***Titles and Phatahls “Just Doing Me” kicks in, slowly fading down to just be heard in the background as narrator comes in***
Narrator: We’re looking at an exciting episode tonight as there have been a fair few events that our good old pick number 77 L’Gazzy Burfict has been through. We left things last time with L’Gazzy preparing for a double header with Portland and Myrtle Beach before the game against the Dallas Birddogs – you’ll remember that this was one team he thought may have called his name on draft night. Performances have been mixed for L’Gazzy and the team, and he’s also found himself a few British favourites to add into his diet. Our main man BoBo Saxton will touch on all of this and more in tonight’s episode of L’Gazzy Burfict : Dare to Dream.
*** Tape cuts to BoBo Saxton looking a little flustered, checking his watch and a small scrap of paper outside a traditional looking English pub. He’s in his classic get-up of a tight tracksuit and sporting a L’Gazzy Burfict number 55 London Royals Cap. ***
BoBo Saxton: Huh, so here we are, in London England. That’s right, all the hype an interest in our main man means that BoBo here has been shipped on over to keep you all up to date with what L’Gazzy is getting up to. And speaking of which, here he comes now… a little late aren’t you L’Gazz…
*L’Gazzy Burfict comes into shot and meets BoBo Saxton at the door of the pub. He’s dressed in jeans and a London Royals sweater, big smile on his face as usual*
L’Gazzy Burfict: Hey BoBo, man, I’m sorry I’m a few mins late you know. Nice cap you got man! I got hung up on the London Underground, those maps are like spaghetti I always seem to get mixed up there unless i’m with a teammate there putting me straight. Let’s head inside to talk anyway, I put the word out to my agent and he’s booked us a table here. I’ve come here a few times, it ain’t all that bad, London style you feel me?
BoBo Saxton: Huh, well good to see you L’Gazzy. You know it would have been a hell of a lot easier if you had been Drafted by Dallas, you know how long the flights took me to get here? Plus the station didn’t even send me straight to London, I’ve been up in a town called New castle for a couple days, it’s quite something up there let me tell you, strange people! Anyway, so, when we last spoke back over in the US you were getting ready for the double header with Portland and Myrtle Beach, before hosting the match with Dallas. So look, things didn’t go quite to plan for you guys, what happened out there?
L’Gazzy Burfict: Well yeah, we started off with that bad patch with the double header. I dunno how to explain, we just seemed to misjudge the match ups that were on the table. For me personally, the Portland game wasn’t so bad – I mean, I hit seven tackles and for a rookie in the league I got to be happy with those numbers, right? Then we had that long flight over to Myrtle Beach and again, personally, I felt in the zone. I managed to rack up another seven tackles and hit my first sack of the season. I said I’d been working hard on my speed and it was sure the case with that play, if you all saw it, and that felt great BoBo.
BoBo Saxton: Huh, yeah don’t worry, we were all watching those games back home, rooting for you. It was good to see you getting on the field, making plays, even if the results didn’t go your way. But that must have built up some energy in the team right, because what came next was the…
L’Gazzy Burfict: Demolition of the Dallas Birddogs. Or maybe we should go with destruction? Whitewash? Whatever BoBo, but yeah, that was where we put it all out there, put on a crazy show not just for our fans but to send a message. The London Royals are still here, we still fighting, and this championship ain’t been won quite yet, you know. The game was a funny one for me, I wasn’t on the field so much just down to what the coach wanted to play, and I respect that. Couple tackles, you know. A sack, why not, I mean I think we got five on the field that day so I wanted to make sure I had my name on the sheet.
*L’Gazzy pauses for a moment as a waiter comes over to the table. He orders BoBo and himself a couple of plates a scotch eggs and French fries, plus a couple cups of English breakfast tea. BoBo looks a little deflated as he’d been eyeing up the specials board.*
BoBo Saxton: Huh, well I guess I’m having steak pie for dinner, these things better be good.
L’Gazzy Burfict: Oh they are, don’t you worry yourself about that man. So where were we?
BoBo Saxton: Huh, so next up was…
*BoBo glances down at his notepad*
BoBo Saxton: Huh, next up was that tip to Tijuana to play the Luchadores. A close one on paper and it looked like it could have gone either way there?
L’Gazzy Burfict: Yeah, that was a bit of a sucker to be honest with you BoBo. We were on a high after the Dallas game and fancied our chances down there, but it just didn’t play out that way. You look at the numbers, what the defence put up, what the QB put up, we had the numbers to totally win that one but that’s football sometimes, sometimes you don’t get the result you should have, you feel me. And that put a downer on the locker room, it just sucks to lose like that.
*A waiter arrives at the table, placing down the order. L’Gazzy has a big smile on his face and gestures for BoBo to dig in – BoBo gladly accepts the invitation and grabs hold of his first scotch egg*
BoBo Saxton: Huh, I don’t know what the hell these things are but damn they are good. Fair play L’Gazzy, you got good taste., oh yes.
L’Gazzy Burfict: Ha, well what do you expect BoBo, I ain’t gonna let you down man. I been finding my feet in the city since being here. You won’t find a better drink that Yorkshire Tea over here man. Crap, can I say that, we letting adverts on here. Hell, you all need to get to Yorkshire and check this stuff out, wherever that crazy ass place may be. Sound like some place in those old Lord of the Rings films with the funny looking folk.
BoBo Saxton: Huh, well you heard it here first. I’m not sure you’ll get many agreeing with you back home but it’s great that you’re embracing the things over here.
L’Gazzy Burfict: You know BoBo, that’s what it’s all about. I could have been drafted by a team in the good old US, and sure the cultures may have been a bit of a change up. But I know what I’m getting over there man, it ain’t all that different. I found that out from my time over in Rutgers. And I could always find one of my boys to hook me up, show me where to find some fine ass soul food. But over here, I said to myself – maybe it was actually my pops telling me so – but I got to embrace the culture, I got to make sure I show some love to the city, cos the fans showing me the love for being over here, I’m blessed with that. So yeah, I been trying some new things, going to some new joints. Some of the other guys, especially my man Tayshawn, they have been organising trips, get togethers, excursions, you know. So we been making our mark on the city, and this place been showing us what it got.
BoBo Saxton: Huh, and what have you enjoyed so far, or has anything been a disappointment for you?
*L’Gazzy takes a sip of his tea and smirks*
L’Gazzy Burfict: Well you know, there have been some interesting times with my man Crunk – he is one of these guys who knows people everywhere, or certainly makes you feel like he does. So we been getting about plenty places, seeing plenty sites, you know. But a disappointment? Hell, you know I found this joint which did an all you can eat breakfast, like five dollars or whatever. Damn that sounds good and all, but could I find any maple syrup, could I find any gravy? All I can say is if someone offers you some of Daddy’s brown sauce, you always say no. Ha, yeah, that was a low point, but most of the time the places I been, the people I’ve met, they been pretty cool, you know.
BoBo Saxton: Huh, so back to the football now. So you guys had lost the tight one with Tijuana, and then after that you had the game with Norfolk – and those guys were going so well. What did the coach say to you before the game?
L’Gazzy Burfict: Yeah well that one was an interesting one. We sat down with the coach pre game and he gave it to us straight. He told, nah, he reminded us how good we can be, how good we are, you know. The man gives the confidence, you just got to take that onto the field and hope that the ball goes your way, that the chains move in the right direction. For me personally, I got five tackles, you know that’s alright, nothing special. My man Juan, he terrorised the offence this game, three sacks baby. He’s been talking me through his mindset, sharing tips. He’s someone I look up to, a real been there done that Linebacker. Someone I’m honoured to be on the line beside. We came away with the victory in that one, pretty big margin but not to the same magnitude as Dallas, you feel me, ha. But yeah, it felt at the time like it was us putting our marker down.
BoBo Saxton: Huh, but then history repeated itself in the next match up with the Kansas City Coyotes didn’t it. Now I must say, for the neutral, this game would have had it all. But after taking the early lead it has to be disappointing for the way things went in the fourth quarter. Tell us a little more about that one if you can, I know you are still feeling a little raw.
L’Gazzy Burfict: Yeah well straight up, we should have won this game, no doubt. But I maybe put too much pressure on myself, gave myself too much expectation. I only came away with a couple tackles, I felt like I let myself down a little, but for sure let the team down. I should have been better, we should have been able to hold on to that lead. But that is how it goes sometimes, you feel me, that’s the way it goes.
BoBo Saxton: Huh, a very honest assessment. So look, you’ve had some time to reflect on that one and next up is the game against the Grey Ducks. You beat them on their own turf in week one – that feels a long while back right now – but tell us how you are preparing for this one. I know you won’t just be counting on history repeating itself cos we all know that’s not how football works.
L’Gazzy Burfict: So after the game against the Coyotes, I called my pops just to get my dead straight. Like I said, I felt like I had put too much in to the game, I wasn’t being myself out there. I know I want to embrace the culture over here, show the fans that I am feeling good about playing over here in London England, but maybe in doing that I’d lost a little bit of the real L’Gazzy Burfict. And pops being pops, he gave it to me straight. I respect him for that.
BoBo Saxton: Huh, well yes I know him well, quite a character. But honesty and respect, he lives for that.
L’Gazzy Burfict: Exactly, I knew he would set me on the right pat again. He said he had been watching me play and yeah, I was looking sluggish out there, my feet were looking lazy. I know how much time we spent together down at the track, working on my reaction times, working on my speed, I put a lot of work on that and it was what the scouts were all picking up on before the draft. So yeah, over the last few days I’ve been stripping L’Gazzy back to basics BoBo. I ain’t been playing the L’Gazzy way. Sure, some people might be happy with the numbers, but I know I can be better value for the team if I do my thing out there on the field. So I hit the track, I hit the gym, I been working on my speed…
BoBo Saxton: Huh, yeah I saw that you tweeted that your cleats fell apart during one session.
L’Gazzy Burfict: Yeah that was a bit unexpected, the sort of thing you see in the movies, you feel me! But yeah, luckily I spoke with my agent and he hooked me up with a new supplier over here, and I’m getting my head, my mindset, back in the right place. I’m faster than I have ever been, not just during my time here in London. So yeah, I’m looking forward to continuing in this direction. I can’t wait to get back out there on the field and remind all these great fans in London what the real L’Gazzy Burfict is all about!
BoBo Saxton: Huh, well I can’t wait to see that, and I’m sure all the folks back home can’t either. And especially for your pops Dion, he’ll be proud seeing you out there but also to see you being you, nothing more, nothing less.
L’Gazzy Burfict: Exactly BoBo, that’s what its all about and that’s what I will be doing moving forward. I’m a rookie, i’m going to make mistakes, that’s how it is. But as long as a learn from them, and don’t forget who I am, then I’ll be happy with that and I’m sure the fans will be too. So anyway, is there anything else you want to hit up or can we jump out of here, I want to show you a place Tayshawn took me too the other night, I think it’ll be just your thing.
BoBo Saxton: Huh, no sure, I’d like that. So that’s a wrap up for the latest episode folks. Next up for L’Gazzy is the double header – the games with Minnesota and then in Portland. Things have been a little up and down both for the London Royals and for our main man, but that is football like he said. I think we’ll all be watching with interest on how he can perform out there if what he is saying about his new found speed are true – I think i’ll also be keeping an eye on his new cleats, see if they can make it through the games! But anyway, it looks like we’re heading off now and so with that there is only one thing left for me to say. Take care, BoBo out.
