The DSFL and NSFL seasons are yet to conclude, and pre-draft rumours are already bubbling to the surface of the pot that is the NSFL media landscape.
A source - who has requested to remain anonymous - has informed beat writers in Kansas City, Baltimore, and Yellowknife of an interesting pair of guests attending the Conference Championship matchup between the Portland Pythons and Kansas City Coyotes in Portland, Oregon.
Spike Crown, general manager of the Yellowknife Wraiths, and Kurt Hendrix, star defensive end for the Baltimore Hawks, were both spotted amongst the throng of fans at the DSFL's penultimate game. While a number of top-rated prospects were on display in the Coyotes' 24 - 17 upset road win over the Pythons, many are speculating the pair were in town to hold private talks with projected first overall pick Howard Miller.
While it may at first appear innocent for a Hawks player to be in attendance, especially given the team's failure to make playoffs meant players were free to turn their attention to other games in the league, Hendrix is known to have played a prominent role behind the scenes in Baltimore for a number of seasons, leading many of the team's beat writers to label him a 'player-manager'.
Currently, the Colorado Yeti hold the first overall pick in the S7 NSFL draft. However, they spent a first-round pick on star receiver Dwayne Aaron prior to the start of this season, and may instead look to trade back and maximise their draft capital in an effort to recover from the league's first ever 0 - 14 season.
The second pick in the draft belongs to the New Orleans Second Line, who have notable ties to Miller. Brian Mills, the first player to be selected by the rebranded franchise and former Tijuana Luchadore, was a teammate of Miller's briefly during their final two games of the S5 regular season, and for their playoff loss.
As such, neither the Hawks nor the Wraiths would have an easy time making their way to the top of the draft order. Certainly, the choice to draft Miller would not be a cheap one and would mean surrendering a number of later draft picks.
There is no news as yet as to whether the San Jose SaberCats, the original team of Miller's manager Ben Longshaw, are interested in the star receiver. With Jackson and Weston already on their roster, it is understandable that the SaberCats may be looking to bolster their roster elsewhere.
The Philadelphia Liberty camp has been particularly quiet. With that said, given their push for the Ultimus it is not surprising. Look for their camp to make more noise once the season comes to a close, for better or worse.
The Orange County Otters are also likely focusing their attention on the Ultimus, as they aim to tie the Arizona Outlaws' record of three consecutive championship wins. However, Angus Winchester, another player seen as a toeing the line between player and member of the front office, is known to be outspoken in his belief of retaining draft picks rather than reaching for big-name players.
Finally, the Arizona Outlaws, perhaps the only team with no known reason to have remained silent during the Miller sweepstakes, may yet have a role to play in what unfolds leading up to the draft. Only time will tell which team pulls the trigger on the DSFL's leading receiver, and exactly what that pull of the trigger will cost.
