Welcome to DSFL Hour on ESPN Radio. Next we talk to the pair of underdog GMs who brought the Ultimini Trophy to Mexico: Epictitus Milburn and Icy Douglas.
So, how did you guys do it? Going into the playoffs you were certainly not favorites to win it all, let alone the first round. How does that happen? Pure luck?
Epictitus: If I have to give credit to anyone specifically it would have to be the players. They pulled through and haven’t stopped pushing to become better players all around. The best part is I can really tell that everyone is out there having fun. I know it’s cliche, and professional is a hard work, don’t get me wrong. But it's also a game. And it’s a blessing to see those who recognize that and love their work. It’s been inspiring for me in more own role as GM. I’m not sure that this alone would have enough, though. Losing in the Ultimini last season was pretty tough. We weren’t blown out, but we weren’t expected to win. We were seen as a team that wasn’t supposed to be there. When you’re up against something like that you can roll over and give up, or you can use it as fuel to motivate yourself to be better. And that’s where I think our team really shined this season.
Icy: Yeah I think after that huge loss in the last regular season game to the Marshals really had people write us off, but I think that is how we like it. Our locker room was hyped all season, and being underdogs doesn’t stop that. I think our wins came both from our guys working hard to get better late season, but also a ton of game planning from Epictitus and I. I also think we owe a lot to our previous GM Payton (@PaytonM34). He and Epictitus put together a great draft class coming in to S8 before I was hired, and that draft class continued to develop throughout the year to make this championship run. So, hats off the Payton, Epictitus, and our players.
Did anything change in S8 compared to S7? Or do you think you just rode the success you had in S7?
Icy: Going into this year, we definitely wanted to ride some of the success that Payton and Epictitus had last year, which came through great drafting and LR culture, but ramp up our analytics and game planning. We implemented a whole new system that helped us get more game planning done with less effort. I know from my end this gave some great insights into what works for our guys and where other teams weaknesses and strengths are. In general, I think it is pretty hard to only ride success from a previous season in the DSFL due to the high turnover of players. The only things that can remain consistent year to year are the LR culture you facilitate and the strategies/experience going into the draft and games. We did get some solid send downs like Thad Pennington, but the majority of our roster was new guys. This is very different from the NSFL, which allows for longevity of a team, and the ability to slowly build a team over time.
Epictitus: Icy said it well. You never know what you’re going to get each year, and each year feels like you’re starting over from scratch. But what did we do different? Well, you know how Portland or Palm Beach or whoever has their Fast Mustard thing? Well, we’ve got our own. We call it Ketchup Quick. *laughter* Really works well when you start so many games in a hole or as underdogs! In all seriousness, Icy Douglas has brought with him a great mind for a winning methodology. Add to that the chip that we had on our shoulders from last season and, in my mind, the rest of the league didn’t stand a chance. I can’t wait to continue down that path as we really build a “cultura de exita” as they say here in Tijuana--a culture of success.
Going into the Ultimini, what did you think your odds of winning were?
Icy: Well, according to our simulations, worse than random chance. We made a lot of changes to our DC and strategy to get our win percentage as high as we could going into the game, but the odds were still stacked against us. The Coyotes just have a solid team. But I think grit comes into play, riding the feeling of winning a underdog game earlier in the week. So, technically speaking low odds, but our best odds.
Epictitus: Yeah, it’s hard to quantify, really. And for all the reasons Icy just mentioned. I’d say we were certainly underdogs. But what’s important is that we knew it was possible. They had the best defense that we saw all year, actually, and one of the top WR prospects in the NSFL draft as well as the top prospect in the upcoming DSFL draft. So I knew that if our defense could just keep them off the board enough to put our offense in the position to strike (no pun intended, who am I kidding, of course it was intended) then we could steal a win. When it came down to it, I was pretty nervous when we went down 17-0. But our defense stepped it up after Thad Pennington lit up the locker room at halftime with a motivational speech for the ages. From there, we climbed our way back into it and, as you know, just like he has all season, Kyle Corbett sealed the deal.
What do you think needs to happen in the S9 draft to make another run for the Ultimini?
Epictitus: We need to put the Ultimini behind us. We got there as a scrappy team, a group of guys fighting for a place in history. If we remain too focused on that Ultimini in our rearview mirror, we’ll get run over so quickly we won’t know what hit us. The Marshals aren’t a team to be taken lightly, and we need to get through them to play for another Ultimini. You can bet we will be laser-focused come time for spring ball to start.
Icy: I think we need to continue to get players who have character and keep our LR culture strong. This is crucial for DSFL teams’ success. We also have some strategic thoughts for this coming draft and season, but I will let you all see that as it unfolds.
What are your thoughts on this draft class?
Epictitus: I’m pretty stoked about it, to be honest. I think there is talent all around and despite having the last pick in the draft, I’m feeling good about out draft prospects. This is my first time actually calling the shots on draft night so I’m excited to our plan into action. Ultimately, I think we are seeing a new era in the DSFL. Thanks to the higher level of talent and some excited Ultimini finished the last two seasons, I think we (meaning the DSFL at large) are getting noticed more and that can only be a good thing.
Icy: This class is deep, particularly in offensive weapons. A ton of QBs for a DSFL draft, which hopefully creates a lot of competition for spots. Overall, from our scouting, I think a lot of players in this class will be superstars in both the DSFL and NSFL.
Any thoughts on the Portland trade for basically the whole 2nd round?
Epictitus: I haven’t looked over the details too much. I saw Portland moved out of first and then took over the second round. Am I missing anything? I mean, it’s fine. I don’t think it will affect us though. Portland is one year removed from a dominating season but I don’t think they’ve been the same since their last GM, Rashad Brooks, left. He was just such a big part of their team identity that it makes me wonder if this is a “find ourselves” kind of rebuild. But who knows. All I know is we’re in a great spot right now and I’m not too concerned with the Pythons. Or any team north of Tijuana, to be frank.
Icy: Aggressive, but smart. I think Portland sees the depth of talent in this class and wants to repeat Portland championship teams of years past. They could be a real threat this year, but I would be happy to get some Ultimini revenge against them for the S7 Luchadores team.
What S8 Luchador players do you think will make excellent long-term players in the NSFL?
Epictitus: Xavier Flash (@Leafs4ever) immediately comes to mind. I was asked recently who I thought the unsung hero of the playoffs were and he was my pick. He’s just been so consistent for us all season and one of the most focused players out there. Don’t be surprised if he is off the draft board early come Friday night. Ricky Adams too. I think he’s been somewhat disregarded due to the committee approach we’ve taken to our rush offense this season, but he had the best YPC of all starting running backs (ie. those with at least 100 touches) at 5.2 yards per carry. He can be an every down back for a team if called upon. But team-wide it’ll be interesting to see who will slide right into starting roles and who will suit up again for some extra work in Tijuana.
Icy: I hope we can get a lot of guys back, its always nice to have vets in the DSFL, but honestly a lot of our S8 guys are going to be studs in the NSFL. Particularly, I can see Flash, Adams (@TheDangaZone), Daquan (@Dmann49), Spaghetti (@Vulgar), and Corbett (@kylecorbett42) being solid players at the next level. Matexas (@daBenchwarmer) could be a really interesting prospect being such a mobile QB, different than a lot of the current offensive systems in the NSFL. I also think Thad (@Blastmeaway) will be a stud for the Wraiths, but we always want Thad to be a Luchador.
Well, there you have it folks. The Ultimini champion Luchadores will be looking to continue winning championships in the DSFL, and making superstars for the NSFL.
