If there is one constant of the ISFL, it is that the sim sucks and is stupidly random. That constant leads to another constant, in that the team that is favored does not always win, and players who should be good are sometimes actively terrible, and players who shouldn't be producing will do so. So, who has that been so far this season?
Underperformer: Chika Fujiwara
This was probably obvious. Despite being one of the worst teams in the league, the Hawks bottom-of-the-conference roster does have high end talent in a couple of places. The queen of their talent is the highest TPE QB in the entire league, Chika Fujiwara. This high end talent has been the worst QB in the league in terms of passer rating on the year, boasting tied for the worst completion percentage with Sam Howitzer, and the 3rd most interceptions in the league behind O'Donnell and Cue. Suffice to say, if you were one of those who saw Chika's high TPE total and thought to draft her to your fantasy lineup, then you suffered immensely until you booted her out on the waiver wire.
Overperformer: Etrigan T. Slayer
Slayer's barely in the top 25 of TPE for the Defensive End position, but has a shot at being considered the DEOTY. 5 sacks isn't anything to sneeze at for the position, and while that's not the most, his 49 tackles are tied for the most, and his 18 tackles for loss are 5 full clear of second place. Not bad for a season 25 rookie. Also, just for fun, he's one of only 4 DEs with a safety, and one of only 3 with a forced fumble! Also in the running was Felix Archstone, who did not get this spot due to greater TPE and due to a season that, while great, is not up for a player of the year award.
Underperformer: Claude Miller II
Berlin is one of a few teams that can say they've been both sim screwed and sim blessed at times this season. This led to a few different candidates for each position. I quickly eliminated von Pebbles on the basis that they're still an above average player at their position despite that being an underperformance for the 4th most TPE. I eventually decided on Miller over the other candidate for this spot, Boyd. Boyd has been a slightly below average receiving TE while having the 5th most TPE at the position, but having a top 5 or so best blocking season among TEs got him out of the spot. And Miller's performed MUCH worse. Having only 2 tackles for loss and 3 sacks after 12 weeks, Miller is only the 12th best DT by TPE, but circumstances make this worse. He's being outperformed by the run stuffer DT right next to him with 100 less TPE on the line, he's being outperformed by players with less than 500 TPE, when you have 2 less sacks than someone who hasn't updated for half a year and less than 350 TPE then you DEFINITELY get on this list when you have the 5th most TPE on your team.
Overperformer: Hingle McCringleberry
McCringleberry stands out much harder among the pack than his fellow overperformers on the Salamanders, mainly due to just how low he is on the TPE chart and how well he's performing despite that. Hingle has the 29th most TPE in the league among Linebackers, with 533. He hasn't updated since October although he did come on the site in December. His 18 pass breakups, 2 INTs, 2 fumbles with recoveries, and a more modest 4 sacks and 72 tackles make him an outside shot for a pro bowl spot among coverage linebackers. Specifically, he has the 2nd most PBUs among linebackers and tied for the most picks. Considering that there are more linebackers with more TPE than him in the ISFL than there are linebackers with less TPE, that's quite impressive.
Underperformer: George O'Donnell
Not really a contest here, the top 5 players on the Butchers include O'Donnell, two Cornerbacks who have been good to great, a guy who is at worst the 2nd best WR in the league, and the 6th best RB by TPE who's no worse than 10th this year in terms of play. That leaves O'Donnell, who instead of running away with the title of worst underperformer on a team with championship ambitions, more passes it away as his 14 INTs lead the league by at least one more extremely bad Cue game, and his passer rating is only 0.1 better than the bottom of the barrel mark of Chika Fujiwara.
Overperformer: Icebox Riposte
The Butchers were one of the hardest teams to do for this section of the writeup. Most of their top performers are their top end TPE talent, and I'm not sure Riposte is outperforming his spot by all that much. However, I think he's the best fit on the Butchers. With the 14th most TPE among Olinemen, he's one of the league leaders in pancakes among non-bots and has also given up zero sacks on the season.
Underperformer: Darrel Williams
Darrel Williams has the 5th most TPE in the league. He's only 5 behind the leader for running backs, and when you look at running backs alone it gets even more stark as only 5 running backs are even within 300 of his TPE. There's just one small problem, that probably doesn't stand out if you just look at fantasy points. Williams has 11 total touchdowns and a ton of yards. However, he is one of the worst running backs in terms of yards per carry in the entire league, with only 3 running backs in the entire league having less than his 3.7 yards per carry, even including all the backs with only 5 carries per game! More than half of the QBs have more yards per carry. Even his own backup, with 322 less TPE, has 3.9 yards per carry.
Overperformer: Dick Thruster
Melvin Murder Moose leads the league in sacks and has 15 PBUs as well. With the 17th most TPE among linebackers, Melvin is a surefire bet for this spot assuming there's not another person lower down on the list who's also performing magnificently.
*scrolls down*
...and there's an Olineman who's name I recognize from looking at stats earlier. Dick Thruster has the 17th most TPE among Olinemen, with just barely over 500 TPE. And he's 2 off the lead in pancakes while giving up zero sacks, a clear threat for the title of OLOTY. Easy choice.
Underperformer: Flash Panda
Panda has the 6th most TPE among Wide Receivers. He has the 21st most yards. He only has 5 touchdowns, too, so that's not helping. When you're being outperformed by your own 2nd WR, and he also has only 557 TPE to your 953, that says a ton. Even Honky-Tonk Haywood's goose egg of stats as a below average player doesn't do enough to save you.
Overperformer: Killian Chambers
On the other hand, at least he's my choice for overperformer. At 19th in yards, with 7 touchdowns to his name (only 7 players have more), Chambers is only 31st in WR TPE, and his performance is comparable to Videl-San and Tychondrius Hood who have over 900 TPE. Chambers is one of a few major candidates for breakout wide receiver of the year, and while he's probably the least high profile of the 3 I'm thinking of, he's had a great season so far.
Underperformer: Fawn Dillmiballs
Raphtalia Chan avoids this ignoble designation by a hair; while Chan's having a top 10 RB season or at least close to one, that's not really enough for a player with the most TPE of any offensive player in the league. However, Fawn Dillmiballs has the 7th most TPE of any DT, and has only 5 sacks on the year. There are a double digit number of DEs with as many or more sacks on the year, and Dillmiballs hasn't caused any turnovers to help make up for that either.
Overperformer: Mike Boss Jr
This would have been easier if he had kept up his form from earlier in the year, but he's still the QB with the second least TPE in the league, and is the 8th best QB by passer rating, and the most prolific by yards. Also, to be frank, it's not like there's much competition here on the Sailfish.
Underperformer: Kai Sakura
Note that this is pretty much by default, Sakura's not massively underperforming or anything, there's a reason they have the best record in the league and that's mainly due to nobody underperforming. But Sakura is the 7th highest TPE WR in the league, and has only the 13th most yards in the league, as well as a pretty average number of touchdowns with 6. Sakura's not really doing much wrong, it's just that everyone else, from the defense to the QB to the running back are all performing up to their TPE.
Overperformer: Nero Alexander
A season 15 player still in the league is practically an overperformer by definition, but Alexander's doing more than just playing. With 6 tackles for loss and 7 sacks, Alexander's one of the more well rounded Ends in terms of production. This isn't exactly comparable to, say, Slayer, but with 507 TPE, Alexander's still a reasonable pick here. Just as there's not many people on the Wraiths that fit for underperformers, there's not many overperformers either.
Underperformer: Desmond Scarlett
Scarlett is the highest TPE player in the entire league, and to be frank, 13 pass deflections and only 1 pick are nowhere NEAR enough production to justify over 1300 TPE. This was pretty easy to pick considering the first player on the Outlaws that I'd consider to be playing worse, Wesley Eriksen, has over 400 TPE less than Scarlett.
Overperformer: J.J. "Jay" Jay-Jaymison
When the player with the least TPE on your entire team is in the driver's seat for a player of the year award, then it's pretty easy to pick them for the biggest overperformer. Jaymison has the 4th best average in terms of punting, but more importantly, he has not missed a kick yet all year. This despite having the 4th least TPE among kickers at less than 400 TPE. While a lot of players have a shot at this, including multiple RBs and WRs on the team, I'm going with the K.
Underperformer: Lesean Paris Crooks
From one bad Cornerback duo to another. What's worse, the 8th most TPE CB with 1 INT or the 14th best TPE CB with 0 INTs and less than 10 PDs? I'm going with the latter one due to it only being a 150 TPE difference as opposed to a 300 TPE difference.
Overperformer: Zoe Watts
Watts has a pretty decent shot at getting RBotY in only her second year, and has only the 12th most TPE of any RB. Over 1500 yards and 9 TDs, if Watts continues her great start to her career she's an easy HOF candidate.
Underperformer: Nicolas Ayers
Honolulu doesn't have a lot of good choices for this, all their top players are either performing well (Powers, Podolak) or are low for their position (Luke Skywalker). Even Ayers isn't exactly performing poorly, he has tied for the 3rd most touchdowns in the league, and he has only the 15th most TPE in the league among RBs. However, he has only 3.7 YPC which is tied for one of the lowest in the league. Ayers is just the best possible choice for this more than anything else.
Overperformer: Guy Fields
Fields has the 26th most TPE in the league among LBs, and among the LBs with as many tackles as he does (98) he has the best stats with 2 sacks, 2 TFLs, 3 INTs, a fumble recovery, and a defensive touchdown. All this from a guy with just barely over 550 TPE. While the Hahalua are not exactly doing well, Fields is one of the last people you could possibly put blame on.
Underperformer: Marcella Toriki
Alright, on one hand Toriki has the most rushing touchdowns in the league and tied for the lead in total touchdowns. On the other hand, Toriki boasts the second worst yards per carry of any running back in the entire league, with only Danny King being worse than her 3.6 YPC. And while she is in regression, she's still the running back with the 5th highest TPE total.
Overperformer: Mike Rotchburns
Toriki has 1029 TPE. Rotchburns has 469 TPE. If Watts doesn't get the RBotY, then Rotchburns probably gets it, with 5.2 yards per carry over 154 attempts. Toriki may have the TDs, but Rotchburns outperforms her everywhere else.
Underperformer: Bubba Thumper
Thumper's probably the best choice for this. 917 TPE is as impressive as it gets for a season 17 player, he's still the 10th best DT in the league by TPE. He only has 5 sacks and less than 30 tackles. He doesn't even have any tackles for loss to help make up the slack.
Overperformer: Hank Winchester
Winchester's also not a particularly huge overperformer, but he still has under 600 TPE, the 21st most TPE in the league for LBs. And he's got 95 tackles, 2 tackles for loss, 3 sacks, an interception, and a forced fumble.
Underperformer: Rotticus Scott
Technically, as a run stuffer DT, Scott isn't supposed to get a ton of sacks. However, not a ton of sacks isn't enough to describe the performance of Scott, with only 1 Tackle for Loss and 2 Sacks. He has the 4th most TPE in the league among DTs. He blows everyone else out of the water on an OCO team that generally performs well.
Overperformer: Garfield Despacito
Despacito had decent competition in Bronko Mills, but Mills' low usage had me put Despacito and his league leading 11 receiving touchdowns over him. He has the 15th most TPE in the league among WRs, and the 3rd most fantasy points among WRs. Despacito has slowed down a bit over the past few weeks as opposed to the start he stormed out to, but he's still worthy of this spot.
Underperformer: Otis Allen
We've had a number of extreme underperformers coming from Defensive Tackles with a lot of TPE. Otis Allen tops the list in more ways than one. With only 1 sack and 2 tackles for loss on the season, only 31 tackles, and no turnovers created, Allen might have the worst stats of all the DTs on this list, and also happens to have the most TPE of any Defensive Tackle in the league.
Overperformer: Brendan Lanier
Lanier is one of the bright spots on this team, with 4 sacks, 2 forced fumbles and an interception. He's only the 20th best Safety in the league by TPE, and yet is performing much better.
Overall I'd say that the biggest overperformers are Slayer, Dick Thruster, and McCringleberry. As for the biggest underperformers, Otis Allen, Desmond Scarlett, Darrell Williams, and Chika Fujiwara are all up there.
