Well we have learned a lot about kicking in the first season of the NSFL, we learned that early on a kicker might want to use their points toward intelligence so that they are at least kicking consistently and then work on improving accuracy and power, aka the Brandon Walsh build. Sadly the early legend has begun to be out done by other kickers with much higher TPE.
There is currently a tie for the longest field goal (I think) The Booter and Turkleton are tied at 55 yards. Although Kicksit kicked a 57 in the playoffs I am not sure how that figures into the record since it was in the post season hopefully someone will comment below and tell whats up. Currently though it is not coming up on the chart that I normally look at so I dont think it count or it doesnt count towards the regular season record. But we all know it happened. These three are the top 3 in the league and it will be interesting to see their development. They are all Power archetypes and will all be having punting duties next season as the teams with both a punter and a kicker slowly die out.
The Otter are the only one that have a punter and he is still the only active punter to not have a punt over 60 yards and a below average punt, despite having the most powerful leg in the league. Now with Kicksit taking over the punting duties for the in suddenly inactive Jimmy Darkapple in the playoffs and doing well I except them to keep the change and cut Darkapple. Also Stephen Harris signed with the Liberty to be their double duty kicker, I would expect him to join the top 3 very quickly. I also expect Harris to set the kicking market in motion this offseason.
We have a few new kickers coming on the scene for season 2. R. Tarkenton had a rough start coming in half way through S1 and trying to fill the big shoes of the best inactive kicker we will ever know most likely. Hopefully he will stay active and bounce back in S2. He showed promise in the last rookie game of the year when he crushed a 52 yarder to send the game into overtime. J. Vanderjagt is a prospect who has performed well hitting the game winning field goal in overtime to win the last rookie game. Finally I think J Jerek is a punter coming on in S2 it will be interesting to see if he start kicking field goals or if he wants to be a punter. He has performed well averaging 45 yards a punt in his last game.
I do expect the punter to eventually die out. They just dont offer anything that a kicker cant do. Unless the league comes in and says that a team has to have a kicker and a punter and they have to be different players. That is the only way I think punters stay around. If not I see teams adding some inactive kicker for the veteran minimum like the Wraiths with Ryan Ellis to sit behind the starter just in case something crazy happens.
All in all it has been a great season for kicking I think moving forward teams that will be looking for new kickers are the Otters, Sabercats, Outlaws and the Legion. It will be interesting to see how that all shapes out in this years draft and with Legion not have a pick till the 6th rounder and kickers being few and far between I wonder if that will cause problems for them or if they would pick up the inactive Brandon Walsh. He got a few Probowl vote this year.
Kicker Power Rankings
1. Archibald Booter
The Booter is leading the league in points at 106 with the next closet player at 91. He also is tied for the longest field goal in the league at 55 yards (depending on if Kicksits counts). On top of this he came in the clutch for his team in the playoffs scoring their only points and pinning 5 punts inside the 20 despite the lose. Booter also hold the record for the longest punt at 69 yards. All in all he holds on is tied for all the records in the league, except field goal percentage which is something the next two have over him.
2. Bojo Kicksit
This man has come along way he started the season with some accuracy concerns but quickly show everyone wrong and continued to improve through out the season taking over punting duties in the playoffs averaging an okay 43 yards a punt but having a punt of 60 and 59 in each game. He will adjust to doing double duty and will continue to improve in punting. Also in the playoffs he kicked a 57 yard field goal showing off his big leg and potentially setting a new record.
3. Tark Turkleton
This guy sadly is on a team that tanked the end of the season and he didnt get much love for it. While his team spiraled out of control Turkleton stayed consistent and steady trying to keep the team in games as much as he could. He is currently tied for the longest field goal record at 55 and has the best field goal percentage in the league. Going into season 2 he will look to take over the punting duties as Stephen Harris has signed on with the Liberty.
4. Stephen Harris
I look for him to take this spot very fast and maybe even move up more as the season progresses. I except him to carry the Liberty through their growing pains in their first season in the league.
5. R. Tarkenton
He has had a rough go at it but at least we have seen him play under the big lights and you know what you are getting. Hopefully he can improve.
6. J. Vandergat
He has alot of hype coming out of the season but has only played in rookie games. I am not sure how much that affects play but I think he will be the first kicker off the board come draft time but I dont want to power rank him based on hype.
I expect Adrienne Nugent, and Kentillan Laces to be out of a job after the draft.
Bring on the question, counter points and praise!
