The DSFL season recap for the Bondi Beach Buccaneers:
Back in late summer when pre-season started and all teams where hopeful and anxiously awaiting the regular season the Bondi Beach Buccaneers had one goal like everybody else off course. We want to go to the playoffs. 9 rookies on offense and 5 rookies on defense seemed to be a pretty good mix for season 36. Especially with double-thread QB Grayson Yates from Montana State the sky seemed to be the limit for the offense. Speedster WR Dip Dhillon who came over from the Tijuana Luchadores was also a weapon to watch out for. On defense the eyes were on LB Jordan Hartline from BYU and CB Jason Oexius from Wisconsin. The Bucs lost all 4 pre-season games but the pieces installed started working better and better. The first regular season game at the Norfolk Seawolves was a loss with the score of 38-20 but especially on defense LB Jordan Hartline earned a defense POG award with 11 tackles, 1 forced fumble and a fumble recovery. Rookie QB Grayson Yates started the regular season with a passing and a rushing TD. Week 2 at home against Dallas Birddogs saw the Bucs win their first game - final score 37-13 and in this game the offense completely ran over the Dallas defense with 335 rushing yards. Total yards in this game was 531 vs. 172 from the Dallas team. Star of the game with RB Bean Delpine jr. with 211 yards rushing. Game 3 against one of the pre-season favorites saw the Bucs play the Portland Pythons and the game was won by Portland 25-10. 173 yards rushing was a good thing but 10 penalties did not help at all. Games 4 + 5 against London (24-20) and @ Kansas City (48-17) were both wins and the high point of these games was #5 against Kansas City where QB Grayson Yates passed for 2 TDs and ran also for 2 TDs by rushing the ball 11 times for 219 yards. In week 6 the Bucs played the Tijuana Luchadores and this became a defensive battle with the Luchadores coming out on top 17-13. The defensive POG was Bondi Beach LB Bernola Fireline with 10 tackles and 1 sack. At half time in the season in week 7 the Bucs had to play the Minnesota Grey Ducks and after the tough road loss in week 6 the Bucs lost again 24-14 and the record was 3-4 after seven games. Week 8 saw the Norfolk Seawolves come to town and the Bucs got a nice win 37-10 getting revenge for the week 1 loss at Norfolk. The defense dominated the Seawolves allowing only 270 total yards. On offense RB Bean Delhine jr won the POG award with 108 rushing yards and one TD. The next 3 weeks #9 at the Dallas Birddogs (6-36), week #10 against the Portland Phytons (24-34) and week #11 at the London Royals (10-44) saw the playoffs in jeopardy with the record being 4-7 going into the last 3 weeks of regular season play. In week #12 the Kansas City Coyotes came to town and the defense took care of business by sacking the Kansas City QB Queen Elizabeth II 6 times and intercepting him also 4 times. The Bucs lead the game at the start of the last quarter 34-10 and almost collapsed but had the Coyotes run out of time after they scored 3 TDs within 1:16 seconds and the final score was 34-31 and the record improved to 5-7. Week 13 brought the Tijuana Luchadores in to town and the Bucs were pretty much faced with elimination from the playoff race. The game was a gem and was played with gret emphasis on defense again. The defense forced 3 turnovers, 2 interceptions and one fumble where one INT became a pick-6 from rookie SS Ryan Murray. Offensive the Bucs had a very clean game with no turnovers and only 3 penalties. QB Grayson Yates had 284 yards passing with 3 TDs and a QB rating of 132 in that game. The record now 6-7 with one game left in regular season and the Bucs had it in their own hands to go to the playoffs. A win in the regular season finale and the playoffs were here. The week 14 game was a road game at the Minnesota Grey Ducks and the cold north did not treat the Bucs well. They fell to the Grey Ducks besides the usual dominant running game 21-7. In the loss RB Bean Delphine jr ran for 164 yards and earned his 5th offensive POG award of the season. Besides the loss and a 6-8 record the Bucs still qualified for the playoffs because Norfolk lost against the Portland Phytons. This set the playoffs for the Bucs and brought the 3rd game this season against the Tijuana Luchadores. The game was as close as the game two weeks ago against the Luchadores and the score was 17-17 after 3 quarters. A FG and a TD for Tijuana was to much to overcome in the last quarter where the Bucs only managed a TD and lost the game 27-24.
The season goal was to reach the playoffs which was achieved but being so close to get to the Ultimini championsip game really hurt.
Looking back at the season there are good things to find and this will give hopes for the future. Her is a short rundown how some of the rookies fared during their first season:
QB Grayson Yates passed for 2323 yards, 16 TDs and 6 interceptions, he also ran for 674 yards and had 8 rushing TDs
WR Dip Dhillon not really a rookie but in his first full season after coming over from Tijuana ended up with 977 receiving yards and 7 TDs, he led the Bucs in receiving
LB Jordan Hartline ended up as the 3rd leading tackler for the Bucs with 90, 2 interceptions, 1 sack and 4 forced fumbles.
CB Jason Oexius was the 4th leading tackler with 71 and he had 3 interceptions.
I want some goodness in this world. You're writing 500 more words about your dog and why they're great. I've spoken with Bayley and this is also going to include other pets (even, as she says, "stupid cats") and pictures are encouraged. Tell me why your pet is amazing and some homecooked goodness will net you a 2x media designation. BUT THATS NOT ALL. If you choose not to write about a pet or don't have one, I want you to do this: write the 500 extra words on why you love the ISFL and its community. Shoutout the good people in this league, spread some joy and good will. Be a beacon of light in your media, and get the 2x as well.
