I wrote the following for the PT2 task but realized after posting it that the prompt asks for a currently retired player, which is not the case for Gimmy. Oops. I figured I might as well post it to media so other people can learn about the Legend.
I'm new to the league and don't know too much about the history of players that I didn't follow as a fan. But as a rookie in the DSFL researching the situation and history, I heard a lot about the famous QB Gimmy Jaroppolo who seemed to be a legend for his performance in the prospect bowl. But, he ended up being an inactive player and never created an update thread of claimed any TPE. I figured he could still have a case for the Hall of Fame on the grounds of fame rather than sustained career and figured I'd see how great he was in the prospect bowl and breathlessly extrapolate how great he could have been if he'd stayed active. So, let me as someone who wasn't there educate others who were also not there (and maybe some of you that were).
The S15 prospect bowl featured 6 teams playing 5 games just over a year ago as a response to a nearly record-sized recruitment class. Gimmy was the QB for the Central Grizzlies on an offense that included other well-known names of RBs Forrest Gump and Dofus Jimbo and WR Ahri Espeeyeeseetee. Surely, with that kind of talent, the team would do some amazing things? Well, Gimmy did amaze by throwing 13 interceptions in the 5 round robin games (thanks to @TomHanks for the link) which is impressive. However, that was good enough to be in the top 4 and make the playoffs. He and the Grizzlies won the semifinals over the Foxes but lost in the finals to the Owls and I couldn't find int numbers. Various media articles from that time point out his deficiencies. So, where did the legendary part come from? I'm not sure. Gimmy also played in the S18 prospect bowl (possibly the only player to ever do that, but I don't know how easy that is to verify) but only threw 7 INTs in 6 games and didn't make the finals. He was the last draft pick of the S14 DSFL draft which tends to give some notoriety, but unlike this year's last pick, MB QB Tom Sofa, he didn't take that as a challenge and rise to activity. @gucci wrote up an article on 'where are they now' for the S14 SeaWolves which notes that Gimmy has poor S18 and S19 seasons as a starter, going a combined 2-26. And lastly, Gimmy is the only player I found who has a discord server in his honor, which is a point in favor of the fame side.
So, should Gimmy be in the Hall of Fame? His existence is certainly legendary, but I don't think I can make the case for it on stats. Might he be the most notorious player, someone without whom the NSFL history is incomplete? Maybe. Perhaps some of the players who were on the S15 prospect bowl or in the DSFL will write about their experiences so that we can get a first-hand relation of the games and their views on Gimmy's HOF case after his retirement.
Prompt Wrote:Written Option: The Hall of Fame S19 Class has just been released, inducting five new legendary players into the Hall. In 200 words or more, make the case for a currently retired player to be inducted in a future class. Why do they deserve a slot over other contenders? Don’t be afraid to put some research into it if you are unfamiliar with older players.
