[div align=\\\"center\\\"]San Jose Sabercats Season 21 Recap and Season 22 Preview[/div]
Season 21 Recap
Going into season 21 the San Jose Sabercats were looking to improve from their unsuccessful season 20. They finished season 20 at the bottom of the ASFC with a 5-8 record. Their defense and offense was average in that season and suffered from a horrible start of the season losing their 3 first games.
The San Jose front office signed some significant pieces in the season 21 draft and are looking for these players to contribute right away. HeHateMe PickSix and Leon McDavid have been the young leaders of the Sabercat season 21 draft class and got plenty of playing time in season 21.
The season did not go well for the Sabercats as they finished with a record of 4-10 and had one of the worst offenses in the league ranking 10th in points per game and passing yards per game. The bright spots for this team in season 21 were the defense and running game. San Jose finished 4th in the league in rushing yards and Sabercat running back Quindarius Tyrucker finished 3rd in the league in rushing. The defense was ranked 3rd in the league in points allowed and 2nd for total yards and passing yards allowed.
Overall this team has a solid defense and running game but they struggle when asked to rely on their passing attack and being behind big in games like they were in season 21 put them in that situation. The offense could not convert opportunities in the red zone and that proved to be one of the biggest downfalls of them in season 21. This team expected more out of the season than 4 wins and will be looking to use their negativity as motivation for improvement in season 22.
Week 1
@ Orange County Otters
L 10-27
Record after week: 0-1
Going into week 1 the Sabercats had a tough matchup on the road against the historically good Orange County Otters. San Jose was a big underdog in this game and the results showed that to be correct. They never really had a chance in this game as the Sabercat offense did little on the field scoring only 10 points. San Jose’s defense was not much better but particularly their passing defense as they allowed 10.8 yard per pass and 194 receiving yards between the two Orange County Otter receivers. This was a poor start to the season for the Sabercats.
Week 2
vs New Orleans Second Line
L 15-27
Record after week: 0-2
The San Jose Sabercats followed up their poor performance in Orange County with an almost worst performance in their home opener against the New Orleans Second Line. The Sabercat offense was smothered by the Second Line defense all game and did not score their first points till 1:46 left in the first half. Defense was also non-existent for the Sabercats in the first half as they allowed 20 points. The defense did step in up in the second half of the game allowing only 7 more points but the San Jose offense could not get anything done and were kept out of the endzone all game. Sabercat Kicker Kicky Bobby had a great game where he scored 5 field goals out of 5 attempts.
Week 3
@ Yellowknife Wraiths
W 30-14
Record after week: 1-2
After two abysmal performances in weeks one and two the San Jose Sabercats came up with a big road win to try to build momentum back on their side. The roster played like a completely different team on both sides of the ball in this game jumping out to a 21-0 lead in the second quarter. This was in large part to the great first half from Sabercat quarterback Dan Wright where he scored 2 touchdowns. The San Jose defense also rose to the occasion in the 4th quarter when Joseph Wozniak returned an interception 19 yards for a touchdown. Third down efficiency was big for San Jose as they converted 8 for 14 on offense and only allowed 3 for 11 on defense.
Week 4
Vs Austin Copperheads
L 19-22
Record after week: 1-3
Coming off a great performance in week 3 San Jose had one of the toughest losses of their season at home against the Copperheads. This was a back and forth game where there were 3 lead changes and 3 ties throughout the 4 quarters. Both teams' defenses shined in this game as no touchdown was scored by either team till the last play of the third quarter. Going into the 4th the game was tied at 12-12 and looking to come down to the wire. After a 20 yard touchdown pass by the Copperheads the Sabercats responded with an 80 yard touchdown drive to tie it up again at 19-19 with under 7 minutes left. Austin’s offense ended up getting a huge 39 yard pass completion to put them in field goal range and take a 22-19 lead with 2:46 left on the clock. After an amazing drive to get within field goal range Sabercat kicker Kicky Bobby missed a 50 yard field goal to tie the game. This was a huge turning point for this San Jose team as they fell to 1-3 instead of 2-2 on the season.
Week 5
@ Arizona Outlaws
L 17-30
Record after week: 1-4
After such an emotional loss in week 4 the San Jose Sabercats headed to Arizona to take on the Outlaws in a game that proved to be a passing showcase for both teams. The Sabercats were able to jump out to an early 10-0 lead in the first but did little else the rest of the game getting outscored 30-7 after. The ball was flying all over the field in this game as both teams had two receivers with 100 plus receiving yards. Both quarterbacks also had passer ratings over 100 as defense was not a highlight of this game.
Week 6
@ New Orleans Second Line
L 9-23
Record after week: 1-5
The Sabercats continued to trend downward In their second and final game on the road against the New Orleans Second Line. Even though the Sabercats trailed the whole game there were some great performances by the San Jose passing attack. Dan Wright threw for 308 yards and 1 touchdown and Action Jackson collected 7 catches for 119 yards. Turnovers and lack of red zone scoring ended up being the downfall for San Jose as they lost the turnover ratio -2 and failed to convert big downs in the game.
Week 7
@ Austin Copperheads
L 14-28
Record after week: 1-6
The downward spiral of the San Jose Sabercats season continued in this game as they lost on the road to the Austin Copperheads. This is the same team that narrowly beat the Sabercats in week 4 in one of the best games of the season. This was another tough loss to swallow for San Jose as they were up 14-6 at the end of the first half but failed to seal the deal. That changed in the second half as Austin outscored them 22-0 to come back and win the game. This offense is built to ground and pound and Dan Wright had a tough game throwing the ball in this one with a 45.2 passing rating. The San Jose rushing game did look dominant with Quindarius Tyrucker scoring two touchdowns and rushing for 125 yards.
Week 8
Vs Arizona Outlaws
W 26-14
Record after week: 2-6
The skid finally came to an end for the San Jose Sabercats in week 8 as they got a big win at home over the Arizona Outlaws. After the shootout in their first meeting the Sabercat defense looked much improved in their second meeting against the pass heavy Outlaws. They held them scoreless through 3 quarters, only allowed 67 rushing yards and started the first play of the game by sacking the Arizona quarterback for a safety. This game was Sabercat football at its best with the offense and defense running on all cylinders. If they could play like this every week they would be a bubble playoff team.
Week 9
Vs Orange County Otters
L 16-34
Result after week: 2-7
Coming into their second matchup with the Orange County Otters the Sabercats were looking to build off their great win in week 8. They once again failed to raise their level of play when going up against the top teams in the league. Although they trailed the whole game the stat lines for both teams were very close and it came down to the Sabercats inability to convert 3rd and 4th downs. They converted 1 of 11 attempts on 3rd down and went 0 for 2 on 4th down.San Jose was within one score in the third quarter before being outscored 17-3.

L 14-23
Result after week: 2-9
This was another tough loss for the San Jose Sabercats as there were 5 lead changes in this game. Week 11
Vs Chicago Butchers
W 27-10
Result after week: 3-9
The Sabercats responded to their weeks 9 and 10 losses in a big way in this game. The Offensive side of the ball look much better as well as Dan Wright threw for 195 yards and 2 touchdowns and Quindarius Tyrucker rushing for 147 yards and 1 touchdown. This was another iconic Sabercat win for the season as they controlled the ball and kept constant pressure on the Butchers for 4 quarters.
Week 12
@ Philadelphia Liberty
W 15-13
Result after week: 4-9
The San Jose Sabercats followed up their outstanding win in Week 11 with a close win over the Liberty. This Sabercat offense continued their trend of red zone inefficiency and could not find the end zone outside of a first quarter Tyerucker touchdown run. This win was all on the backs of the San Jose defense as they held the Liberty to only 257 total yards and tackled Philadelphia running back Torenson for a safety. When they needed it the most the defense showed up by only allowing 1 first down in the 4th quarter.
Week 13
Vs Colorado Yeti
L 9-24
Record after week: 4-10
In the last game of the season the San Jose Sabercats laid an egg against the Colorado Yeti. The offense once again failed to do anything scoring only 9 points and turning the ball over 3 times. This San Jose defense once again kept them close in the first half but the game got out of hand in the second half. Some of the Sabercat players must have already been on vacation in their heads as many players had some of their worst games of the season. Not a great way to end out the year.
Week 14

Season 22 Preview:
Season 22 Record Prediction: 9-5
This San Jose team is a lot better than what their 4-10 record in season 21 may say about them. With expansion happening this offseason and the Sabercats having one the better drafts this roster can have one of the best defenses in the league. The more you look at this team and their roster the more you will see they are a few pieces away from being contenders.
Their biggest woes offensively last season came from their inability to finish in the red zone on offense. This combined with some slow first halfs and poor quarterback play left them constantly behind in games. The Sabercat running game is their bread and butter on offense and their success depends on them having long sustaining drives that take the air out of the football. When they can do this it sets up the play action pass to star wide receiver Action Jackson for huge gains like his season long 54 yard touchdown last year. If this offense can figure out how to finish drives they can see a big improvement in season 22. The addition of running back Jamar Lackson in the 7th round of the draft will add some more depth to their solid running game. GM and season 22 draftee QB Monty Jack will have another year of development in the DSFL and should have a strong running game to support him in season 23 when he gets his first snaps in San Jose.
On the defensive side of the ball is where San Jose are building a championship level roster. 7 of the 12 picks in the draft were on the defensive side of the ball and they added superstar potential talent in the defensive backfield and linebacker spots. This defense which was already led by one of the best pass rushers in Tyron Brackenridge got two more linebackers that look to be max potential players. Season 22 rookie linebackers Lawerence Bass and George ‘Corpsegrinder’ Fisher were both top linebackers last season in the DSFL and great picks by the Sabercat GMs. Drafting the duo of Chester Sweets and Cadillac Harris at the corner spots to pair with HeHateMe PickSix was another amazing move in the draft for the Sabercats. Both Sweets and Harris look to be top earners and this San Jose defense is a set up to have 6 max earning players on defense for the next chapter in Sabercat football.
Rookie cornerback and Sabercat first round pick Chester Sweets and star wide receiver Action Jackson had some choice words about this upcoming season and roster. Sweets has already bonded with many of the San Jose players and Jackson is ready to be a leader in the locker room.
"We have a lot of young talent on this team. These last two years have been big for the Sabercats, especially on defense. Looking across the defense and seeing guys like HeHateMe PickSix..man...I know I have a lot of work to do. We all do. I feel lucky to have these guys beside me. Especially Bass. We met a while back and he's one of my favorite people in the league, not to mention talented. We also have my old teammate, K/P Matty McDairmid. I couldn't be happier to be matched up with him again. We gained a guy who is going to be a solid contributor, both on the field and in the locker room. Picking up Jamar Lackson, as late as we did.. what a steal. That was a huge pick up. Him and Cadrissian are going to be monsters for us on the offensive side. We know it's been a few season since San Jose has won an Ultimus, and we want be the ones to lead the team back. We aren't afraid to work," said Sweets.
"I think people will be sleeping on us this season but we have a really good team and a great GM. I'm ready to lead the league in rec stats as we roll to the playoffs," said Jackson.
This team will be an exciting one to watch in the next few seasons. They will be a playoff team in 2 to 3 seasons from now and once you make the playoffs who knows what could happen. This roster could be that start of bringing an Ultimus back to San Jose.
