I just wanted to catch up with all my fans before the playoffs start for the prospects. If you didn't see it, my team, the Pomona Mongoose, finished the round robin phase 4-2. Those darn Cobras got the best of us twice already. I just hope we get another chance at them in the playoffs and claim Prospect Bowl victory for the Mongooses, or is it Mongeese? What even is a Mongoose? Biology was not my strong suit in college. That's why I studied Mechanical Engineering.
Anyway, after the six games of the round robin I have amassed 27 tackles and 3 pass defenses. My speed on the field is definitely helping me get lots of tackles. I really hope I have impressed the scouts out here with my play so far. I have had a couple different teams reach out and talk with me. It is nice to see that there are teams interested in giving me a shot in the DSFL. Speaking of the DSFL, what does that even stand for? Developmental Simulation Football League? That's my only guess, so if that's not right let me know.
I am not going to lie I am pumped up for the DSFL draft. I am just ready to get on a team and start developing my skills further. I have many areas that I want to improve. First and foremost, I want to improve my knowledge of the game. Hopefully once I get drafted I can sit down and watch a lot of film and learn not only what to look for when I am tasked with covering a wide receiver one on one, but also what things to look for pre snap from the formation and the quarterback so I can make the correct read on the ball and start accumulating interceptions, which is my most important goal.
In order to get interceptions I also need to work on improving my catching skills. Hopefully I can get some good gloves, which might help some as well as spending all the time I possibly can in front of the jugs machine. I played wide receiver back in high school, so I am confident that with some practice I can get to the point I need to so that I can turn pass deflections into interceptions.
Unfortunately, I am not perfect and sometimes the wide receiver I am covering will catch the ball. With that in mind I need to improve my tackling ability in order to not give up more yards to the receiver I am covering. That will probably be a combination of hitting the weights with my new team and maybe I can also get some help from a linebacker to work on my tackling technique, so that I do not get run over by wide receivers I am trying to tackle in the open field. That is just too embarrassing and I would hate to show up on the wrong side of a highlight reel.
I have aspirations to be a punt and or kick returner in the DSFL. I have the speed for it already, but I need to work on my shiftiness in order to be a truly great returner. You might be wondering why I want to be a returner as well as a corner. A couple reasons, first, I feel that if I get good at returning that will help out my team and give us a better shot at winning the Ultimini. Also, selfishly I feel that if I show I can not only be a shut down corner, but also a great returner that I will be set apart from my peers at corner and I will be drafted earlier when it comes time for the NSFL draft.
As you can see I have a lot to work on, but I also have a plan on what I am going to do to get better in all these areas. I hope you have enjoyed this little trip inside the mind of a prospect. If you want more of this let me know. I have a plan to do a piece before all my games once I get to the DSFL to do a deep dive into the wide receivers I will be facing off against in that weeks game. I hope that sounds interesting to you.
