(Yes, I know the DSFL Draft Day was a long time ago, but I started this series like a month ago and I wanted to get back into it; so I figured I would give like a brief recap of Bowie’s rookie year. I hope everyone enjoys it.)
The sun slowly rises over the familiar scene of the Blue Ridge Mountains off in the distance of the Bowie family farm. Maverick can be seen tending to the horses and taking care of tasks around the home. “It’s good to be back home.” said Bowie as he sat down on a bench outside the family’s stables. “I loved Dallas but man the big city is so much different than what I am used to.” Tonight is a big night for Bowie as well as all the other DSFL rookies because it is finally draft night. The night where all S24 ISFL rookies figure out where their careers are going to begin. “My time in Dallas was great, but it was always hard to get settled there because I knew it was probably only a temporary situation, as much as I loved the team, I know my chances of being drafted there are pretty slim.” Bowie did not spend much time on the field during his brief stay in Dallas. “I am itching to know where I am going to be, and I can’t wait to make an impact.”
As the day slowly passed by, Bowie and some of his family gathered at their place to tune in and watch the draft. As the festivities began, the mood in the room became noticeably more tense as everyone began holding their breath, waiting to find out where this young man from the backwoods would begin his professional football career. The first team on the clock was the Kansas City Coyotes and with not surprise their pick was Asher Montain, the DE out of the University of Alabama. Asher is also the brother to current ISFL DT Tyler Montain, both of which are really good friends of Maverick so upon seeing the pick he promptly sent a congratulation message to the new KC star. Prior to the draft Bowie was asked where he thought he might end up, “I honestly have no idea, I think I have the potential to be a first-round pick, but you never know.” A few more picks came off the board until Dallas Birddogs came up with the 4th overall pick where they selected Zoe Watts, RB out of Standford. Bowie and Watts had been teammates in Dallas so Maverick had a slight smirk on his face when he saw that she would be getting to stay in Dallas.
After pick 5-7 came in you could tell that Bowie was a little uncomfortable despite his calm demeanor. “Yeah I was really thinking that I might end up in Norfolk, but they ended up going with Quentin Button, and it looks like Minnesota and London both were prioritizing LBs over any DB needs.” At this time, the reigning champs were on the clock, Tijuana, and Bowie’s phone finally rang. Everyone in the room immediately began listening to the conversation Maverick was having and when he hung up the phone, he had a huge smile on his face. At this moment Tijuana announced their pick. “With the 8th overall pick of the S23 DSFL Draft, the Tijuana Luchadores select Maverick Bowie S out of Liberty University.” Upon hearing the announcement, the entire Bowie house erupted with joy as everyone crowded around to hug the new S for the Luchadores. It was a rather touching moment to watch as anyone could tell how much this meant to not only Bowie but his entire family as well.
“I am a Luchador baby!” announced an ecstatic Bowie as he threw on the Tijuana hat during his interview with us the next morning. “Honestly I really enjoyed being scouted by them but I thought there was really no way that I would fall to them, and they seemed to share my thoughts on the matter; so when I was still available for their pick I was feeling quite confident they were going to take me. They just lost their superstar safety to the ISFL so it seemed like the perfect fit.” Tijuana is the most successful franchise in DSFL history, and they are just coming off a season where they added to that success when they won their 7th Ultimini. “I also want to give a shout out to the big guy Brach Thomaslacher who got drafted last night in the 3rd round by KC. He’s a really good dude and I wish him all the best. They are going to have a really stout defense over there.”
As the interview concluded Bowie began loading his things up in the moving truck that was going to meet him down in Mexico. “Yeah I feel like I am off on a vacation if I am honest.” Chuckled Bowie as he grabbed his bags for his flight. “It’s different this time,” he said as he gazed around at his family’s property, “I don’t really know when I will be back, this really is the beginning of something completely new. I guess I should have paid better attention in my high school Spanish class.” And with that, Bowie loaded up and headed out to the beaches of Mexico.
“Hola!” shouted Bowie from his new beachfront condo in Tijuana. He has been in Tijuana for almost a month now and his first official game with Tijuana is next week at Dallas. Bowie had a pretty solid preseason for the Luchadores posting a stat-line of 26 tackles, 1 pass-defended, 1 interception, and 1 touchdown. He even received the DPOG in the final preseason game again Portland. “You could not ask for a better place to come play at. This locker-room has been amazing and we have so many great guys in here like Ben Slothlisberger and Adam Schnell. I really think we are primed for some big things this season.” Tijuana was getting ready to load up on the team plane for their trip to Dallas to get their season underway and the feeling around the club was quite positive as they began their quest to bring Ultimini number 8 back to Mexico.
The season did not really get off to a great start for Tijuana as they lost their opening game of the season 20-12 to the Birddogs in Dallas. The game seemed to always stay just out of the Luchadores reach and Bowie had a rather forgetful debut only posting 2 tackles on the night. Despite the slow start Tijuana was able to get back to winning ways back at home in Mexico when they defeated Portland 23-17. Bowie had a slight improvement on his Week 1 performance posting 5 tackles this game. The season was quite the roller-coaster ride for the Luchadores though as they just could never quite string a run of results together in order break into the playoff hunt. With one week to go in the season Tijuana find themselves eliminated from playoff contention.
Bowie’s rookie season has been somewhat successful as he has posted 73 tackles, 1 TFL, 1 Interception, and 3 PDs in 13 games so far this season. He has also had some stellar individual defensive performances receiving the Defensive Game-ball in Week 4 and Week 9. “It’s unfortunate to already know we won’t have a chance to defend our title this year, but that’s kind of the nature of the game down here in the DSFL.” Said a disappointed Bowie after their team watched Norfolk come back and defeat Myrtle Beach. “It sucks but I am still proud of the effort we put out there this season after losing as many guys as we did this offseason.” I feel bad for Sloth, Howlett, and Vequain. I know they had really high hopes for this season and I would have loved to get them another Ultimini before they get called up the ISFL. I also want to give Theeks a huge shoutout for his POY caliber season. The dude has been tearing it up this year and I think he really deserves the award. The man is a workhorse.”
“All that is really left for this season is to go out and end things on a high note and try to get back to .500. I know Tijuana is primed for big things next year and whether I am here or in the ISFL, I will definitely be doing everything I can to help them.” After Tijuana’s last game next week against Norfolk, Bowie will be getting prepared for the S24 ISFL Draft, and after a rookie season like he has had it is no overstatement to say that he has to be one of the hottest prospects in the coming draft class.
