Ricardo Sandoval, on a visit to San Jose, where his fiancee lives, has become involved with San Jose charity, Sacred Heart, and it seems Sandoval is already making fans in the city. According to ABC7News, "Happening today in the South Bay, more than 3,000 students will pick out new backpacks and school supplies. This program at Sacred Heart Community Service has grown so much in the last decade. In 2005, they gave out 1,000 backpacks, today they'll be giving out 3,300. The need had been growing over the past few years but it seems to be plateauing. It appears many families are leaving Silicon Valley." Kids will have appointments where they'll come in and pick out their own backpack and get some school supplies, like pens, pencils, calculators, paper, erasers, meet Otters players such as Trey Willie, Mike Boss, and Ricardo Sandoval and then check out. This is coming in the midst of a recent increase in charity work for Sandoval.
According to NBC Sports, "Sandoval has donated $50,000 to Meals on Wheels America. Meals on Wheels has been characterized in media reports (which may not be accurate) as a potential target of the spending cuts made in President Donald Trump’s proposed budget. Regardless of whether the budget will adversely affect Meals on Wheels, the perception that it will has taken root — and Sandoval's decision to support the program with a five-figure donation can be regarded as a direct response to Trump’s comments regarding the report that he’ll direct a “nasty tweet” at whichever team signs Sandoval."
However, Sandoval's largest work has come in working with children abandoned after their parents were deported. Sandoval's self-funded charity, Abandoned Angels, has done seemingly impossible amounts of work with abandoned children in the short time it's been active. When asked what moved him the most, Sandoval responded, "Seeing a little boy who was left in the same situation as I once was. Left alone, at the border, and told to go make myself a life at 6 years old. It's devastating, man, what this government is doing to children and calling it 'national security.' Disgusting, man."
We will see what Sandoval can achieve as he moves up in the league.
