I used the system used by Team Rankings to determine these rankings. They're based off of a single game's worth of stats. In real life, these are based on the stats that have the biggest impact on future winning percentages in the NFL, so they don't apply DIRECTLY to the sim. Some stats that are considered are: scoring by quarter, third down efficiency, points scored, rushing first downs, rushing play percentages, rushing attempts per game, average passer rating, yards per pass attempt, incompletions per game, yards per completion, passing play percentage, completion percentage, qb sacks allowed per game, points allowed per game, scoring allowed by quarter, average passer rating allowed, passing play percentage against, quarterback sacks per game, incompletions against per game, yards per pass attempt allowed, turnover margin per game, take aways per game, and strength of opponents.
The rankings are as follows:
1. 85.7 Wraiths
2. 80.1 SaberCats
3. 57.2 Outlaws
4. 56.6 Legion
5. 53.2 Otters
6. 51.7 Yeti
7. 41.8 Liberty
8. 35.8 Hawks
So, first we'll go with my opinion. Do I agree with these rankings? Of course not! But we have to remember these are based upon a single week of play. The teams that won are on top, but the strength of teams probably isn't properly identified.
Some stats used have a bigger impact than others on these numbers. The biggest are: points scored, points allowed, turnover margin, third down efficiency, average passer rating, and pass play percentages (higher percentages are WORSE for the offense and BETTER for the defense).
The Wraiths being on top is a fair ranking and I don't disagree that they're one of the top teams in the league. San Jose is receiving a lot of credit for having great statistics while putting a beating on the Liberty, who many would argue are one of the worst teams in the league. I think it would be fair to argue the SaberCats are overrated simply based upon the quality of their competition.
The Outlaws are ranked third, but there is a pretty big gap between them and the top two teams. The biggest explanation is statistically, they lost to the Otters. The Outlaws were able to pull out a win by winning the turnover battle and making some key, big plays. So while they won, they're ranked quite low compared to the two top dogs. I would say that this could spell trouble for the Outlaws as season two rolls around, but somehow they managed to continue to make big plays, win the turnover margin, and win games throughout season 1. It isn't always pretty but it seems to work for them.
The Legion are the lowest ranked winning team, because statistically they were bad and they beat a team that was bad (statistically!). I don't think their ranking is that far off from where they could end up at the end of the season though.
The Otters being at 5th makes sense based on the points I made in the Outlaws section. Statistically, the Otters should have won that game. They made key mistakes that cost them the win despite running and passing the ball well. They gained yards but couldn't convert them to points. I don't think they have anything to panic over yet. They looked good.
The Yeti are definitely a bit underrated here. They played the top team in the league and had a pretty flukey game offensively. They pounded the rock and hardly threw it. I expect they'll move up to at least the top half of the league without much trouble. Nothing to panic over in Colorado.
The other team that is out of place in these rankings, in my opinion, are the Hawks. The Hawks did not play well, but they were on the road and took the Legion to overtime. The calculation used are for the NFL and the home field advantage there isn't nearly as prevalent as it currently is in our sim. I think the Hawks might surprise some people in season two, but they're going to have a hard path through the Yeti and Wraiths who also both look improved this season.
