Hey all, back again with another wide receiving outlook for the S8 crop after a successful first breakdown, GMs you better pay attention to this! Let's break down the statistical break down and work ethic of these guys in looking at week 5 and week 6.
Kansas City | Arkhan Eldwyne II @AzhekAhriman
Week 5
This week I got to see first-hand just how talented the 3-3 Coyotes are, let me tell you something, they are much better than their record indicates. Despite being at .500 they are currently the league's highest scoring team and they're certainly coming into their own. How about Arkhan though? Is he rising to expectations?
Arkhan put up a disappointing 22 yards on 4 catches, with 2 drops and a lost fumble in the second quarter that helped change the momentum of the game in Portland's favor. It was a disappointing game for Arkhan as a whole. Arkhan has been busy in practicing, gaining 25 TPE on his latest update, so you have to wonder if Arkhan got in his head or if the Pythons defense was able to shut him down.
Looking at the game overall it's clear that Kansas City couldn't get their passing game going at all and stuck with their potent running game. Strike wasn't on this game, neither was anyone in the passing game for Kansas City. I'm not going to hold this one against Arkhan, I think he's a talented receiver who was held down by a poor passing game as a whole from Kansas City.
Arkhan has shown a tendency to drop passes though, and I hope that this fumble isn't indicative of a recurring problem. We'll see how it plays out.
Week 6
The Coyotes bounced back this game, putting an absolute hurting on the Polar Bears, winning 38-10. Arkhan had a much better showing putting up 58 yards on 4 receptions, a much needed boost in confidence for himself and for the team.
Arkhan only had one drop this game on six targets, with one erratic throw. It's worth pointing out that his one drop was on an erratic throw as well, and shouldn't be held against him. I liked this game for Kansas City as a whole and for Arkhan in particular. The Coyotes seem to be game planning better as the year goes, and I predict that they will have a more balanced offense by the end of the year.
Outlook
Arkhan is a physically gifted wide receiver with the ability to sometimes make some incredible catches and I see potential in him to be a game changer. I also see him taking plays off occasionally, and failing to connect with his quarterback Mark Strike on relatively routine plays. Last Outlook I had him as a late first round talent, raw but with a high ceiling. This Outlook I'm putting him as an early second rounder.
Things could easily change, and I fully expect the fiery Arkhan to use this as fuel for for the fire. I only have one thing to say to him, go get it man.
Receptions: 17
Yards: 198
AVG: 11.6
TDs: 2
Tijuana | Viggo Squanch @Durden
Of the two big pure receiving prospects, I have to say that I like what Viggo is doing and I have a high grade on him going into the draft and a recent 29 TPE update makes him look even better.
Week 5
Luchadores Luchadores Luchadores! 42-14 win over the Polar Bears with all of the Polar Bears points coming in garbage time. Viggo had a solid game of 4 catches for 58 yards, on 4 targets. What can I say, he made every target count.
While it wasn't an immensely impressive statistical performance, Viggo showed he was reliable and I imagine that if the Polar Bears put up a fight we would have seen Viggo used more.
Week 6
This time the game was much closer, with the Luchadores sneaking by a win in overtime over the Marshalls 27-24. Viggo showed up here today, pulling in 4 catches for 65 yards with a touchdown on 5 targets with the one miss being an erratic throw. Talk about reliable. Call Viggo Old Faithful at this point. He has sticky hands and makes every target count.
Not only did he have a great game statistically speaking, he caught the touchdown that brought the Luchadores to a 24-17 lead over the Marshalls before the Marshalls caught up. This kid can play.
Outlook
Viggo continues to impress me more and more, he's shown to be a reliable receiver who is competitive on every single play. Those hands, my those hands, does any receiver have a lower drop rate than him? If there is I would be shocked. Viggo will almost certainly go in the first round, I'm thinking top four currently as some of the top receivers in the NSFL are aging and teams will be looking for fresh talent. Viggo is the premier guy in this draft and there's not much that will change my mind on this guy.
Receptions: 22
Yards: 286
AVG: 13
TDs: 2
Portland | Maxwell Macbeth @LattimoreIsland
Week 5
Macbeth had a mediocre game overall in a win against a staunch Coyote defense catching 4 passes for 26 yards on 6 targets. One pass watch catchable that he dropped, but overall the Coyotes smothered him. There's not much to say here, it was a minor performance in an important game. It isn't his fault, but it leaves nothing to be said.
Week 6
Another overall forgettable game in 20-14 against the Seawolves. It should be noted that quarterback McCoy had a horrendous game and the team suffered in the passing game for it.
Macbeth put up 24 yards on 4 catches while hauling in a touchdown. The plus side of this performance is that he caught all targets with reliable hands. Unfortunately Macbeth is relatively inactive in practice, only bringing in 7 TPE this week. If he wants to be considered a top draft pick he's going to have to really get more active.
Outlook
I'm getting a lot of comments about my Outlook in regards to Macbeth. People are confused as to why I'm comparing him to receivers, people are also surprised that I'm going this hard on a teammate. Both of these are for the same reason, Macbeth is going to be as good as many of these names someday and tough love is what I've got.
As of now it's going to be tough for a team to justify Macbeth before the second round. Tight end doesn't seem to be a huge need in the NSFL, and Macbeth is still developing. I fully expect him to even come back to the DSFL after he's drafted, he will benefit from the time and ability to work into a scheme. I'm going to teach him all that I know though, he's going to be great.
Receptions: 25
Yards: 194
AVG: 7.8
TDs: 1
Final Thoughts
I look forward to breaking down these receivers as the season progresses. They're exciting and I'm coming off tougher on them than perhaps they deserve. I say to them, use this as fuel. You're where I was last year and this year I'm leading the league in almost every receiving stat now. Keep your chin up, work hard, and you'll be great.
I'll be back after the conclusion of week 8 with another Outlook on these guys!
