlacher had 6 tackles, 2 sacks, 2 pass deflections and an interception. New Orleans Second Line cornerback also had a 40 yard pick six and 3 tackles to go along with 4 pass deflections. Also for the Second Line, safety Mason Blaylock had 6 tackles, 4 pass deflections, and a pick.
Finally, special teams player of the week goes to Hahalua safety Shawn Dawkins who kicked off (dad joke!) the Honolulu/San Jose game with a 106 yd kickoff return for a touchdown.
Who was the NFSC offensive player of the week? Philadelphia quarterback Brock Phoenix had an almost perfect game for the Liberty, passing for 344 yards and 4 touchdowns, with a passer rating of 133.1. Alas, Brock’s efforts were in vain and the Berlin Fire Salamanders defeated the Liberty 33-31.
Berlin quarterback Nick Kaepercolin had 329 passing yards for 3 touchdowns and 1 interception for a 112 rating. The Fire Salamanders QB also had 1 rush for 2 yards and a touchdown. Baltimore Hawks wide receiver Doug Howlett continues his impressive rookie campaign, adding 106 yards receiving and a score this week. Howlett leads the ISFL by more than 100 yards with 469 yards receiving this season. Colorado Yeti running back Darrel Williams rushed 22 times this week for 91 yards and a score. The Fire Salamanders had a pair of red hot receivers, Susan Cash Jr. had 104 yards and a touchdown, and Dre Matthews had 100 yards and a score as well. Finally, Philadelphia wide receivers Randy Vuxta and Flash Panda had 101 yards with two scores and 120 yards receiving respectively.
This week's NFSC outstanding defensive player of the week award goes to Chicago Butchers linebacker Juan Domine. Domine continues to be one of the top contributors in the Butchers defense, adding 8 tackles, 1 tackle for loss, 1 sack, and 1 pass deflection in this week's loss to the Sarasota Sailfish.Other notable defenders this week were Yellowknife Wraiths safety Magnus Valdyr with 12 tackles, 1 forced fumble, and a pass deflection. Wraiths defensive end James Cho had 7 tackles and 3 tackles for loss. Sarasota defensive tackle Big Edd had 2 sacks to go along with 3 tackles. Fire Salamanders lineback Hingle McCringleberry had a forced fumble and recovery to go along with his 5 tackles. Finally, Philadelphia safety Richard D’ Attoria V had 6 tackles, 3 pass deflections and a pick.
Finally, the most outstanding special teams performance for this week goes to Wraiths running back Mathias Hanyadi, who for the second week in a row had a kickoff return fall short of a touchdown by a yard, this one was returned for 89 yards.
