Does creating your player in time to only play in a single game count as horrible timing or great timing? Obviously, it would have been better to create JUST after the trade deadline to really maximize the AC’s and PT’s. But at least this way I was able to do get at least 1 week of AC & PTs banked and see some game action.
Dunkler officially joined the Grey Ducks in week 12, but due to contract and visa issues he was not able to play right away. MIN lost week 12 pretty handily to TIJ, but week 13 was a close L to NOR 16-28. We’ll just say Dunkler was learning the playbook and settling into an apartment. He was glad to make it on a team for S45 with a shot at making the playoffs.
The week 14 game against the Buccaneers would turn out to be a nailbiter, and an ultimately sad outcome for the Duck faithful. The game began with neither team crossing midfield on their first possessions. MIN had a 3 and out on their 2nd possession, however the Buccaneers were able drive down and get into the endzone with some efficient passing. The Ducks would answer back on a 16 play drive that took the game into the 2nd quarter.
The rest of the 2nd quarter was a sloppy mess. Bondi Beach was winning the field position battle by driving to just over the 50 yard line before having to punt it away to the Ducks. The teams traded punts again, and then an interception by the BBB bot corner Cheese Emporium setup the Buccs for a field goal. Dunkler recorded his first career tackle and tackle for loss on this drive. Looks like it was actually a TFL for a loss of 0 yards, but I’ll take it! Blood for the Sim God! Multiple sacks of Ducks QB Tuna TurnDaBallOva kept MIN from evening things up. Halftime score of 7-10 in favor of BBB.
The second half started off with a BBB 3 and out, followed by a costly red zone pick thrown by the Ducks. MIN caught a break though as a poor BBB punt gave them back some good field position. Tuna hit Squints JR for the touchdown to put the Ducks up 14-10 at 2:53 in the 3rd. Bondi Beach couldn’t get much going on their next possession, but a huge punt by Wynn Jenkins forced the Ducks to start from their own 11 yard line. The Ducks were forced to punt away at the start of the 4th quarter. Buccaneers begin a steady drive that stalled just shy of the red zone. Dunkler picks up his 2nd and final tackle for the game on a short run stop this drive. BBB hits the long 52 yard field goal to make the game 14-13 MIN. A MIN 3 and out, followed by a BBB three and out, followed by yet another MIN 3 and out set the Buccaneers up on their own 25, 4:40 left in the game and 1 point shy of the lead.
Moderate gains by the Buccs offense pushed them up the field before they broke the biggest play of the game on a 33 yard pass to Ian Degon with 2:38 remaining. This got them to the MIN 25, well within FG range for the lead. Bondi Beach would not need to settle for that as they were able to use their timeouts and get the go ahead touchdown with 1:37 left. The 2 point conversion did not convert, and the Ducks took over trailing 14-19 and 1:21 remaining. Aided by some costly defensive penalties, the Ducks put together their best drive of the game. Starting at their 17 they connected on 5 separate passes for first downs, getting all the way to the 3 yard line with no timeouts and 8 seconds left on the clock! You can probably guess where this goes, as the sim decided this was the perfect time to spike the ball and end the game.
It would have been legendary to see the Ducks make the playoffs on a final play at the goal line. But it wasn’t meant to be. I’m glad to get the 1 game experience at least and ready for more next season.
