The chronicles of the McTurtle brothers in the DSFL
In the DSFL draft everyone knows that anything can happen especially in a draft that isn’t very deep. With only a few rounds of active players. Knowing this and so many Defensive players in this draft as well it was hard to figure out a good mock draft to see where players would end up. At the end of the day it would come down to who teams felt fit their locker rooms best as well as fit their teams needs on the gridiron. This draft was unique in that it was actually featuring a lot of D line as well. Now comes the second problem. The McTurtle brothers came into the draft hoping that they would be able to land on the same team, but with the draft being so small there was no guarantee that it would happen but there was obviously a chance. Now it was onto draft day where we know that anything can happen.
Draft day for the Mcturtle Brothers Leonardo and Raphael was a lot like any other day; it mostly consisted of sitting around playing video games and crushing some large slices of pizza. Knowing that they would likely be drafted they decided they should do something a little extra special for the draft. They both decided to treat themselves to a proper shell shine and scrub to be their best looking green self for if/when their names would be called. The brothers then got ready for the draft arriving early in order to secure their spot as close to the kitchen as possible. The real plan was to eat as much pizza as humanly, or should I say turtly, possible before being called up to the stage. They decided to add some fun to their rivalry and actually placed a bet on the first round of drinks and a week's worth of pizza on who would be selected first between the two of them. Well it didn’t take very long to find out who won that bet once the draft officially started.
Going to take a step back for a second and say that the brothers had been scouted by each of the DSFL teams and it was very exciting to have talked to all the scouts! It was a great experience and first exposure to the league and was really awesome to have gotten to meet so many good people. It speaks to how great the community is that there are so many willing people to make the teams and Locker rooms that much more enjoyable that it would have been great to be taken by any of the teams really! The McTurtle’s were just hoping to make an impact and it appears they will.
With the 4th overall pick in the Draft Leonardo was taken by Tijuana. The Brothers went crazy and even cheered by holding up their slice of pizzas and taking a big bite before Leo headed to the stage to collect the new jersey! First off what an honor it was to be taken so high in the draft. Secondly knowing you were taking the Turtle you think they would have planned a better jersey to put on him for the draft. The jersey was a little snug on the shell. It was an awkward moment on the stage and looked pretty goofy standing up there trying to put it on. Looking at you @Kotasa. How did you mess that one up so badly? Well with some quick thinking they did figure out it was best just holding the jersey up with his classic #4, representing the 4th overall pick, in front of him to pose for the Camera smiling from ear to ear. What an opportunity to be thought that highly of and follow the ground that was broken by Pasta the Turtle the year before. Pasta was taken 7th overall in the DSFL draft. To this writer's knowledge Leonardo is now the highest drafted Turtle in DSFL history. It was no doubt an exciting time for Leo and his brothers. But the draft was not over yet. Now it was on to the excitement to see if Raphael would end up heading to the same team as him. Well the picks rolled on more top talent was taken in the first round and just like that we were into the second round. With the 12th overall pick and Tijuana’s second pick of the draft Raphael was also taken by the Luchadores! The brothers would be headed to Tijuana together! Raphael was just as excited as Leo to be selected so high in the draft with so much Defensive line talent available. He was a little more graceful when taking the stage and had a good and proper introduction to the ownership. Tijuana had secured the McTurtle brothers! With that said it truly is a fantastic and great opportunity for the brothers to be able to continue to play in their career together. It is obviously what they were hoping they would be able to do from the start but like in life you can’t always control everything especially on draft day.
Leo and Raphael are moving in:
The next day the brothers had to start their move. Firstly the brothers needed to figure out how to get to Tijuana. More importantly they needed to figure out where Tijuana was. After consulting with a map and getting the contact info from the GM’s for the Luchadores they decided it was probably best to fly rather than drive their garbage truck or van cross country to New Mexico. Something about it being 4,462KM suddenly didn’t make it all that feasible to drive there. So they settled on letting Kotasa and Bowl purchase them flights and send a moving truck to haul all of the belongings out. It was pretty funny to see two Turtles getting on a plane to fly cross country. But hey it isn’t everyday you see turtles taking over the DSFL either.
So once Leonardo and Raphael landed in Tijuana the first order of business was to find a place to live. If they were going to make this place their home for potentially the next 4 years they needed to find a crash pad. So they did what any sane newcomer to the city would do. They went to the city hall and got a map of the sewer system. They say there is no place like home. But when you have grown up in the sewers it seems like it is the only place you would end up living. Much to their disappointment there were not any abandoned subway stations or real places to set up shop. With their most precious belongings on the way they had to think up some place to stay. Well sure enough when you ask for help they will provide. Once again the Tijuana team came through clutch in the situation. The Coach had quickly dispatched Jason Waterfalls to make sure the Brothers found their way to a place to stay. He was supposed to just take them to the hotel but hell why not take them out to find a place to live before taking the new rookies out on the town right? Well first things first They needed a place to crash. Waterfalls knew just the place. He took them to a Texas ranch style house that had its very own pool. Of course how could the brothers pass this opportunity up? For the first time in their lives they had actual cash and no idea what to spend it on, why not buy that house and all the pizza you could possibly eat to go with it. They have always had the simple life living in the sewers with their brothers and master Splinter. But now they had grown up and were officially out on their own. It did not take more than a minute for them to pay the list price on the house and direct the moving trucks to go there and unpack when they arrived in a couple days. Once they had the housing situation figured out it was time to see what Tijuana was all about. They had the perfect host to do just that with Jason leading the charge.
Once Leonardo and Raphael had cleaned up at the hotel and properly moisturized their skin it was Jason’s time to show the brothers everything they needed to know about Tijuana or so they thought. The first step and most importantly he took them out for dinner where they met up with the rest of the veteran teammates that had already arrived for training camp as well. Miracle Whip, Dumais Wells, Erick Bolanos, Live Laughlove, and Herc Kirby, were all waiting there along with their fellow rookies from the S32 DSFL draft class: Talen Farrens, Mason Jones, Tommy Jordan, D’Nickashaw Mangoldson and the Brothers. All these rookies had no idea what kind of night they were in for. This wasn’t just any team supper to get to meet and greet the team, it was their rookie party….
The rookie party started off pretty casual with the classic Tijuana supper of enchiladas and for the turtles, pizza (of course). For those that don’t know, Tijuana is located right on the border of the USA, so they have all the classic American meals to go with the more traditional Mexican ones. This supper wasn’t just about the meal though, it was about the true experience of Tijuana and what would Mexico be without the experience of Tequila. And booooy did they experience that Tequila. The Veterans first step of this rookie supper was of course to get the rookies drinking. Shot after shot they put the tequila down. The night got a lot more fun and groggy after that though. (disclaimer: Details of what was to come next are told from Leonardo’s memory so may not be totally reliable). Once the rookies were good and buzzed the veteran players took them out on the town. The first stop of the night was to go to a Luchadores wrestling match! Into a packed stadium of fans of their favorite wrestlers the group went. What a sight it was to see everyone dressed up in their masks and costumes holding signs and chatting names. Though when the Luchadores team walked in it the sight to see was looking at the McTurtle brothers. They looked like they were the new stars of the show! They already had the masks on and everyone thought they were just wearing some crazy good costumes. They attracted so much attention that security actually approached them to show them backstage in order to get prepped for the match. This was how things started getting out of control pretty quickly. Leonardo was clearly not thinking straight (the 10 shots of tequila he did were kicking in) and he was a little more than tipsy at this point. So he actually started to believe he was part of the performance! He went down with the security to the backstage area where he met the likes of Rey Mysterio and Mistico, and El Hijo del Santo. Of course they realized pretty quickly that Leonardo did not speak any Spanish and was clearly lost. But when they realized it was not a costume he had on they were shocked. It was then that one of the wrestlers realized he was Leonardo McTurtle, the new DE for the Luchadores football team! With this realization he became an instant celebrity amongst the group of wrestlers. They started asking him for his autographs and exchanged pictures with him including all of them posing together. But that wasn’t the end of it! They took him out into the ring to introduce him to the crowd! Leo was in awe when he stepped into the ring. The cheers coming from hundreds of masked fans! Mysterio even attempted to pull some of his famous moves on Leo to get the crowd really going! Much to his surprise though Leo was just sober enough to let his martial arts kick in and defend himself from the takedown! The crowd cheered even louder! If this wasn’t a moment Leo would ever forget WELCOME TO TIJUANA! It was then that Leonardo realized he may be a little drunker than he had originally thought. The wrestling had helped push the tequila to every part of his body and he was now full on drunk. Luckily the security guards were kind enough to get him back with the rest of his team who were being asked to leave after taking too much of the spotlight away from the main attraction of the wrestling match. They left willingly to the roar of the crowd signing autographs on the way out.
Just when you thought the night was over and you were going to pack it in you realize there is a whole other side of the city after hours. It is a tale as old as time that when you have a group of athletes together drinking that someone will suggest something completely ridiculous and everyone will follow along. So with that in mind I take to the next part of the evening festivities what some in the business would call a “donkey show”. Now I won't go into details about what happens at these shows because we are going to try and keep this a family article but you can imagine the looks on each of the rookies faces when they realized what was actually happening here. To some of them these shows were a Myth to the others they didn’t think they were real. But Alas they are. This is where the night started to separate the men from the boys though. Some handled the show better than others. Most at this point were pushed over the edge and now full on sick. The tequila shots had finally caught up to them and they needed to call it a night. However all the big boys from the rookies class were far from being done. So the group split up for the night and the designated sober veterans made sure their rookies made it back home in one piece while the others continued their journey of the Tijuana nightlife. It was only Mangoldson and the McTurtles left of the rookies. The fact they were all still somewhat functioning was a surprise in itself that even the veteran players seemed to take notice. So veterans decided there was no more hazing or silly tasks they needed to do. Instead they took them out to one of the city's best night clubs where they could dance and enjoy the remainder of the evening. It was at some point then that Raphael decided it was a good idea to get the DJ to play the classic Vanilla Ice song Ice Ice Baby, apparently they had never heard of the ninja rap version of the song. Raphael quickly added a note to bring it with him next time they came to the club. So when the Vanilla ice classic came on Raphael and Leonardo cleared the dance floor to make room to teach their teammates the infamous ninja turtle dance! Getting the entire team and club to join in! It was not long after this song finished that the bar was finally closing and alas the night had finally come to an end. Leo and Ralph managed to make it back to the hotel by 5am after stopping for some late night, or some might say early morning, pizza before finding their beds and sleeping off one of the most memorable nights of their lives. The McTurtle brothers had officially arrived in Tijuana.
Well after sleeping almost an entire day and night in order to sober up from their exceptional first night in Tijuana, it was time to get down to business the next few days. They got into the routine of training camp and balanced off the remaining time with getting to know the team better. Before long it was time to settle into their new house and decided to host a team party to celebrate. When the moving truck delivered all their prized home possessions to their newly acquired home the McTurtle brothers couldn’t help but be excited to finally have their own place and more importantly their own rooms. The movers had everything unpacked in about 30 minutes when they realized that 2 beds, 2 bean bag chairs, and a large tv with the newest gaming systems isn’t actually all that much to unpack into their new 2000sq ft. house. So Leonardo decided it was best to go out and find some furniture to furnish this house so it could properly be the party place. Leo was not up for the task though. His idea of furnishing the house was stopping by Walmart and picking up a couple folding chairs and a table. But hey when you spend your days eating pizza and floating in the pool what else do you really need? It wasn’t until they invited the team over to hangout after practice one day that they realized they needed some actual furniture. Lucky for them, someone on the team “knew a guy” that was able to hook them up with a killer deal to furnish the house for them. It made the turtle pad the official team party house. It was a lot of fun and games for a little bit leading up to the preseason for the Luchadores, but it was now time to focus up!
Training camp was in full swing and there is a competition to be played out over the seasons to come. For those that don’t know Leonardo and Raphael have a little side competition going on. Though the ultimate goal is to win the championship. The brothers are looking to compete with one another to see who the best really is. We are going to hopefully find out once and for all who is the better brother by comparing all their stats through their season by season stats and their career ones. The categories are simple of course as they are all your standard defensive ones but we will see who really shines at the end of the day. Feel free to respond with your pick of who the better brother is and why?
Well this has been the life of Leonardo’s experience in the DSFL so far. He is always here and open to any and all questions you may have for him! Just hit that reply and leave it will do my best to answer any and all you might have!
