RB- This is Ron Burgundy here with Pythons Cornerback Matt Jones. Although I haven't yet visited your teams practice, it seems like you're having a great time from all I've heard and seen. Was it your intention to make an early impression and really kind of impress them?
MJ- Oh sure, come on out here and play and get better. Being able to go out here and make a few plays while making sure I'm learning new stuff is always a nice thing. Simply put, you should come out here everyday and make some plays, ensure that you're improving, and do what you can to support the squad or provide competition for the other players.
RB- What's it like having Donovan Winters there on your team? It must be an honor coming into this locker room to have his kind of leadership there?
MJ- Man, just the leadership he offers and the knowledge alone are huge for us. Just in these few weeks that we've been together, I've picked up a lot from him. Just having a conversation with him while he has played longer than me and the experience he brings. Additionally, I believe that we are all learning something from him. Winters is a true leader in the locker room
RB- You faced Plant based in one-on-one battles a few times in practice. Simply attempting to prevent him from catching. How is your practice experience with him so far?
MJ- Oh, yes, he moves really quickly. Because of his quickness, he is difficult to defend. He responds quickly when he is on the line. As a result, rather than just attempting to be extremely aggressive on the line with him, you must be patient and shift your feet. He has therefore gained a lot of knowledge since arriving here and is improving greatly. He is another veteran I look up to in our locker room that has provided me with some good knowledge to use on the field.
RB- So you don't want to try to get your hands on him?
MJ- Oh no not in practice. we don't do contact and risk an injury. I once attempted to leapfrog him at the line but failed. I hit my private area and needed rest for a good 20 minutes. Never again.
RB- It's kind of insane to consider all the different things you guys can accomplish as a team given the secondary's versatility in general. You guys have a lot of various locations, after all. Pythons seemed to be a bit stacked.
MJ- Oh, without a doubt. The potential of our secondary and defense as a whole seems limitless. We have a strong, shrewd defense. There were many men who played a lot of football and could play in many different positions. Therefore, I believe that this year will be fantastic for our secondary.
RB- I know you aren't from Portland but your father's family comes from there. How does returning to your dad's home state feel for you?
MJ- It's a surreal feeling. I'm thrilled that I have the opportunity to remain in my parent's home state, where family members can easily travel to see me. My grandmother, grandfather, cousins. It's a great feeling. Makes holidays much easier.
RB- I know you played many different positions in your career. What position feels more comfortable for you to play as?
MJ- I feel like I can do everything, except I truly do appreciate playing corner. However, as previously stated, I believe I could play inside or safety if necessary due to my knowledge of the game and athletic ability. However, I can play anywhere on the field. But, comfort wise only, defiantly the cornerback position. There was a reason why I Was drafted to play Corner back.
RB- What did you learn from your former coach from Virginia Tech?
MJ- Just to keep working on your craft, never be satisfied, and to always find something to learn, whether mental or physical. Toward the finish of each training or the finish of each game, consistently track down something to gain from. I believe I brought that with me throughout my time in college.
RB- So as everyone knows by now you were selected third overall. Tell us a bit more about your experience and your thoughts?
MJ- I was just waiting on the draft pick call. I wouldn't say that I was surprised because I knew I was versatile, could learn a new position, and could play for any team. I really didn't go in expecting anything. At the same time I thought I would go late. You really don't know what to expect. I do believe I can fit in and perform well with this defense.
RB- How comfortable are you playing both inside and outside?
MJ- I can do both no problem. I feel like I could run with anyone because I trust my hips and feet. My speed guides me where the plays need to happen.
Thanks for being here Matt Jones. I am Ron Burgundy?
