Hi, I am recent DSFL draftee Terrell Brister! This is my story! (at least up to high school, will do college soon!)
It all started when my parents...
Wait…
That's not appropriate.
Lets just get to my childhood! Now, I am a Masshole *boooooooo you suck!*. Calm down! I was a huge Boston Celtics fan, and I was a GOOD basketball player. My early childhood was really a blur until middle school. I joined my school's basketball team, and was by far the best player on the team. I was tall and had a large wingspan but could also shoot, so I played forward (this was in the era before centers could shoot). After playing all 3 years of middle school, I tried out for my High School basketball team. I was on Junior Varsity my freshman year, and was again the best player. I broke ankles, made pull-ups and fadeaways like they were nothing and was an elite defender. I was a rarity in the fact that I could guard all 5 positions. But things changed, after my sophomore season, I decided I didn’t just want to play basketball. Football was taking over my life, I had just watched the Patriots nearly complete a perfect season, and I became addicted.
When I showed up my Junior year to try out for football. The coach asked us all what position we played. I told him “Defensive back, coach”. He said “Hmmm… You’re Terrell Brister? The Basketball player? You ever play football son?”
“No sir”
“Interesting” He said, rubbing his chin “Alright everyone get lined up! We’re going to do a sprint!”
So, that’s how I became a football player! For those wondering, I came in second place in the sprint. That would change soon. As I entered my Junior football season. I started #3 on the depth chart, playing in the slot mostly. I worked hard! I wanted to be #1, I wanted to lock up the best receivers every week. I was the first to get to practice and the last to leave. When I left, I went straight to the weight room to put on muscle. 3 games in, I got my wish. Our #1 corner went down (sprained ankle), and our #2 corner didn’t match up with the 6’2 wide receiver Bill Wallace that we had to go up against. Before our final practice before the game the Cornerbacks coach told me “You’ve got Wallace. The whole game I want you to follow him, man to man.” So that game the 6’1 me, faced off against the 6’2 Bill Wallace. His stat line? 1 catch for 4 yards, on 8 targets. My statline? 2 Interceptions, 4 passes defended and 1 tackle. I think it’s safe to say that the corner didn’t get his job back.
Shortly afterwards, I asked the Wide Receivers coach to put me through receiver drills to help with my hands. I grinded it out 4 weeks, every day. Going into the 7th game, I was looking to put my name on the map and use some of my new found skill in catching. Coach told us scouts from Boston College would be there since it was a fierce rivalry game, against Revere’s neighboring City (and the town I spent my first few years in) Winthrop. My matchup was the 6’0 speedster, Andre Blayze (Name fits, huh?). Blayze was a Senior, 5 star ranked talent, and my mission was to lock him down. Did I? Find out next time on Drago-
Just kidding! I did. See, the main thing he used to beat corners was his blazing speed and great route running. All that muscle I put on negated both of those, as I was able to stop him at the line in press coverage, just like my coach and I planned. His stat line? 0 Catches on 7 targets. My stat line? 5 Interceptions, 2 Touchdowns. See, not only did I lock him down, I outran the so called speedster on all of my interceptions because on the 3 that I was tackled, it was by a lucky o-lineman or the QB.
After that game is when I got my first letter. From Boston College, they were interested in me! But I wanted to wait until my senior year to pick a college. When I looked my name up online, I saw it. 5. Star. Recruit. Next day, I was named defensive captain. I could change the Defense, and be a true leader.
So far, I was a pretty damn good basketball player, and then to a nickel corner, and then to a 5 star recruit in my junior year. Amazing huh!
To close out my Junior year, we made the state championship. In order to make a statement, before the game I got all the DB’s to get padlocks and start taunting the opposing team’s bench signaling we would lock them down. This was a home game, since with our amazing defense we only lost one game. The crowd went wild when they saw what we were doing and I turned to face them to get them even more fired up!
We deferred the kickoff to get the ball at half. I got the defense ready, calling a blitz to test the QB early. Smart choice I think, since he got hit and floated the ball right into our safety's hands. It would be the first of many mistakes for the QB that day. The offense managed to score a field goal. Very next drive, I line up off man, against my reciever. I look at the QB and recognize the formation. “Patriot Patriot!” I say, to signal to the Corners to press. The ball was going deep, it was a verticals play, and more often than not it’s going to my guy. The ball is snapped! I jab at the guy on the line and sprint down the sideline the QB lobs it my way. The pass is perfect! But he doesn’t have a step on me. Perfect pass vs perfect play. Who wins? Perfect play! The receiver catches the pass as I do and we fall to the ground. I rip it out mid-fall and end up with the pick! Two passes, two picks.
This is the way it went for the QB for most of the game, as we blew them out 44 to 3. It was really lopsided. The defense created turnovers and the offense capitalized. So yes, we did lock them down!
My senior year the team was worse. Pretty much all of our playmakers were off to college. I still finished with 12 Picks.
I had plenty of scholarships to choose from. I wanted to stay close to home, and chose to go to Boston College. I was proud to be an Eagle. Catch my college story in the next part!
