Hey, all Rich Triplet here
I wanted to go ahead and thank everyone who took the time to read my last article. It was long and this one will be as well just as a heads up to you all. In this one I want to continue my deep dives into the Tijuana Luchadores season by looking at week three, a game the Tijuana Luchadores lost in tough fashion. This game was lost by one possession and was plagued with turnovers. It was a dark time in the Tijuana locker room after the game but as you can tell by this point in the season, they have begun to turn it around for the better. The first game was against the Kansas City Coyotes. Without any delay let us dive into the Kansas City Coyotes game.
The Tijuana Luchadores at the Kansas City Coyotes
From the kickoff the game did not look great for the Tijuana Luchadores as they started with the ball at their own two-yard line. Luckily, they got some breathing room after a too many men on the field penalty with the Kansas City Coyotes having twelve players on defense, followed up with another penalty on the Kansas City Coyotes. A facemask calls on rookie Crozier McCoy pushed the Tijuana Luchadores up to the thirty-five-yard line. After a few completions from Mike Boss Jr. and a nice run by Crowbar Theeks, the Kansas City Coyotes once again shot themselves in the foot. Two penalties by Gary Goodman back to back, one for an unnecessary roughness call which was an automatic first down followed by an offsides call. This gave the Tijuana Luchadores almost twenty free yards and set up a nice play from Mike Boss Jr to Friedrich Vequain as he carried rookie cornerback Peter Patterson for twenty-four yards putting the Tijuana Luchadores at the Kansas City Coyotes three-yard line. Allowing Crowbar Theeks to run it up the middle for the first score of the game. A ninety-seven-yard drive that should have started as a safety turned in to six points and six minutes off the clock. As the Kansas City Coyotes took the ball, they started off strong with a nice eleven-yard rush by rookie running back King Tutankhamun. Unfortunately, penalties came back against the Kansas City Coyotes in full force with back to back illegal block below the waist calls on rookie Hank Antilles setting the Coyotes back an additional nineteen yards. These lead to the drive being stalled out and forcing a punt. Ultimately the Tijuana Luchadores did nothing with this opportunity and punted the ball away after a three and out, a nice return by Joshua Campbell of twenty-five yards would set up a Kansas City Coyotes touchdown drive. Starting at the Tijuana Luchadores thirty-one, the Kansas City Coyotes would have an easy time converting the return into six points. A nice rush by King Tutankhamun of nine yards followed later by a completion to Rigby Raccoon for fourteen yards would put the Kansas City Coyotes at the Tijuana Luchadores three-yard line. An easy completion to one of the best receivers in the DSFL in Joshua Campbell capped off the drive for the Kansas City Coyotes. With less than two minutes left in the first quarter the Tijuana Luchadores started with a huge play with an eighteen-yard rush from Crowbar Theeks. The drive ultimately went nowhere after that though with rookie safety Tony Yeboah, part of the TMNT, came in for a huge sack that lead to a seven-yard loss forcing the Tijuana Luchadores to punt.
Second Quarter Tijuana Luchadores 7 Kansas City Coyotes 7
The second quarter has both defenses making huge plays for both teams. The Kansas City Coyotes were able to convert one first down before being forced to punt while the Tijuana Luchadores were not able to convert anything on their first drive. The Kansas City Coyote’s second drive had a couple big plays in it, starting a with a huge sack from defensive player of the year candidate Adam Schell for an eleven-yard loss on second down. What looked to be an easy three and out for the Tijuana Luchadores defense turned into a first down conversion for the Kansas City Coyotes as safety NationalSimulation FootballLeague came in for a late hit getting an unnecessary roughness penalty called on him leading to an automatic first down. The drive still looked stopped after that until Joshua Campbell burned rookie cornerback Rich Triplet for a huge nineteen-yard gain. The drive was hit and miss with some big plays but ultimately the Tijuana Luchadores defense came to play breaking up two passes and forcing a punt. This punt would lead to another solid Tijuana Luchadore drive, racking up a nice forty six yards on the ground between Crowbar Theeks and Bronko Mills along with Mike Boss Jr slinging the rock to Doug Howlett for fourteen yards, rookie Mark Walker for sixteen yards and Friedrich Vequain for seven yards opened the Tijuana Luchadores offense up and allowed Crowbar Theeks to get a seven yard scamper for six. A well-orchestrated drive that allowed the Tijuana Luchadores to milk six minutes off the clock and put six points on the board. After an uninspiring drive from the Kansas City Coyotes with only converting on one first down in the four minute drive they were forced to punt the ball away with 1:37 left in the half and pinning the Tijuana Luchadores down on their own twelve they wanted to walk back to the locker room down seven. However, Bronko Mills had other ideas for the score board, as he took the rock up the gut breaking tackles left and right and rushing for eighty-eight yards and a touchdown allowing the Tijuana Luchadores to go up two scores before halftime.
Half time Tijuana Luchadores 21 Kansas City Coyotes 7
At this point in the half the Tijuana Luchadores were already busting out the tequila, absolutely dominating the competition on both sides of the ball the game looked to be wrapped up. Moving the ball on the ground wonderfully and the defense holding strong aside from a drive that started on their own thirty-one they looked to have this game wrapped up if they continued to play smart. However, the Kansas City Coyotes were showing why they would ultimately come back and win this game. Reginald Covington III would put things in his own hands as he had shown he could make big plays when needed most and has the clutch gene in his system.
The start of the third quarter started off right for the Kansas City Coyotes as their star receiver Joshua Campbell was ready to take this game back and defend the den. After bringing the ball out for a gain of thirty on the return Joshua Campbell immediately came back with a thirty-three-yard gain to put the Kansas City Coyotes deep into the Tijuana Luchadores territory. Another pass from Reginald Covington III to Taylor Cooper for ten yards had the Kansas City Coyotes. After a ballsy call on fourth and five converted by Sergio Kitchens on a running play. The Kansas City Coyotes took a too many men on the field penalty, not letting that get to them Reginald Covington III let a ball lose for Joshua Campbell that went for twenty nine yards before being brought down by Rich Triplet at the three yard line. King Tutankhamun punched it in, and the drive was over in five minutes. A well-executed drive that showed what Joshua Campbell and Reginald Covington III can do when they link up. After a Tijuana drive of twenty yards was stopped in its tracks by a nice pass break up by rookie cornerback Peter Patterson the Tijuana Luchadores were forced to punt the ball away. At the twelve-yard line your best option is to take the return, which is exactly what Joshua Campbell did, taking the ball eighty-eight yards to the house for a special teams score! The Tijuana Luchadores shaken up from having the game tied up after entering the half up two scores took to the field and got hit with an illegal formation penalty, nothing they couldn’t manage. Being so deep in their own territory the Tijuana Luchadores played it safe and after gaining eight yards were forced to punt again. Another huge play by the Kansas City Coyotes special teams as they got into the punt and wind up with a block by rookie Gary Goodman! While they didn’t get a return, they quickly converted it into points as Reginald Covington III found who else? Joshua Campbell for an eighteen-yard touchdown strike! Taking the lead in after being down fourteen in just ten minutes. Big plays by all three parts of football was huge for the Kansas City Coyotes in this quarter. The Tijuana Luchadores clearly shaken by this turn of events went three and out on their next drive, getting a decent punt off they pinned the Kansas City Coyotes down at their own nineteen-yard line. As Reginald Covington III Took to the field he was unable to get anything going, after two straight incompletions wanting to keep the momentum going Reginald Covington III tried to hit receiver Taylor Cooper to convert the third down but rookie cornerback Mason Gillion was waiting for it and with fresh arms and fresh legs intercepted the ball and took it fifteen yards to the Kansas City Coyotes twelve yard line. Setting up a perfect chance to score Crowbar Theeks did not disappoint as he got a nice twelve-yard scamper for a touchdown. Returning the scores back to even the Tijuana Luchadores were looking like they were back in business, forcing a nice three and out before taking over with two minutes left in the half. The drive didn’t look great for the Tijuana Luchadores only gaining one yard before looking at a third down, when Mike Boss Jr found Friedrich Vequain for a huge gain of twenty eight yards getting the Tijuana Luchadores into the Kansas City Coyotes territory right before the fourth quarter starts. However due to an illegal formation penalty what would have been a first down was called ultimately leading to a Tijuana Luchadores punt.
The fourth quarter started out with a nice three and out stop by the Tijuana Luchadores after Petra Sabor got in the backfield to sack Reginald Covington III for a six-yard loss. Despite a ten-yard gain on the next play to Rigby Racoon, the Kansas City Coyotes were forced to punt the ball. With the score tied up and the Tijuana Luchadores taking the field they knew they had to do two very important things, score six and milk time. Playing smash mouth football, the Tijuana Luchadores opened with a nice seven-yard run from Bronko Mills, after an incomplete pass Crowbar Theeks turned it up going for a nice fifteen-yard rush followed immediately by another conversion with a ten-yard run. Twenty-five yards in two plays is great for moving the football but took less than a minute off the clock. Crowbar Theeks slowed down a bit after this getting tackled for a short gain and when Mike Boss Jr looked for Crowbar Theeks on the dump off, the pass was broken up by linebacker Thomas Rose. With not much time the Tijuana Luchadores needed to keep the drive alive and Mike Boss Jr knew this as he looked for Doug Howlett and connected for a huge twenty-five-yard gain. Falling just short of the endzone Doug Howlett’s catch put the Tijuana Luchadores on the one-yard line, following two runs for no gain the Tijuana Luchadores were put in a sticky situation after a delay of game penalty put them back five more yards on third down. However, Mike Boss Jr was not going to settle for three points and found Friedrich Vequain for a nice completion putting the Tijuana Luchadores up with about nine minutes left in the game all the Tijuana Luchadores must do is hold onto the lead. The Kansas City Coyotes handed the football off to Sergio Kitchens who took it up eleven yards, not a great start for the Tijuana Luchadores defense but thanks to rookie lineman Felix Archstone getting a false start called on him the Kansas City Coyotes were put back five yards. After a four-yard gain by Sergio Kitchens, Reginald Covington III found Rigby Racoon for a huge twenty-four-yard gain and immediately after found Crayne Whebet in the slot for another ten. The Kansas City Coyotes were moving the football against a stout Tijuana Luchadores defense with ease. To milk some time and try to ensure the Tijuana Luchadores couldn’t make a play in case they tied the game up the Kansas City Coyotes switched to their run game with King Tutankhamun rushing for sixteen yards in two plays with a nice yard run by Sergio Kitchens in between those. On third and one on the Tijuana Luchadores sixteen, Reginald Covington III found Crayne Whebet again on the drive for a sixteen-yard gain putting the Kansas City Coyotes first and goal where Sergio Kitchens punched it in for the two-yard score. Tied up the Tijuana Luchadores took the field and after two incompletions Mike Boss Jr found tight end Jake Woodhead for a nice seventeen-yard gain to keep the drive alive. A questionable decision occurred as the Tijuana Luchadores decided to spike the ball instead of using any of their time outs, essentially wasting a down. On second down Mike Boss Jr tried to connect with Doug Howlett but was unable to hit him in stride. Third down Mike Boss Jr felt he needed to make a play and looked for running back Bronko Mills out of the backfield, but tragedy struck as the pass was intercepted by Mac Griddle! Placing the Kansas City Coyotes at the Tijuana Luchadores thirty-five-yard line, one first down could seal the game in their favor. Already in field goal range the Tijuana Luchadores defense needed to come up big and they did, burning all the Kansas City Coyotes’ time outs and not allowing a first down. The Kansas City Coyotes lined up for the kick, but Juke Thomason was unable to convert the forty-four-yard attempt as it sailed just right of the goal post. The Tijuana Luchadores lived for another chance at the victory but were unable to do much with one-minute remaining as they punted away with forty seconds left and brought the game into overtime.
Luckily for the Tijuana Luchadores they were awarded the ball to start overtime with. A nice return by NationalSimulation FootballLeague put the Tijuana Luchadores at their own thirty-two. After a two-yard run by Bronko Mills and an incompletion to Crowbar Theeks the Tijuana Luchadores were facing a huge third down. Mike Boss Jr again looked for his running back Bronko Mills out of the backfield due to pressure when safety Mac Griddle intercepted the ball again, this time returning it thirty-two yards and putting the Kansas City Coyotes on the Tijuana Luchadores four. A three-yard run from Sergio Kitchens lead to a pass from Reginald Covington III right back to the man for the touchdown and to end the game. A disappointing turn of events for the Tijuana Luchadores.
Final score Tijuana Luchadores: 35 Kansas City Coyotes: 41
This one was rough to watch live, entering the half it looked like the Tijuana Luchadores had complete control of this game. Being up two scores and controlling the ball well on the ground it looked like they could put it on cruise control. Despite converting on third downs at a better rate, gaining more total yards, more total first downs, committing less penalties and having five more minutes of possession the Tijuana Luchadores still lost this game because of two major reasons. They lost the turnover battle and they let up a huge special teams’ touchdown. Joshua Campbell and Reginald Covington III were on fire this game and could not be stopped. Joshua Campbell ended the day with five catches for one hundred and two yards and a touchdown, on top of an eighty-eight-yard punt return touch down. While Reginald Covington III threw for two hundred and twenty-two yards, four touchdowns and only one pick. The Kansas City Coyotes didn’t give up during this game, I respect that, and I respect them as a team. They were a tough battle and there was a reason they split the series with Tijuana.
I was planning on doing these for every two games and making them to cover the entirety of the season, unfortunately the motivation after covering the first three games has dried up for me and I don’t have the passion I did for covering the first two in this article. I am going to forgo the Minnesota Gray Ducks game from this article and may do a end of the season round up once the DSFL season ends and cover those games in less depth but still give some insights in how the Tijuana Luchadores played win or loss. Thank you to those who read these, and I may do them again someday.
