Welcome to the first (and last) DSFL Team Cornament! I have exactly one goal here: to answer the question we’ve all asked for season upon season.
Which team is the best at cornhole?
How do you answer that question? A tournament, of course. Specifically, a single-elimination bracket divided by conference. Each team has equal skill at cornhole - no homerism here. This is purely down to who puts the bag on target more often.
Behold, our starting bracket:
Round One, Match One: The Minnesota Grey Ducks (Left Lane) vs. The London Royals (Right Lane)
In the first match of the tourney, Minnesota goes up 1-0 in round one, then promptly loses the lead and is forced to play from behind for the remainder of the match. London plays with just a bit more consistency and extends the lead to twelve points in round 13, going up 8-20 over the Grey Ducks. Round 14 would be the nail in the coffin, Royals progress to Round Two of the tournament. Final score: 8-22
Round One, Match Two: The Kansas City Coyotes (Left Lane) vs. The Portland Pythons (Right Lane)
These two teams proved they’re no amateurs when it comes to cornhole. Portland drew blood first, but were soon overcome by the Coyotes. The teams were an even match, with scoring happening back and forth for the duration.
The end to this match was a sensational one - Kansas leads 20-14 going into the 16th round, needing a single point to secure the win. The Coyotes put four bags on the board, and the Pythons could find wood only three throws out of four. Kansas wins in round 16, 21-14.
Round One, Match Three: The Norfolk Seawolves (Left Lane) vs. The Bondi Beach Buccaneers (Right Lane)
Moving to the south side of the bracket, we are treated to an entry into the heartbreak hall of fame. In round 12, it looks like things are all sewn up with Bondi Beach sporting a comfortable 4-20 lead. The Seawolves stopped the bleed in round 13 and pushed the game, again 4-20. Round 14 saw Norfolk put 6 points on the board and all of a sudden they’re within striking distance of a win again. In round 15, the Buccaneers continued to let their lead slip, giving up another 3 points, and it’s 13-20.
Momentum would take a sudden final turn in round 16, where Bondi Beach steals the final point needed for victory, and Norfolk’s underdog rally is over before it started. Final score: 13-21.
Round One, Match Four: The Tijuana Luchadores (Left Lane) vs. The Dallas Birddogs (Right Lane)
This match was a very strong showing for Tijuana, not so much for Dallas. The Birddogs struggled to find the board at all, and the Luchadores were happy to grind them down in fairly commanding fashion. When the smoke cleared at the end of round 14, Tijuana was the one to progress to the second round of the tournament. Final score: 22-8
Round One Roundup:
Round Two, Match One: The London Royals (Left Lane) vs. The Kansas City Coyotes (Right Lane)
London was subjected to additional testing for performance enhancing drugs after this round. Kansas City played respectably during the entire match, but the Royals simply outperformed their expecting scoring and steamrolled their opponent. The match ended after round 13, final score: 24-2.
Round Two, Match Two: The Bondi Beach Buccaneers (Left Lane) vs. The Tijuana Luchadores (Right Lane)
Buckle in for this one, gang. Holy smokes. By far the biggest battle of the tournament so far, both of these teams showed how badly they wanted the win. The match lasted all the way through round 22, in which Bondi Beach eliminated the Luchadores, final score: 21-10.
Round Two Roundup:
Finals: The London Royals (Left Lane) vs. The Bondi Beach Buccaneers (Right Lane)
For being such an astoundingly American sport, it pains me deeply that the championship game includes zero teams from the United States. In fact, there are only two teams in the DSFL that reside outside the lower 48, and they both outperformed us on our own soil. For shame, everyone else. Congratulations to the finalists though, let’s not waste any more time and reveal the results!
London continues the momentum from their previous match through the first eight round of the championship, going up 7-0 early over Bondi Beach.
The Buccaneers didn’t roll over without a fight though, and battled back to within 3 points of the lead in round 17. The momentum was lost in round 18, however, when the Royals extended the lead by 4.
After a few more rounds of battling, London claimed victory with a final score of 22-15.
Congratulations to the London Royals for being the first (and last) ever DSFL Cornament Champions!
