To clarify the subtitle, at this point changing your player's name to a Hawaiian name is no longer original and leads to me needing to constantly check and double check that I'm spelling it correctly. You don't want to know how many times I needed to check how to spell Alex LongLastName's name for the Orange County article.
That aside, Honolulu is the second newest ASFC team, part of the S22 expansion along with the Sarasota Sailfish. Their history, as such, is much less than any team I've covered besides the Silverbacks. How exactly have they performed?
The Honolulu Hahalua during this period had a 59-81-1 record, for a 42.1% win rate. This is only one percent below the Sabercats, but is still the worst that I've covered so far for this time period. S27 just seems like such a massive outlier during the decade, and it ended in a playoff loss despite the home field advantage from the first seed. All that being said, this just feels like an expansion franchise who got stuck in the mud from the beginning. Like the Browns, except nowhere near as awful. The ratio of 10 win seasons to 10 loss seasons really needs to turn around in the second half, though.
S32: 9-7 (Big Slammu wins DPOY)
S33: 7-9
S34: 11-5 (1-1 in Playoffs, 2nd Ultimus berth)
S35: 13-3 (Xavier Walls wins DPOY) (2-0 in Playoffs, 3rd Ultimus berth and 2nd win)
S36: 11-5 (Big Slammu wins DPOY) (2-0 in Playoffs, 4th Ultimus berth and 3rd win)
S37: 9-7 (1-1 in Playoffs)
S38: 0-16
S39: 3-13
S40: 5-11
The Honolulu Hahalua's record for this decade was 77-83, for a 48.1% win rate. It's almost impressive that they ended up under .500 at the end of the decade considering they needed 11 total wins to reach .500 going into S38. Still, it's impossible not to call this decade a success even with the rebuild they had to endure in the last third of the decade. Built on a stable of DPOY winning defenders, the Hahalua went to 4 Ultimus, tied for the most over this decade, won 3, also tied for the most, and had a playoff record of 9-2. This also gives them what I'm extremely confident is the best percentage of playoff trips to win Ultimus. Really, that's the impressive thing; the Hahalua went to the playoffs 5 times over the decade and they won at least one game every single time. They got to the Ultimus every time but S37. All that really ended up happening was the piper coming to get paid after that almost dynastic stretch, and exacting an extremely harsh toll.
Up until that stretch, I'd call the Hahalua not just successful, but the team of the decade. They did, however, get overtaken in the end.
The Hahalua are a team that simultaneously feel good, bad, legendary, overshadowed, and everything in between all at once. That All Time Record is a hair under the Silverbacks, but notably better than the Sabercats or Second Line. That Playoff Berth percent is the second worst that I've looked at so far. The 2 Hall of Famers they have are as many as I'd attribute to the Silverbacks, a team with 3 years less history and half the Ultimus appearances.
Oh yeah, and they've won the Ultimus every other year they've been in the playoffs. Unlike the Sabercats, though, at most one feels fluky; the 9-7 S31 team winning it all is somewhat comparable to the Sabercats escapades in S24 and S25, but from S34 through S36, the Hahalua were legitimately a powerhouse led by players who are probably getting into the Hall but just haven't yet, like Big Slammu, Dexter Zaylren, and maybe some others as well. I call teams dynasties if they get 3 titles in 5 seasons, so this version of the Hahalua barely miss out on that title, but if you have a less stringent definition of dynasty in any way then the Honolulu Hahalua have one in the S31-S37 time period.
The funny thing is that I generally don't think of the Hahalua as a strong team; part of this might be coming in during S24/S25, where the Hahalua were a mediocre at best team with no accomplishments, and did not gain any until right after I left, but I think more of it comes from who they're paired with as an expansion franchise. The Hahalua are at worst the 3rd best ASFC team that I've covered so far, and I think I'd put them over the Silverbacks too, but they're paired with what might be the best expansion franchise in the history of the ISFL. I think that if the Hahalua were paired with any other expansion NSFC franchise, they'd look a hell of a lot better by comparison, whereas the Sailfish just overshadow the Hahalua in a lot of ways. As a standalone franchise, they are a franchise who has had its ups and downs, but its ups are probably the second best stretch of play we've seen from a team since the switch to the new sim.
