It's game day. Football fans in America are waking up to the smell of preseason, and fans elsewhere across the globe are warding off sleep, anticipation for kickoff coursing through their veins like caffeine. The sun is shining on Burial Grounds. It's game day.
The NSFL's inaugural season is only hours away from launching, and while fans and players alike are eager to start the show, GM's across North America are likely to be eyeing the clock with mounting anxiety. Months of preparation. Countless hours spent poring over potential draft picks. But was it all in vain?
It was evident from the first round that each team's GM had a different strategy heading into draft day. While some have philosphies that share similarities, the ways in which they've gone about building their teams have been in stark contrast to one another. Today, we get our first glimpse at who got it all right, and who got it all wrong.
There is likely to be no game that garners more interest from other GM's than the face-off between the San Jose SaberCats and the Yellowknife Wraiths. Both teams have put together formidable offensive lines: each team has three lineman in the top 10 overall, and Yellowknife boast two in the top 4. With that said, San Jose look to have the slight edge on paper, purely due to having an additional lineman.
There was a lot of talk leading up to the draft regarding what value the offensive line actually had. With the very clear lack of talent at the position, would even a superstar blocker be able to make a difference if his only help against an incredibly deep defensive pool is a bunch of camp bodies? Would anything less than a complete offensive line be a liability? Or would the unsung heroes of the trenches prove to be the deciding factor in the fledgling football competition's first season?
Today, we may get our first answers to those questions. With so much of the top offensive line talent concentrated in one game, one team having a nearly complete line and the other fielding both the best linebacker and defensive end groups, the showdown in Yellowknife could prove to be a crucial insight for GM's into how to dominate trench warfare.
