After weeks and weeks of hype we finally got to see our players in action on the DSFL stage. Here are my power rankings after Week 1 of DSFL S40.
(Disclaimer: These are subjective and will be biased! Feel free to comment if you disagree.)
1. Tijuana Luchadores(1-0)
The Luchadores struggled to get the run game going early on, but everything changed after Gucci Gurley’s 37 yard run. Run after run, pass after pass…the offense was simply firing on all cylinders, scoring 6 touchdowns. It’s clear that the Luchadores have the best RB room in the league. Rookies Benji Aguilera, Ezra Azazel, Logjammed McBobface, Synystr Gates all showed up big time. The secondary was dominant. I really have nothing negative to say about this performance. It’ll be interesting if they can keep up this level of play for the rest of the season.
2. London Royals
The London Royals started S40 with a bang after a disappointing season by coming out on top after a shootout with the reigning champs. The Royals offense stretched the field vertically early on with a 79 yard touchdown. After that running was a cakewalk for Lord Farquaads, the only running back on the roster. Quarterback Willer Miller turned in a masterful performance, carving the defense for 8 yard chunks with great accuracy while leading a high tempo offense. The defense was less effective in the second half, but this is to be expected considering the number of rookies on that side of the ball. This victory was mostly on the backs of great performances from the veterans(Aforementioned Lord Farquaads, Willer Miller and Lenny Lyons Jr), and if the rookies become fully integrated into the system and realize their potential, this team could be even better. Bang Bang Lion Gang!
3. Norfolk Seawolves(1-0)
The Seawolves came into this game looking to win, and that’s exactly what they did. After shaking off the jitters in the first quarter, the Seawolves fired back with 2 touchdowns in the second quarter-and just like that, the lead was down to 6. During the 2 drives, you could see the chemistry between Legs McMillion and Rocky Franklin III. They looked like they’ve been playing with each other for seasons. It was smooth sailing for both the offense and the defense in the second half. Contributions from rookies Sean Robinson and Legs McMillion only opened up more chances for star tight end Big McLarge Huge to wreck havoc. Their great front 7 anchored by Kenny McCormick really turned it up as the game went on. It’s clear that the Seawolves have a winner’s mentality. It’s not easy to come back down by 20.
4. Portland Pythons (1-0)
After the departure of Matt Jones and Plant Based, the Portland Pythons have been looking for someone to fill their shoes. It looks like they might have found that someone after just one game. Portland Pythons were able to turn great defense into offense by converting a great field position into an easy touchdown early on. They showed that they had confidence in their offense by going for a 4th&6(!!!) in the first quarter. And they really should, considering the number of dynamic playmakers they have(Tyler One, Malcolm Grimes, among others). Fueled by their high octane offense, the Pythons were able to trade touchdowns all game. The defense showed up when it mattered, killing the momentum for the Grey Ducks comeback with sack after sack.
5. Kansas City Coyotes (0-1)
After winning the championship last season, the departure of key players was inevitable, including Creg Jerrith IV and Alex Armstrong. Regardless, the Coyotes showed that they were still a formidable team. Their defense and pass protection will have to improve if they want to seriously contend. The Coyotes really turned up in the second half and they got very close to winning-but ultimately fell short. I’m guessing that a locker room full of established, title winning vets helped with that. Also, keep an eye on quarterback Jake Jefferson. His role is limited for now, but he could be something special.
6. Minnesota Grey Ducks (0-1)
The story is mostly the same for the Minnesota Grey Ducks and the Portland Pythons. A high powered offense and a relatively quiet defense. The only difference between the two teams is that the Minnesota Grey Ducks defense never found their groove while the Pythons defense did. Their offense was great to watch. They featured an offense utilizing their promising receiver room full of YAC threats with everyone getting targets. Florida Man showed true WR1 potential, exploding for 144 yards. If their defense can step up, the Grey Ducks can go very far.
7. Bondi Beach Buccaneers(0-1)
The Bondi Beach Buccaneers were the worst team in the league last season and were hoping to change that in Season 40. The first game of the season was a loss, but there are plenty of positives to talk about. The Buccs established the run early on to great success. They were able to leverage this into a fantastic first quarter going up 17 points while shutting down the Seawolves offense. They targeted Quandale Dingle’s side of the field constantly for easy completions. First overall pick Mary Marie made an instant impact on her debut with an interception. Unfortunately, the Buccaneers failed to keep up the intensity for the rest of the game. The offense fizzled out, scoring a field goal in the second quarter and going scoreless in the second half. They simply could not move the ball up the field, and the defensive line had a hard time getting past the Seawolves offense line. While the game ended on a sour note, I truly believe Bondi Beach Buccaneers can turn it around based on their first quarter performance alone.
8. Dallas Birddogs(0-1)
The loss of key players(Liv Elsathelookout, Notso Smart among others) was sorely felt for the Dallas Birddogs. Things started pretty well, forcing a three-and-out on the very first drive. After that, it became a nightmare for Birddogs fans. They couldn’t stop the short passing game and struggled to plug the gaps. They couldn’t get anything going on offense. Their first and only touchdown came with a minute and 40 seconds left in the fourth quarter. They were plagued by drops and incompletions-leading to a whopping 47.4% completion percentage. However, the fourth quarter touchdown drive was pretty impressive, marching down the field at will. The Birddogs need to show more of that if they want to stay competitive. Don't worry, Birddogs fans. Things can only go up from here.
