Defensive Line Standouts - Week 10
Welcome to week 10 of our Season 4 Defensive Line Standouts! While the season may be over, the accolades keep on coming. The playoff teams are decided. Let’s see what players helped them get there. Big time players make big plays in big games, so expect to see some repeat performers on our list doing what they do best.
Defensive End Top Performers
E. Charlton ($$) 5 TCK, 4 TFL, 1 SACK
Making just his second appearance on the list this season, Charlton claims our top spot with a stellar performance. With a stat line of 5 tackles, 4 tackles for loss, and a sack, Charlton did what he could against a dominant Arizona team. Facing off against Reg Mackworthy, Charlton was able to stuff him in the backfield 4 times. Despite his efforts, when the clock hit zero, San Jose was on the losing end. Looking ahead, the Sabercats look to bounce back as they host Philly in week 11 as they fight to stay alive in the playoff hunt.
F. Wozy??($ x6) 5 TCK, 1 TFL, 2 SCK
Making his sixth appearance and leading his team to dub city, Wozy finished the week with 5 tackles, 1 tackle for loss and 2 sacks. He continues to be one of the few bright spots on a struggling Yeti squad. This week was different though. Hosting the Baltimore Hawks, the Yeti managed to pull off their first victory of the season and potentially spoil the Hawks’ playoff hopes. While this season is likely a write-off for Colorado, they have to be excited for what they’ve seen so far and what lies ahead in the coming seasons.
J. Tuck ?($x7) 4 TCK, 2 TFL, 1 SCK
Rounding out our Top Performer list this week is a man we are all familiar with, Jayce Tuck. While he has been brought back to mortal status this season, you can still see that he’s one of the most dominant defensive ends in the NSFL. With a stat line of 4 tackles, 2 tackles for loss, and a sack on Orosz, he is still getting it done on the field and the Outlaws record reflects that. Looking ahead, Arizona may have the easiest remaining schedule as they are at home for 3 of their last 4 games.
Other Great Performers
A. Sandoval ?($$$) 5 TCK, 1 TFL, 1 SACK
D. Davidson ?($$$) 3 TCK, 1 TFL, 1 SACK
K. Hendrix ($x7) 2 TCK, 1 TFL, 1 SACK
Antonio Sandoval has adjusted well to the defensive side of the ball. He just barely missed taking Tuck’s place in the top 3. Davidson, while inconsistent, can still be considered an impact player as he makes his 4th appearance on the list. Kurt Hendrix is no stranger here as he makes his 7th appearance.
Defensive Tackle Top Performers
D. Miller??($ x8) 6 TCK, 2 SACKS
No Surprise here. Dan Miller is so consistent, he’s now part of my D-Line Standouts template. While he was able to rack up 6 tackles and 2 sacks, he was not able to pull his team to victory. Still in the playoff hunt through 10 weeks, this team controls its own destiny although the road ahead is not easy. Next up, they head to Philadelphia for game 1 of their 4 game must-win scenario.
G. Clegane ?($ x6) 4 TCK, 1 TFL, 2 SACKS
If I’m being completely honest here, Clegane could have had the top spot this week. With a comparable stat line to Dan Miller, this week these 2 are interchangeable. Call them 1.a and 1.b. this week. Facing the Liberty this week, Clegane contributed 4 tackles, 1 tackle for loss, and 2 sacks as they Philly to just 9 points. Through 10 weeks, Orange County is sitting in their perennial #2 spot although San Jose is clawing their way up. As they host Colorado in week 11, they know whats needs to be done to punch their ticket for the post-season.
B. Bjornsson ?($$$$) 4 TCK, 1 SCK
Much like Jayce Tuck above, Bork’s insane performance in S3 has been slowed down to a reasonable pace. Making his 6th appearance on the list this season, he does so with a modest stat line of 4 tackles and a lone sack on Wallace Stone. The wraiths didn’t need any more from him though as they beat the Legion easily by a double-digit margin. Surprisingly, through 10 weeks, Yellowknife is sitting on top of the NSFC as they head to the desert for their week 11 matchup.
Other Great Performers
Asipi ?($x7) 2 TCK, 2 TFL
E. Kamaka ?($ x5) 6 TCK
B. Metas ??($x5) 4 TCK, 1 TFL
While it didn’t take much for an honorable mention this week, I will still give credit where credit is due. Asipi racked up 2 tackels and 2 tackles for loss in his modest week 10 performance. Eli Kamaka is next on the list. His performance output actually tied Asipi but I gave Aspip the slight nod as I used total list appearances as the tie breaker. Finally, we conclude with Bruce Metas and his 4 tackles and 1 tackle for loss as he just barely makes the list.
Team Appearances After Week 10*
Arizona: 22 +2
Baltimore: 22 +2
Colorado: 17 +2
Las Vegas: 15 +0
Orange County: 12 +1
Philadelphia: 12 +2
Yellowknife: 11 +1
San Jose: 10 +2
There are 2 teams that are clearly ahead of the rest. With 4 games remaining, it would be difficult to imagine either team sliding down the rankings. What might be most surprising is that both Las Vegas and Colorado are in the 3rd and 4th spot. Maybe their defense is just on the field more and can pad their stat line. Regardless of the reasoning, it’s a bright spot on disappointing seasons. Down a few ticks from Las Vegas, you will find Orange County and Philadelphia. At any time, either team is capable of rising up the leaderboard. What I find most shocking that Yellowknife and San Jose are trailing everyone else. Despite having Bork Bjornsson and Dan Miller respectively, those guys can’t do it alone. This late in the season, I could see either of these teams climbing up a little but they likely won’t touch the top half of these rankings.
As always, if you have any comments, corrections, or question, leave them for @manicmav36 below. Any praise can be directed to me though.
*Just a reminder, this ranking is not necessarily indicative of how well a team’s defense is operating as a whole. For example, Arizona leads the league in sacks by 18 but, is currently third on our list in number of individual appearances.
