Defensive Line Standouts - Week 14
Welcome to week 14 of our weekly look at defensive line performances across the league. Another shortened list this week, and our last for the regular season as next week there are only two games. Once the playoffs are underway, be on the lookout for our end of the season review. Enough chit chat… Let’s begin!
Defensive End Top Performers
J. Tuck ($ x10) 8 TCK, 2 TFL, 5 SCK, 1 forced fumble, 1 fumble recovered
For his tenth appearance on our list, Tuck put on a performance of a lifetime. Tuck’s 8 tackles, 2 tackles for loss, 5(!) sacks, 1 forced fumble, and 1 fumble recovered is the best game of anyone who has appeared on the list this year, and arguably one of the best in the entire NSFL.
D. Davidson ($$) 4 TCK, 1 TFL, 1 SCK
Davidson has had a quietly solid season as his 4 tackles, 1 tackle for loss, and 1 sack performance this past week was one of his best. With 35 tackles, 9 tackles for loss, and 5 sacks on the year, he gives the Liberty a solid piece on the line to build around for next year. The Liberty host the SaberCats at home for the final game of the season.
A. Tomlinson ($ x7) 3 TCK, 1 TFL, 1 SCK
Making his seventh appearance on our list (and most of any Otter) has the fifth most of any defensive end. His 3 tackles, 1 tackle for loss, and 1 sack are an outing any defensive end would be happy with but, has become common place for Tomlinson. The Otters’ regular season is over and will face off against the Arizona Outlaws in the ASFC Championship.
O. Von Gerhardt ($ x5) 4 TCK, 1 TFL
The other half of the Liberty rookie defensive end duo, Von Gerhardt earns his fifth spot on our list with his 4 tackles and 1 tackle for loss performance. Von Gerhardt has had a slightly better season than his fellow rookie, finishing the year with 39 tackles, 10 tackles for loss, and 7 sacks. The Liberty appear to have a solid core on the line for years to come.
Defensive Tackle Top Performers
A. Asipi ($ x8) 2 TCK, 1 TFL, 1 SCK, 1 fumble recovered
Once again, Asipi showed he can contribute to his team in more ways than just tackles and sacks. He finished last week with 2 tackles, 1 tackle for loss, 1 sack, and 1 forced fumble. Asipi finished with 8th appearance of the season, putting him in third place overall, behind only the Las Vegas Legion duo of Ramrio and Cox.
J. Boom ($ x7) 3 TCK, 1 SCK
Boom finished what is likely his final regular season game with the Hawks (with him being a season 3 rookie) with 3 tackles and 1 sack. His seventh appearance places him squarely in fourth place for number of appearances on our list, which is even more impressive considering he wasn’t even on the Hawks roster for the first 3 games. The Hawks next game will be against conference rival, the Yellowknife Wraiths for the NSFC championship game.
B. Metas ($ x6) 3 TCK, 1 SCK
The other half of the Baltimore interior line, Metas finished this past week with 3 tackles and 1 sack. Although it was a tough loss for the Hawks Metas and Boom were one of the few bright spots during the game. Metas finished the year with 33 tackles, 4 tackles for loss, and 9 sacks. While a bit of a down year compared to last year, his performance this season was something to be proud of, and a huge benefit to his team.
G. Taylor ($ x6) 3 TCK, 1 SCK
The only defensive tackle from Philadelphia to make our list this year, Taylor is making his sixth appearance here. His 3 tackles and 1 sack are an identical stat line to the 2 players listed above him. Taylor finished the year with 54 tackles, 1 tackle for loss, and 3 sacks. While his number may not be flashy, his 54 tackles show how valuable it can be to have a great run stopper in the middle of the line.
Team Appearances After Week 14
Las Vegas: 30*
Arizona: 26*
Baltimore: 26
Colorado: 20
San Jose: 18*
Orange County: 17
Yellowknife: 14
Philadelphia: 13*
While there was no movement in the actual rankings, the Hawks were able to tie the Outlaws for second place. However, the Outlaws have already had their bye, while the Hawks have not. Interesting note, the Yellowknife Wraiths are the only team with a player that accounts for over half their appearances. Bjornsson has 8 of the 14 appearances, and although Spearhead has appeared a respectable 4 times, it’s obvious they will need to get Bjornsson some more help for next year. Philadelphia had a solid bounce back week on the line with 3 players making an appearance after none last week. Unfortunately, both Colorado and Yelllowknife did not have a player qualify for our list this week.
