[div align=\\\"center\\\"]Season 11[/div]
The Season 11 regular season is almost upon us, and with it will come six rookies’ first games after being drafted to the Arizona Outlaws! LB Alex Selich, DT Andrew Reese, DT Footballer Sackerman, TE Steven Moore, WR Harvey Kindle, and RB Slim Shady were all drafted to the desert, and team training camp has been proceeding smoothly. Although Moore, Kindle, and Shady will all play one more season in the DSFL, the three defensive players will be joining the starting roster and looking to make an immediate impact to an Outlaws defense that was depleted by retirements from linebacker legends Harrif Ernston, A.C. Hackett, and Luke Tiernan, and longtime Outlaws player -- defensive tackle -- Mark Ramrio. With Selich, Reese, and Sackerman joining a defense with a mixture of youth in safeties Bucky Barnes and Shannon Hobbs, and veteran leadership from safety (starting at cornerback) Darren Morris, the Arizona defense is looking to return to its early days of dominance. And that’s not even mentioning the addition of free agent defensive tackle Mark David this offseason.
The three offensive rookies are all staying down, but they’ve been honing their skills as well. Slim Shady has been working with Hall of Fame lock Reg Mackworthy, while Moore and Kindle work with their counterparts from the S8 draft: Outlaws offensive centerpieces TE Balthazar Crindy and WR Viggo Squanch. And of course, at the head of it all, Kevin Fitzpatrick has been showing the rookies the ropes as he throws them darts.
Dean Jackson is on the third field alone, kicking field goal after field goal, hoping not to blow his perfect record late in the season as he usually does.
As is customary, the team held a press conference one day after practice for the media to talk exclusively to the rooks. Not customary, but will be as of this season: the team has provided a transcript of the press conference for easy reading. Here it is:
Congratulations on reaching the highest level of football: professional ball in the National Simulation Football League! It’s no doubt been a long journey. Did you ever imagine making it this far?
Andrew Reese: “I always hoped that I would come this far, but I certainly didn’t imagine it going the way it did. Obviously, I’ve been a Quarterback for my entire career. I did dabble in other positions early in my youth, but once I got to high school and college, it was QB all the way. Ultimately, the skill cap of the NSFL was too daunting and I knew I was looking at spending most of my career in the DSFL, which wasn’t what I wanted. I knew I wanted to reach the pro level and that meant making some adjustments. Now, I’ve managed to make the move to Defensive Tackle and I haven’t looked back.”
Slim Shady: “For the most part I did imagine making it this far. It has always been my goal since I was a little kid to make it to the majors, or the NSFL as you call it. There have been many bumps in the road, from tearing my ACL in high school and missing out on multiple opportunities to be scouted, to fumbling twice in my first college game and getting benched. There were no obstacles as big however as going undrafted in the DSFL draft. It was shocking to me to be honest, a lot of untalented players and players to do not work hard were drafted and I did not. Glad I made it onto a team though and extremely glad I was drafted in the third round of the NSFL draft.”
Steven Moore: “I imagined it, and I worked hard to make it a reality. Ever since that terrible baseball accident, I wanted to get back into football and prove to everyone I can be a teamplayer and someone the team can rely on to help win games. I worked hard to be the best I can be and I trained hard with my coaches, trainers and General Managers. I worked hard every day, doing drills and trainings to get to where I am right now, the best team in the NSFL. So, yeah I imagined it and I worked damn hard to get here.”
Footballer Sackerman: “I’ve been dreaming of it for a while, and I was fortunate enough to eventually get here. I’ve worked really hard this season to prove myself to the NSFL as a viable option for their D Line and it’s all finally paying off. I was lucky enough to be a defensive tackle in an age where the position is in high demand, which definitely helped me make the show. I trained so hard this season, working on my strength and my foot speed. While I was expecting it to be tough, I knew I could get here with enough hard work and dedication to the sport and after a long grueling season I finally made it to the show.”
Alex Selich: “Of course I always dreamt about but I was never really sure if I would actually be in the NSFL one day. Thankfully I never gave up on that dream and put in a ton effort and sweat to achieve this goal of mine. I wanna use this opportunity to thank everyone that was involved in my career path so far. You all have been a huge contributor to me actually getting drafted to the big league.”
What are you most excited about playing at the professional level?
Andrew Reese: “With my new position change, I’ve spent a lot of time in practice. And I mean A LOT of time. However, I’ve yet to see real action on the defensive side of the ball. I’m really looking forward to the preseason, so I can test my chops and hopefully see all of this hard work start to pay off. On top of that, I was fortunate enough to end up on a great team with a lot of young, promising players. This is a squad that’s going to make a big impact over the next few seasons and I’m glad to be part of that.”
Slim Shady: “The thing that I am the most excited about playing at the professional level is the level of talent that I will be playing against. The NSFL is the best of the best, I will be competing against the best QBs in the world, the best WRs, the best LBs, and so on and so on. Even if my name will not go down in the history books I will be playing and competing against players who will. It really is surreal the level and excellence of the players I will be playing against.”
Steven Moore: “I’m excited to be here. I really wanted to play in Arizona because I heard a lot of good things about this team and I want to help them win as many games as possible. I’m ready to prove to the league and to the other General Managers that they overlooked me and prove everyone I belong here and that I’m a damn good player.”
Footballer Sackerman: “I’m most excited about just being a part of a great team and a great group of guys. My time so far in Arizona has been nothing but outstanding and I really look forward to the season we have ahead of us. While it is always great to be able to showcase my talent to the world, my favorite part is the bonds I’ll make with my teammates. I know that after my career is up and I retire, I’ll remember all the good times with my teammates over the random wins and losses, and that’s what I’m really the most excited about.”
Alex Selich: “The level of competition. Everybody knows that only the best of the best actually play in the NSFL. It's the ultimate stage to showcase your skills and your prowess as a football player. Forcing Fumbles, getting sacks or even safeties in this environment already gives me goosebumps just by thinking about it. I just wanna prove everyone that even a kid from Germany can make it big in the NSFL and maybe even enter the Hall of Fame one day.”
What’s it like joining a team that has the veteran leadership of an all-time great: runningback Reg Mackworthy?
Andrew Reese: “Of course! As a former QB, I know the importance of relying on a great Running Back and I’m sure having a veteran in that role will make Fitzpatrick’s job easier, which is good for everyone. Considering that I’m a defender now, I know we’re going to rely on the offense to score points and stay on the field long enough for us to rest, so that we can do our jobs.”
Slim Shady: “Oh man, I know this question was asked to every rookie that was drafted by the Arizona Outlaws but if feels like it was specifically directed at me as I am the RB who was just drafted to eventually replace him. His presence has been nothing short of spectacular to me so far. I am honored and grateful at the chance to learn behind him for a season before he hands the reigns to me. Like I said before, it is surreal how I am playing with players who will go down as legends but it is even crazier to be the understudy to one of those legends like I am with Mackworthy.”
Steven Moore: “It’s awesome because he gives us a lot of advice and helps us get even better. He’s a great guy in the locker room and is always around to talk football and shoot the shit with. He makes the locker room a better place.”
Footballer Sackerman: “It’s a huge honor to be on a team with a guy like Mackworthy. He’s been in the league for a long time and he gives us a lot of leadership which is very much needed since we have so many rookies. He has really taught all of us not only how to he great players, but true professionals. The guy is a class act and to share a locker room with an all time great is something that I will never forget, and I will never forget all the things that I have learned from him.”
Alex Selich: “It's great. Arizona was a team that is already on the end of their rebuild and I think after the next NSFL Draft we will be a team with scary core of players ready to dominate to league for quite a while. We might not be a playoff team this season but I think the season after this will be the one that you can see some Outlaw playoff games. Reg is an amazing player being drafted in the inaugaral draft. It's great to have a surefire Hall of Famer in the lockerroom he leads by example and shows the rookies what kind of life you have to live in order to become as successful he.”
As a member of Arizona’s largest draft class, and the league’s *largest* and most talented draft class since the inaugural draft, do you feel like there’s extra pressure on you? If so, how do you handle it and prevent stardom from getting to your head?
Andrew Reese: “There is a lot of pressure, but to be honest, I thrive on that. I love the idea that the youth are the driving force behind this team. That’s promising for the long-term. Obviously, this season, we want to make people take notice, but the truth is we’re only going to get scarier each season. In particular, I really want our defense to be the one that everyone dreads going up against. As far as not letting stardom go to my head, I just remind myself that it’s a team effort. We all have to step up if we want to achieve victory. All the stats in the world don’t mean anything if we’re not winning games.”
Slim Shady: “I do not believe that there is any extra pressure on me to perform. I am extremely grateful to be drafted and have the opportunity to prove myself but I was honestly a really late pick. There are still many quality players in the third round but I am not worried at all about whether I will live up to the third round at all. I believe that I am a steal in the third round and my play this season and the seasons that will follow will prove it. There are not many third round picks who will end up being as good as I am, not just from this draft class but in history.”
Steven Moore: “Stardome isn’t important to me, what is important to me that I help my team win and that I prove to my team that I am here to help them win and do whatever it takes to make that a reality. Of course there is some pressure on you, but that’s also just the fact that I’m a rookie on a field with a ton of fantastic guys and vets who know the game better than anyone. So yeah, there’s pressure but I’m ready for it and know I can handle it.”
Footballer Sackerman: “I try not to put a lot if pressure on myself. I know that there will always be growing pains for myself and all of us so I just try to roll with the punches as they come. Being a star isn’t really the most important thing to me. I have my DSFL and now NSFL teammate Andrew Reece to take all that spotlight and I am completely fine with that. I’ve never been the type of guy to be the star of the show. I am happy to be a great supporting member of this amazing Outlaws defense and a part of this team. I know I won’t be the best player and I won’t even be the best player on our D Line, but I will always try my best and support my team and make those clutch plays when I am needed.”
Alex Selich: “I think there is some added pressure on me but not that much to be quite honest. I already put a lot of pressure on myself being one of the best in my craft. I am eager to show everyone that Arizona did not make a mistake by drafting Alex Selich and very eager to shut up my critics. As for how I handle it. Just wind down each evening with playing games and going out with friends to stay grounded and don't live in a big house or anything. My parents also do their part in keeping me grounded. I do attend small parties of friends here and there but it's not as serious as going out to clubs on weekdays or anything just some quality time with the people around me.”
