This is the story of one of the greatest performances of the season, one that hasn’t been seen since the origins of the National Simulation Football League. A performance that has never been seen before, one that breaks a record that has stood for 22 seasons. This record wasn’t accomplished on the football field but at the pre draft combine that occurred before the season 22 draft.
On this day, Bruce Buckley went thorugh all of the drills he was required to complete.
The Wonderlic: Bruce Buckley completed the Wonderlic and received a score of 25 on the examination. This is an above average result which was a positive result for Buckley as it shows he has the intelligence to read blocking assignments at the professional level.
40 Yard Dash: Bruce Buckley completed the sprint in 4.96 seconds, which was one of the fastest runs by an offensive lineman in the combine. It was .15 seconds faster then the Incredible run set by Mekhi Becton in the 2020 NFL Draft. This illustrates that Buckley has the speed required to play tackle and to set the edge on the outside for Baby Yoda on his tremendous runs.
Vertical Jump: Bruce Buckley achieved a vertical jump of 25.1 which again was the highest score by Offesnive Lineman in the combine. It illustrates the athletic ability of Bruce Buckley
Broad Jump: Buckley had a broad jump of 91.4 which was again the best Offensive Lineman score and shows this athleticism again.
20 yard shuttle: 4.84 seconds, only 2 hundredths of a second behind the fastest time for Offensive Lineman.
3 Cone Drill: 7.61 seconds, fastest by an Offensive Lineman.
Bruce Buckley had performed incredibly well in all of the drills so far and has shown why he was on the premiere Offensive Line talent in the draft but there was one more drill left to go, it was the most important one for the offensive line. It is a test of strength, endurance and agility, it is the bench press.
Bruce Buckley laid down on that bench and got ready, his hands were powedered and ready to grip the bar. Buckley grabbed the bar and brought it down to his chest, he took a deep breath and was ready to go.
The 1st Rep: The bar was light as a feather, and went to the sky with ease, Buckley laughed as the ease of the rep made him wonder why the quareterbacks and kickers couldn’t even complete this one.
The 2nd Rep: A stroll in the park. Buckley added the group of wide receivers who only completed 2 to his list of people to laugh at on twitter
The 3rd Rep: Easy as counting to 3
The 4th Rep: Just like eating pancakes
The 5th Rep: Was as simple as 1v1ing a cornerback
The 6th Rep: As basic as kindergarten. This rep was especially important to Buckley as he was now based the loud-mouthed Zamir Kehla who could only muster 5 reps with his twig like arms.
The 7th Rep: Easy
The 8th Rep: Yawn
The 9th Rep: Was that a bird?
The 10th Rep: Is there weight on this bar?
The 11th Rep: Oh yeah, there is apparently
The 12th Rep: I’m pretty bored, not gonna lie
The 13th Rep: I’m not even sweating
The 14th Rep: Up and down like a elevator
The 15th Rep: Simple
The 16th Rep: A breeze
The 17th Rep: I need a pillow
The 18th Rep: My foot is itchy, I should scratch it
The 19th Rep: I’m doing this one with one hand
The 20th Rep: Time for a breather
The first twenty reps were an ease, the bar felt like nothing and was able to go up and down like a robot. The heart had barely started to raise and there was no sweat evident anywhere on his body. This was simple to him but he had already past about one hundred other prospects who couldn’t get to this mark. Buckley knew he had plenty of more left in him but how much would he actually be able to accomplish.
The 21st Rep: For the first time, there felt like there was actual weight on the bar, but it just felt like holding a newborn baby and rising it up to the world like Simba in the Lion King. The thought of this amused Bruce Buckley.
The 22nd Rep: Laughing at his own simba reference
The 23rd Rep: Still laughing
The 24th Rep: Recovering from his laughter attack.
The 25th Rep: The first bead of sweat is dripping down his eyebrow.
The 26th Rep: The weight feels like its increasing slowly but it is still extremely manageable
The 27th Rep: A little bit more pressure required
The 28th rep: Buckley celebrates as his passes his first Offensive Lineman counterpart, Toshihide Matsumoto who only got 28 reps in his attempt on the bench press.
The 29th Rep: Passing the first lineman has spurred on Buckley who has got a second wind of energy as a result.
The 30th Rep: Second wind is still pushing.
30 reps down and Bruce Buckley is still moving, a little bit more resistance is occurring but it still seems like a breeze. 40 is on the cards but how much more is the real question.
The 31st Rep: The bar is starting to dig in to the hands and the chest, it requires more effort to lift but it is still moving
The 32nd Rep: A slight change in grip leads to a struggle on this rep. Buckley clears it, he now goes past Jorcher Minor, Fernando Cruz, Julius Augustus and Gabe Nickson. He also goes past the pathetic Heath Evans.
The 33rd Rep: Bar is getting heavier
The 34th Rep: Sweaty palms are starting to develop, loosening the grip on the bar.
The 35th Rep: More effort is required, the bar is starting to get harder to life. James Carson is based
The 36th Rep: Slyvester Berlin is passed, as every other offensive lineman is passed, Bruce Buckley gets stronger and more determined as he passes his Offensive Line colleagues.
The 37th Rep: His body is starting to tire, especially his knees and arms.
The 38th Rep: Bruce Buckley’s mother is around, cooking her famous Italian
The 39th Rep: More sweat is being generated. Add Joey McCabe to the list of lineman based.
The 40th Rep: The bar has left a stain on his shirt, that looks a bit like vomit. He is equal with Tommy Sacamano
Buckley has now reached 40 reps on the bench press but there have been several struggles during the last 10 reps, to summarise them:
His Palms are sweaty
Knees Weak, Arms are Heavy
There’s vomit on his sweaty already
Mum’s spaghetti
He’s nervous
But on the surface, he looks calm and ready.
The 41st Rep: The bar is getting heavy, each rep is getting harder and harder. There are only 7 people in front of him from this draft class.
The 42nd Rep: Buckley is starting to really struglle now, a lot of effort is required to get the bar up.
The 43rd Rep: Buckley looks like he is fading, his face is saying it all. He is equal with Byron Dolls.
The 44th Rep: The pain is especially noticeable on the face of Bruce Buckley. Only Magnus Rikiya and Calvin Golladay are ahead of him.
The 45th Rep: Buckley wants to quit but he tries to push out number 45. He gets there but there are signs of pain and trauma on his face. All expressions on his face have disappeared and he seems to be placed into a trance.
The 46th Rep: Buckley has accomplished almost everything he has wanted too, he passed all but 2 of the draft candidates and has show his worth in this drill as well as the others. He has almost called it quits but was able to grunt his way through to a completion of the rep.
The 47th Rep: Knowing that this rep will tie the record for this combine and the overall combine record, Bruce Buckley mustered all of the remaining energy and completed the rep. He was now a record holder in the combine which he held with Rikiya, Golladay and others that completed the combine in previous years.
The 48th Rep: Everyone gasped has Buckley brought the bar down after Rep 47, everyone expected him to call it a day and join the 47 club. Buckley remained expressionless and his eyes were glazed over. His arms started to push the bar above his chest and it went up slowly, all the power went into the arms and the bar raised even more. It was almost at the top of the rep but it wasn’t there yet. A grunt and yell of power came through the combine building as Buckley pushed the bar as high as he can and completed the Rep. He was the first man to complete the 48th Rep.
Buckley celebrated the rep and was providing interviews to the media as they congregated to document the historical event. Buckley said “My mind was glazed over, but I saw a magical Unicorn that guided me to Rep 48”.
He was the first player to get to Rep 48 and is now the current owner of the combine record. He is the first player to set a combine record since the very first combine in the debut season of the National Simulation Football League. For the first time in 22 seasons, a combine record was broken and that record belongs to Bruce Buckley.
