ISFL Season 28 Game Breakdowns - Austin Copperheads – Defensive Tackle - Owen Isaac
Week 1 we travel to the Baltimore Hawks, we met Baltimore in the pre- season and managed to get a nice victory, built upon a big 4th quarter return. These 2 teams were the bottom sides of their prospective divisions last season, and both would be looking to get off to a strong start this season.
Pre match interview with Defensive Tackle Owen Isaac
Interviewer: So, the new season is about to begin first week up is a game against the Baltimore Hawks, what do you hope to get out of the game and on a personal point what is your goals for the game?
Owen Isaac: Look it is great to get going, we had a few issues in the pre-season, too many penalties and not a great 3rd down conversion rate, but we got a win over these guys, so was good to get an early look at them, they have also had an early look at us, hopefully we can make it count a bit more than they do. My goal going into any game is the same, I need some dominant impacts, be it tackles for losses, sacks or forced fumbles, I want to feel involved and that I am contributing, we have some really strong defensive players in our front 7, I need to show I belong and deserve to be here.
Interviewer: Thanks for answering the questions today
Week 1 – @ Baltimore Hawks
Baltimore started the game receiving the kick-off, we start off on defence, need to prevent a score here if we can. Baltimore manages to get lots of short gains on a 5.20 minute drive but we hold them to a field goal, so hopefully now our offence can take advantage and put us in the lead.
Daytona manages to find the receivers early and often, and Zoe Watts manages to find some good holes in the Defensive line, leading us down for a Daytona’s passing touchdown to Vequain. Great start to the game we hold them to a field goal and then go down for a touchdown. The defence comes out knowing we can try to give an advantage to our side here if we can get a good stop we can try and take a good advantage. Thanks to a couple of Baltimore penalties ion the drive we force a punt and put the ball back in the hands of our quarterback Daytona. A couple of first downs and with last play of the quarter Daytona launches a bomb for Vidal-San to take 53 yards for a touchdown. Great start to the game up 14 -3 at the end of the 1st quarter.
2nd quarter begins with a 4-minute Baltimore drive that we manage to stop and hold them to a punt. A great punt pins us to our 1-yard line, and on the 2nd and 7, Daytona is forced into a fumble from the Hawks, Slayer, giving them great field [position which they score a rushing touchdown of the 2nd down. We must be careful here not to let them get back into this. We have a 4-minute drive where we push towards the halfway line, but this is a struggle with 2 penalties on us, the penalty issues appear to not have gone anywhere yet. And we setup for the Punt, BLOCKED, o man our last 2 plays have given them some great field position. Thankfully, I managed to get a tackle for loss on the 1st play and then ion the 3rd and 4, Bowie manages to make a great break up of a pass to hold them to another field goal. This keeps us in the lead, but we are a little rattled now, the offense needs a good drive for that bit of confidence. Daytona and Watts manage to find a good rhythm here and drive us down for a Watts rushing touchdown. Phew we really needed this, got to keep control of the game. Now we need to keep them out again to end the half. Skywalker drives the Hawks down the field, a huge moment and sack from Claxton in a 2nd and 1 situation keeps them from throwing for the endzone and forces another field goal attempt and gives us a nice 21-16 lead at the half.
We start the half receiving the kick, hopefully we can make it count. 2nd play of the half, Daytona is picked off and once again we have handed great field position to the Hawks, who score a touchdown and then complete a 2 pointer to give them a 21-24 lead. The next drive is a struggle 4 minutes, a couple of penalties again, Slayer manages to get a sack on Daytona again, we need to stop them getting through. We are forced into a punt and for the first time really are on the back foot. Some good tackling from Montain and Thomaslacher we again force the punt so hopefully we can now get back into this. Daytona is Sacked again, this is too often now this forces us into a punt…. It is BLOCKED again, how!!!! 2nd time of the game the hawks can get through to the punter and block. Once again, they get good field position. Skywalker shreds us and they rush in for a touchdown and a 21-31 lead.
This is real backs to the wall stuff now we should have had control of this game but now have a 10-point deficit, thanks to errors on our part. We need something!!! Big 3rd and 7 play on our own 15-yard line, huge moment Daytona throws a frickin bomb to Videl-San again, this time for an 84 yards touchdown. LET’S GO!!!!! Just what we needed. We force the hawks into a punt, and we give the ball back to Daytona to go out and make a the difference. A great 5 minute drive Daytona finds 4 different receivers, before Zoe Watts can rush over the line and give us back a lead, 35-31. Man what a game!
With 10 minutes left of the 4th quarter we have a lead and we need to hold it. We hold solid on first Hawks drive and they go for it on 4th down. They need just 2 yards, but not today Egghands gets himself in and stuffs the rusher shorter. Fantastic play. Neither team can get going again here, a little nervous maybe or rust at opening game of the season. 3 minutes left on the clock and Skywalker manages a huge 60 yard throw for great field position which leads to a touchdown.
So 1 minute 47 on the clock, 35-38 deficit, big drive coming here. A huge 3rd down completion on the drive keeps us rolling, we get into field goal range and tie the game up. Overtime it is then. We receive the ball to start, and drive down the field, sadly we settle for a field goal, and its over to us on defence we have to keep them out or we lose. And again on a 4th and down passing play, Bowie comes up and breaks up the pass to give us a win.
Post match interviews
Interviewer: I’m here with a few of the Austin Copperheads players after that dramatic game. First question is to you Owen, maybe not quite the game you wanted personally but you come away with the win, what are your thoughts immediately following the game?
Owen Isaac: Man I am gassed here, this was a tough game, yeah I didn’t quite get the numbers I would have liked but look we gave them, some really good field positions and they took advantage of it. We should have won this in regulation today but they would not go away and we had to fight back to get to OT in the end. Big props to Daytona and Watts they kept us going, those 2 bombs from Daytona, even after getting a few too many hits today.
Interviewer: Well let me call Jackie Daytona in, How are you feeling you took quite a few hits today? But you managed to come up with some big plays at key moments today your link with Vidal-San today led to 2 huge Touchdown moments, how do you feel about your relationship with the receivers? How did you feel your game went today after taking the Offensive Player of the Game?
Jackie Daytona: I shall of course be flagellating my OL later for their indiscretions in today’s game allow me to be manhandled so disrespectfully. I have an excellent relationship with my boys and girls in the receiver group we get closer with every game, I am like a father to them all. I felt my game went well today with 3 touchdowns and the 84-yard touchdown was a sight to behold if I do say so myself. The 2 turnovers inside our own 5 were not ideal but it is best to get them out my system now in a winning game like this was.
Interviewer: So a quick question from the coach now, 1 game down and 1 win, you started this way last season before things went a little wrong, what makes this year different?
Coach: Well, we made a lot of personnel changes. We put veteran defensive lineman Tyler Montain on a crash diet and new workout regimen to get him ready to play linebacker for us this year. We also moved veteran corner Ben Alexander-Arnold to the offensive side of the ball where he'll take some carries and help keep Daytona clean. We brought in long time defensive standout Hamish MacAndrew from Chicago to shore up our DB corps after moving Maverick Bowie to Corner. We also brought up Candice D. Fitinyomouf to take some snaps on the defensive line in place of Montain. Add these changes into the new personnel we obtained last trade deadline in Felix Archstone and Tony Yeboah and you have a completely reworked team that is firing on all cylinders. Couple this with an all-star set of weapons on the offensive side of the ball and a quarterback with more experience and you should see the Copperheads being much more competitive this year.
Interviewer: Well that’s Game week 1 down for the Austin Copperheads, they began with an Overtime win against the Baltimore Hawks, next up they visit the Arizona Outlaws. Same time next week.
