Hello all! When creating my player, I found it important to create a story behind my player even if it only gets mentioned a few times throughout his career. I wanted my player to be from Greece, as my great grandfather was a first generation American from Greece. I pulled up a random name generator, set the filter to Greek, and boom safety (I also chose the position with a random number generator) Alexandros Sotiris was born. I chose Athens, Greece as his birthplace, which I figured would be the place a good Greek football player would most likely be born.
I wanted to do some media before the draft and figured what better way to explore the names and nationalities (With a bigger focus on nationalities) of my fellow classmates. Just observing and writing about it would be boring, so to spice it up I'll be making this media a ranking. To keep this write up from being way too long, I'm going to condense things by pooling all the players of the same position together. QB, RB, WR ETC. The main things I will be taking into consideration when making these rankings will be: 1. Uniqueness- How rare is a player's country/place of origin compared to other players in the S48 draft class. 2. Diversity- How diverse is the position pool compared to other players. 3. Correlation- How well does a player's name corelate with the country they are from. For example, a player named Jacob Johnson from China would not score well on this scale. 4. Personal Preference- If I like one player's name/place of origin more than another's, I reserve the right to have this play a role in my rankings. 5. Size of position pool- If I feel two positions are close in rankings I will use the size of the player pool as a tiebreaker. The smaller player pool will most likely be rate lower in this scenario.
Without further ado let's get to the rankings!
11- DT. Sorry defensive tackles, it's not that I don't like your player names or player origins, you just don't stack up well in the format I set up. All 4 DTs are from the United States, with two of those players being from Washington. Two of these players have really long names, that while I don't mind them, they score really low in the correlation department.
My personal favorite- Juan Carasco- Houston, Texas.
10- K. There are only two kickers in this class, which puts them at a disadvantage from the start. Both of these kickers are from the United States so the only diversity they have is being from different states. One is from Boston which because of my background as a Boston sports fan definitely biases my decision. However, it is still not enough to earn them any better than second to last.
My personal favorite- Daniel Kerry- Boston.
9- QB. Just like the kickers, there are only two quarterbacks in the class of S48. The reason I give the quarterbacks the edge over the kickers is because they are more diverse, even if they are only two players. Greg Hirsch is from Canada, making them the first player on this list to be from outside the USA. Overall, the QBs had potential, but lacked the numbers to compete with other positions on this list. Jamarcus Qiller is listed as from Philly, which is unique because even though he isn't the only player from Philadelphia, he is the only player to have it listed as "Philly". I don't care if you agree but this makes him cooler.
My personal favorite- Jamarcus Qiller- Philly.
8- WR. Out of the 12 users who decided to create as a wide receiver, only two of them decided to create from outside of the United States. One of these places simply being "The Moon". The other being Nova Scotia, which at least isn't "Canada" like a few other players on this list, but it's still in Canada at the end of the day. Even the players from the USA who gave cities, gave pretty generic ones. Some examples being San Jose, California and Little Rock. I do enjoy player Warren Peace from "Maxville" but sadly that just isn't enough to get the receivers further down this list.
My personal favorite- Pranks Scofield- The Moon
7- CB. The cornerbacks are probably the most generic group of players on this list. Out of the 7 users who decided to create as corners, 6 of them chose for their players to originate from the United States. At least a couple of players are from unique towns (My favorite being CalebThe GEICOCamel from Chevy Chase, Maryland) The cornerbacks only saving grace, and the only reason they aren't dead last is because of Widdle Warwick, who originates from Endor. Upon a Google search I found out this is a moon from the Star Wars series. How did Widdle get over here to play in the ISFL? No clue... But it definitely sets the user up for a pretty sick background story.
My personal favorite- Widdle Warwick- Endor
6- TE. I really enjoy the creativity expressed by the 5 users who decided to create as tight ends, they just don't have the player pool the other positions do. Out of the 5 tight ends, 2 are from outside of the United States. These two countries are England and Germany, which are both countries that have a team in either the DSFL or the ISFL. This is great because I feel these countries deserve more players originating them to represent the league.
My personal favorite- Kurt Wagner- Wittenburg, Germany
5- DE. Starting off the top five are the defensive ends! I really like the 3 defensive ends in the class of S48, but sadly, they are held back by their lack of numbers. With three ends from three different countries, they have so much potential and score very high on the diversity side of things. Another thing other than their number of players is the fact that they lack uniqueness. All three of the countries represented by the defensive ends are also represented by other players of the class. (England, USA, Canada). I think if just one end had decided to be from another country or if they had a few more users, they could easily slide up on this list, but for now 5th is where they'll stand.
My personal favorite- Rick Von Vale- Cardiff
4- S. This is where the list starts to get interesting. Out of the 6 safeties created for the S48 draft, 2 of them are from outside of the USA. Both of these players are from Europe with both being relatively close to each other. My player (Alexandros Sotiris) being from Greece and Leonardo Da Pinchi being from the Tyrrhenian Sea. I'll be honest, I had to look up where that is but after doing so I learned it is most closely associated with Italy and is part of the Mediterranean Sea, which touches Greece. The safeties rank very high on the uniqueness scale and if one or two of them had been from different countries they easily would have made the top 3. I think safety, Rocket Ride missed out on a great opportunity to be from a place from Fortnite. For example "Retail Row" or "Tilted Towers".
My personal favorite- Leonardo Da Pinchi- Tyrrhenian Sea
3- LB. Now entering the top 3 where some of the most creative users reside. The linebackers and safeties really came down to the wire when it came to the 3 spot and honestly, I might've given it to the linebackers to try to avoid being biased. Similar to the safeties, the linebackers have a few players that really boost them up in the uniqueness category. Robot Sunfish is the only player in this draft class to be from South Korea and I'm pretty sure is one of two from the continent of Asia as well. They also have a player from England which helps boost their diversity score. One player that really caught my eye when looking through the linebackers was Adolin Collins from "Collinsville, ???" The question marks make me wonder what this user had in mind. Maybe they just wanted their player to be from a place called "Collinsville" regardless of where that was. I like to think outside the box, however. Maybe Collins was such a renowned player that they named a city or town after him. Maybe Collinsville is its own country who only uses the surname "Collins". I'm just hoping we find out eventually. When it comes to player names alone, I think "Willeh Strong" is a great name as he was created by user WetWilleh. Many users try to tie their player's name into their username and I think this is the best example of that in this class.
My personal favorite- Robot Sunfish- Seoul, South Korea
2- RB- The running backs earn the 2 spot based on their widespread backgrounds. The running backs are the first, and only position on this list to have players from 3 different continents (Unless you count Collinsville as its own). Wait, did I say 3? Almost forgot Australia is its own continent. The running backs have Reuben Mobbs from Australia, Dazen Guile from Vaxjo, Sweden, Zigzag Zipstep from Bukit Batok, Singapore and multiple players from the United States, This means Australia, North America, Europe and Asia are all represented by S48 running backs. Similar to the linebackers you could count a fifth continent if you count "GEG" represented by running back "Sell Canada". I tried Google searching "GEG" to try and find a place but found nothing promising. The first result that comes up is Spokane International Airport, which would be an interesting origin, but I doubt thats what they intended. My best guess is that this user wanted their player to be from Georgia, but it is only them who can explain what they meant.
My personal favorite- Zigzag Zipstep- Bukit Batok, Singapore
1- OT- And finally, the number one most creative position, the offensive tackles. Since this is the number one spot I'll go over all 4 offensive tackles and explain why I like their name and or origin. And yes, I said 4. At the start of this article, I mentioned I would favor positions with more players in their pool and with only 4 players, that would make the offensive tackles a prime example of a position that should be held back by numbers. However, even with only 4 players, the offensive tackles have great diversity, great uniqueness and don't have a single player that I would deem "generic". I'll be mentioning these four tackles in order from least creative to most creative, but keep in mind I think all four are great and would be a top pick in any other position pool. First, we have Stone Wall from NYC. I'm sure other users have thought of this name when creating as a lineman and heck, maybe some users have even used this name before. Either way, it is a classic offensive lineman name that you can't go wrong with. Second, we have Big Tractor from Hewitt, TX. I personally love this name and it would make 100% sense if a big offensive lineman from Texas was given the nickname "Big Tractor". I didn't include renders as part of my ranking, but I really hope Big Tractors render is just a big tractor. (Yes, I know I could just go look, but I don't want to add bias to my rankings). The choice between first and second was a bit harder than 3rd and 4th but ultimately, I'm going to have to give 2nd most creative lineman to Gusztav Farkas from Székesfehérvár, Hungary. This is definitely an offensive lineman that I wouldn't want to line up across from and I'm sure that's what the user had in mind when creating them. I personally think this was the most creative birthplace out of all the offensive lineman, but #1 on the list has them edged out in the name department. So without further ado...
My personal favorite- Acutiramus Bohemius. The perfect combination of a creative name and a Unique birth country. Bohemius is one of my favorite players created in the S48 draft class. The only player from the Czech Republic is a big reason the offensive lineman found themselves at the top of my ranking.
Closing Thoughts: Overall, I think this was a pretty creative draft class. With 4 out of the 7 continents represented (No South America, Africa or Antartica) this draft class will for sure increase the diversity of the DSFL and ultimately the ISFL. On top of four continents, we also had two moons (One fictional) a sea and a few unknowns (GEG and Collinsville). It would be interesting to get some more players from planets within the Star Wars series to see if it would cultivate a rivalry, but I urge users to create their player in any way that best suits them! If you want to make your player from Texas like many from this draft class you do that!
