It’s late, it’s late for a very important update. I meant to post this during the offseason, but oh well.
This media article will provide an update on ISFL and DSFL scorigami to include all games played in S25. For each league, I list each game in which a unique final score pair was posted in S25. Next, I discuss trends in scorigami over time and revisit my hypothesis from the S24 offseason that the ISFL expansion would bring with it an increase in the number of scorigami. Finally, I discuss whether any of the new scorigami this season broke a league record based on total score, score differential, etc.
NEW SCORIGAMI IN SEASON 25
International Simulation Football League (ISFL)
Let’s begin with the ISFL!
With 118 games played in S25, there are now 1,694 regular season and playoff games completed in the ISFL. We can visualize the final scores from all of these games in ISFL history using the chart below. The chart is organized with winning team score along the top (horizontal) axis and the losing team score along the right (vertical axis). Scores marked in grey are impossible while those marked in white have not yet occurred. Scores marked in green have occurred, with the darkness of the color indicating the number of times the score pair has occurred in ISFL / NFL history. We see that 27-24 is now the clear front-runner in terms of most common score (having occurred 25 times; +3 since S24). This is followed by 20-17 (22 times; +1 since S24) and 30-24 (20 times; +2 since S24).
Out of these 1,694 games played in the ISFL / NSFL, 600 have ended in unique score pairs, with S25 contributing 14 new scorigami (see the bright yellow tiles in the chart below):
Developmental Simulation Football League (DSFL)
Next let’s consider the DSFL!
With 59 games played in S25, there are now 1,105 regular season and playoff games in the books for the DSFL. We can visualize the final scores from all of the games in league history in the chart below, with the darkness of the color indicating the number of times the score pair has occurred. In the DSFL, 24-17 is the most common score (having occurred 15 times; no new occurrences in S25), now more closely followed by 20-17 and 24-7 (which have each occurred 14 times since S25 added 3 more occurrences of 20-17 and 1 additional occurrence of 24-7).
Out of these 1,105 games played in the DSFL, 399 have ended in unique score pairs. S25 contributing 7 new scorigami (see the bright yellow tiles in the chart below):
1. Week 1: POR 21 – NOR 0 (home)
2. Week 2: LON 31 – TIJ 12 (home)
3. Week 3: POR 14 – KC 12 (away)
4. Week 10: MIN 48 – MB 10 (home)
5. Week 13: MB 32 – NOR 10 (away)
6. Week 14: MB 44 – TIJ 9 (home)
7. Ultimini: TIJ 42 – LON 16 (away)
SCORIGAMI OVER TIME
Did the S25 Expansion Mean More Crazy Scores in the ISFL?!
During the S24 postseason, I considered the trend in scorigami over time and predicted that the S25 expansion (with the addition of the New York Silverbacks and the Berlin Fire Salamanders) might increase the entropy in the system and lead to a jump in the number of scorigami. While we do see a bump in the number of scorigami this season compared to S24 (top panel of the chart below), if we account for the fact that more teams mean more games played in the season we see only a small increase in the number of scorigami (bottom panel). As the league matures, we expect it to get harder and harder to realize new score pairs. This may be one of the reasons why the expansion teams did not shake things up as much as I might have hoped.
In the DSFL, we saw a much lower number and proportion of games ending in scorigami than last season, but the dip is well within the variation seen in recent seasons since the S21 expansion (see chart below).
SCORIGAMI RECORDS UPDATE
While there has been some great scorigami added to the books this past season in both the ISFL and DSFL, only one of them has displaced a league’s most notable scorigami of all time. No record-setting unique scores were posted in the ISFL, while one game entered the DSFL’s most notable scorigami of all time.
Most recent Ultimini scorigami: It’s always extra exciting when scorigami happens during the final title battle of the playoffs and Season 25 saw this happen for the first time since Season 15 (when the Solar Bears beat the Pythons 37 to 17). The Tijuana Luchadores’ title win against the London Royals, 42-16, enters the record books as the most recent Ultimini scorigami.
ISFL AND DSFL COMBINED SCORIGAMI
We will finish this article with a combined scorigami chart for both the ISFL and DSFL leagues. Across both leagues, we have seen 682 unique final score pairs. Of these, 316 have occurred in both leagues (dark green cells), 283 have occurred in the ISFL but not the DSFL (light green cells), and 83 have occurred only in the DSFL (purple cells). S25 saw two additional DSFL scorigami that have never occurred in the ISFL and nine additional ISFL scorigami that have never occurred in the DSFL.
