Alright, my second attempt at an ISFL mock draft. They say that you learn from failure, and if that’s the case then there should be some serious improvement this season, because last season was pretty awful compared to actual results. I didn’t think it was possible for all those quarterbacks to go in the first round, and they all pretty much vanished in the first couple picks.
This season, I adjusted my methodology a bit by assessing each team by position and general age of players. I then tried to grade the criticality of each position to derive a “top 3 needs” for each team. Not all needs are created equal, and some teams have multiple significant holes, where they could pick almost anyone and improve the team, other teams are so solid with young talent that anyone they pick is gravy. Most teams are somewhere in between, with 1-2 really notable improvement spots.
Notable observations during this exercise
WRs/LBs how many players in these positions makes a team "healthy"? It seems like good team have a very active pipeline at these positions, and I can't tell if that's necessary or a reflection of what players are creating. Looks like you really need 2 of each as a bare minimum, and optimally you have ~4 at each position, all different ages to ladder players through their careers.
Defensive Tackles remain sparse, and I get they are less important than a good Defensive End, but I thought more people would be playing them. Not sure if this would drive teams to take a needed position at the expense of a much higher TPE player that isn't necessarily needed.
I’m surprised by how few high earning tight ends there are in the league, and we’ve got a group of 4 TEs in this draft all sitting around 145-164 TPE. I’ll be very interested to see where they go. I’m assuming most will be in the third round, but I think I’ll learn more from watching these picks than the 200+ TPE ones.
But enough of my ramblings, onward to another season of learning!
ROUND 1
Pick 1.01 Austin Copperheads
Austin Needs: DT, RB, TE
Mock Pick: DE Aidan Hutchinson Jr. - @SchwarzNarr of the Minnesota Grey Ducks
Austin is first up in this draft, and they need a lot of help in multiple positions, but most notably they need defensive help, and will need to look on that side of the ball with the first pick. They have several options available at defensive end and linebacker, and decide to support their line with the first pick. SchwarzNarr is a solid user, high earner, and fills the team’s needs here. Other major options are to go with another end like Sledge Hammer, or one of the many solid linebackers in this draft like Caleb Hayden. It’s hard to make a bad decision with this much defensive talent at the top of the class.
Pick 1.02 Colorado Yeti
Colorado Needs: LB, WR, DT
Mock Pick: LB Caleb Hayden - @Caleb_H of the Kansas City Coyotes
Colorado is up next, and they are in need of lineman on both sides of the ball and could probably use another linebacker. Given the great LB pool available, the Yeti select Caleb Hayden, a promising new user and high earning speed rusher from the Kansas City Coyotes. I think they may also consider players like Sledge Hammer and Cruella de Ville at this spot.
Pick 1.03 New York Silverbacks
New York Needs: DE, DT, OL
Mock Pick: DE Sledge Hammer - @H0PPY75 of the Dallas Birddogs
The New York Silverbacks select Sledge Hammer, a high earning and active defensive end. H0PPY is a reliable user that will ensure the team gets what it needs here, which is help on the defensive line. They also take the last top defensive end off the board, as the position looks like it will be in high demand in this draft.
Pick 1.04 San Jose Sabrecats
San Jose Needs: RB, LB, K/P
Mock Pick: LB Cruella de Ville - @Exilizer of the London Royals
San Jose has several needs, and I judged their largest need at running back, to replace their aging starters. But there aren’t many RB options at this point in the draft, and the Cats go with a linebacker here, starting the draft with 4 straight defensive players. Here they select Cruella de Ville, another active recreate that will set the team’s backer needs for the foreseeable future.
Pick 1.05 Orange County Otters
Orange County Needs: S, LB, QB
Mock Pick: LB Tank McGibbons - @MikeWhiskey of the Dallas Birddogs
The Orange County Otters need a linebacker and a safety in this draft, and with both the 5th and 8th picks in this draft, will probably the number six selection on a linebacker to snatch up a rapidly shrinking pool of top earners. The Otters select Tank McGibbons, a promising new user looking to lead the defense on his future ISFL team.
Pick 1.06 Berlin Salamanders
Berlin Needs: DE, OL, CB
Mock Pick: OL Walrus Jones - @caravaggio of the Minnesota Grey Ducks
Berlin is a team with needs at almost every position, and the upside is that they can look at best value to fill one of their many holes. They would probably pick a defensive end if they could here, but the top guys are likely off the board at this point. The Salamanders select Walrus Jones, the top earner, to anchor their offensive line and provide some protection to their young quarterback. Walrus is a new user that has been pretty active and with decent league income. He also enjoys lurking on Discord and writing mock drafts. What an awesome guy that Berlin snags here! A+
Pick 1.07 Baltimore Hawks
Baltimore Needs: RB, WR, DT
Mock Pick: WR Jeff Newman - @Lumosityfan of the London Royals
Baltimore is up next and is probably looking for running backs and wide receiver options, with an outside chance of working on their offensive line. The Hawks decide the best value is to go wide receiver, and select Jeff Newman to anchor their air raid for the future. Lumosityfan is a new user with a solid sim league pedigree that ensures he’ll help the team grow and compete in future seasons.
Pick 1.08 Orange County Otters (from )
Orange County Needs: S, LB, QB
Mock Pick: S Diggs Sideline-touchdown - @Dewalt27 of the Minnesota Grey Ducks
Orange County is up again after trading away a bucket of picks to double dip into this great draft class. As mentioned earlier, their big needs are linebacker and safety, and with the LB taken, they set their sights on the secondary. The Otters select Diggs Sideline-touchdown, a ball hawk safety from the Minnesota Grey Ducks. With this pick, they have tapped most of their biggest needs and can hunt for best value as we go onward (which is great since they don’t have a second rounder this draft).
Pick 1.09 New Orleans Secondline
New Orleans Needs: OL, QB, DE
Mock Pick: OL Remi Musgrave-Smythe - @37thchamber of the Tijuana Luchadores
New Orleans goes right to their biggest need and selects Remi Musgrave-Smythe, an offensive lineman that love to overpower his enemies, open up the lanes, and even keep his quarterback safe. New Orleans doesn’t really have many weaknesses among their younger players, and offensive lineman feels like a great selection for them to progress towards more playoff opportunities.
Pick 1.10 Chicago Butchers
Chicago Needs: LB, CB, TE
Mock Pick: LB Zavier Perkins - @AK41 of the Bondi Beach Buccaneers
Chicago needs a lot of help on defense, and it’s a no brainer to snatch up the last of the big fish linebackers on the board, Zavier Perkins. AK41 is a new users with a solid sim history, and does a lot of graphics work to ensure their always max earning. Chicago gets the future defensive captain they need to stay competitive once their current veterans start retiring.
Pick 1.11 Honolulu Hahalua
Honolulu Needs: S, DT, K/P
Mock Pick: K/P Booter McGavin - @ajtigger of the Dallas Birddogs
Honolulu is flush with young talent in most of the big categories, and has a lot of good options here. Do they shore up the offensive line? Take a kicker in the first round? Go for best value? Their biggest help could come from the tight end, defensive tackle, or kicker positions, and looking at the pool of draftees, they lock in on a kicker. Booter McGavin earns that big kick energy by getting the first round call!
Pick 1.12 Yellowknife Wraiths
Yellowknife Needs: WR, QB, DE
Mock Pick: WR Shane Turnbull - @Symmetrik of the Dallas Birddogs
Yellowknife needs very little, they have a fantastic base of young players to grow. In fact, I had to go back and really think about what their 3 biggest needs would be. Given how this draft has unfolded, the Wraiths get to pick one of the elite wide receivers on the board, and decide that Shane Turnbull fits their scheme and locker room best.
Pick 1.13 Sarasota Sailfish
Sarasota Needs: WR, LB, OL
Mock Pick: LB Brian Duke - @AlbanianValor of the Kansas City Coyotes
Now for the big dogs of the year, the conference champions! Sarasota picks first, and they have the luxury of planning for the future with no immediate holes. The Sailfish go for a wide receiver, because I hear you can never have too many of them! Brian Duke, come on down, you just won a Sailfish jersey and a handshake from the commissioner!
Pick 1.14 Arizona Outlaws
Arizona Needs: DE, RB, S
Mock Pick: RB Aiden Frost - @LANEFROST of the Dallas Birddogs
And for the final pick of the first round, the Arizona Outlaws have a buffet of great players to choose from, and very few immediate needs. They decide to pick up the old vet and select Aiden Frost. Their running back corps could be improved a bit, and the idea of having a guy named Frost in Arizona is too funny to pass up.
ROUND 2
More picks, less explanation, because let’s face it, this deep into the draft I’m probably way off the mark.
Pick 2.01 Austin Copperheads
Austin Needs: DT, RB, TE
Mock Pick: DT Carly Rae Jensen - @unconfident of the London Royals
First of three mandated picks of the round, the Copperheads get the tough line anchor they need on defense.
Pick 2.02 Colorado Yeti
Colorado Needs: LB, WR, DT
Mock Pick: WR Johnny Blaze Jr - @JBLAZE_THE_BOSS of the Kansas City Coyotes
Colorado needs help at wide receiver, and in the exact same dynamic that sends Frost to Arizona, I like Blaze going to Colorado. It just fits.
Pick 2.03 New York Silverbacks
New York Needs: DE, DT, OL
Mock Pick: LB Bridge Burner - @BOOM™ of the Dallas Birddogs
New York still needs help at defense, and Burner would help shore them up at linebacker, and possibly near the line of scrimmage.
Pick 2.04 San Jose Sabrecats
San Jose Needs: RB, LB, K/P
Mock Pick: RB Armor Queen - @Starboy of the Bondi Beach Buccaneers
San Jose still really needs help at running back, and they go after the best RB on the board. Armor Queen is a long time member that should help out the San Jose offense.
Pick 2.05 Philadelphia Liberty (from )
Philadelphia Needs: DE, OL, QB
Mock Pick: QB Gore Done Ram Say - @deadlunatic of the Tijuana Luchadores
As the one team to sit out the first round, I’ll go a little more in depth here. Philly has a really good young base of players, and trading down this year is a good move for them overall. Their team needs are slight, and they can afford to pick for value in the second round. They need the most help on the line of scrimmage and maybe QB, and I’ve got them selecting a quarterback here, which had a glut of players last season but this draft is a pretty rare position.
Pick 2.06 Berlin Salamanders
Berlin Needs: DE, OL, CB
Mock Pick: CB Casino Robin - @Big Newff of the Portland Pythons
A bunch of decent options for Berlin here, and they decide to shore up the secondary with Robin. I could also see them testing out a wide receiver or even a tight end here.
Pick 2.07 Baltimore Hawks
Baltimore Needs: RB, WR, DT
Mock Pick: WR Teenie Hodges - @Billybolo53 of the Norfolk SeaWolves
In the real draft, I don’t think Hodges will drop this low, but if he does, it’s a perfect fit for Berlin. It fits team needs well, and he’d be a great value at this pick.
Pick 2.08 Philadelphia Liberty
Philadelphia Needs: DE, OL, QB
Mock Pick: OL Fortified Fridge - @BaconBrother of the London Royals
Philly picks up a nice active offensive lineman here to help with their cap space as their younger players mature. Good fit for the team overall.
Pick 2.09 New Orleans Secondline
New Orleans Needs: OL, QB, DE
Mock Pick: LB GOAT TANNK - @Eldorian of the Bondi Beach Buccaneers
New Orleans goes for value here and draft a great longstanding user to support their team. And at linebacker, TANNK provides a ton of flexibility to the team’s plans.
Pick 2.10 Chicago Butchers
Chicago Needs: LB, CB, TE
Mock Pick: OL Painted Penguin - @Painted of the Minnesota Grey Ducks
Another GM pick, Butchers get some help at OL which is always appreciated.
Pick 2.11 Honolulu Hahalua
Honolulu Needs: S, DT, K/P
Mock Pick: DT Jack Hammer - @NamelessNate of the Dallas Birddogs
Honolulu goes for positional need here, and selects an established user to help them on the defensive line.
Pick 2.12 Yellowknife Wraiths
Yellowknife Needs: WR, QB, DE
Mock Pick: WR Really Creative-Name - @Cincyfan96 of the Tijuana Luchadores
Yellowknife sees Creative-Name still on the board and realizes the only better pick than a wide receiver is two wide receivers. They do not hesitate to build up the corps.
Pick 2.13 Sarasota Sailfish
Sarasota Needs: WR, LB, OL
Mock Pick: CB Jimmy Jeeta - @QuirkyTurtle of the Dallas Birddogs
With a linebacker already selected in the first round, Sarasota will look for offensive linemen and wide receivers to round out the team. Jeeta is here and so is Fortified Fridge, but I have them taking Jeeta if he's available.
Pick 2.14 Arizona Outlaws
Arizona Needs: DE, RB, S
Mock Pick: RB Sherwin Blue Jr. - @Kotasa of the Kansas City Coyotes
The second GM pick of the round, and Arizona gets their running back of the future.
The New York Silverbacks select Sledge Hammer, a high earning and active defensive end. H0PPY is a reliable user that will ensure the team gets what it needs here, which is help on the defensive line.
