Alright so we have some big games tonight with playoff implications:
Where we stand now:
TIJ, SA, and POR have already clinched a playoff spot. POR has clinched HFA in the first round of the playoffs. KC is still fighting with Norfolk for the last NFC playoff spot.
What's to be determined:
For the SFC Championship
Given that they play two bot teams, it seems that TIJ has a really good chance at HFA in the first round. Excluding the possibility of ties because I don't want to take the time to figure them out, the only two ways that SA can win HFA are if:
A) TIJ loses both games and SA win both games, or
B) TIJ loses to Solarbears and SA wins both games while outscoring TIJ by more than 83 points.
Even if TIJ loses to NOR but beats PB and SA wins both games, conference record tie breaker would be in TIJ's favor.
For the NCF Championship
As mentioned, Portland has already clinched a playoff spot and HFA in the first round. As far as the remaining playoff spot, NOR and KC both have the hardest schedules as they have to play POR&TIJ and POR&SA respectively. Both teams have the same overall record and conference record and are only separated by 10 points scored over the course of the season. They each play one conference and one non-conference opponent and don't play each other. Its about as even as it gets. I suspect KC will be able to pull if off if for no other reason than because they should have a slightly easier time with SA and because they should have a higher ceiling than a bot team. Additionally, KC will be playing both games at home, while Norfolk will only play one at home. Either way, it'll be fun to watch--we may have the first bot team in the playoffs since that fated season--RIP.
For the Ultimini
The game between the Marshals and Luchadores will be a classic as it has been all season. The teams are 2-2 this season with the last two games coming down to overtime. The Luchadores might be seen as slight favorites, but only barely.
The game between the Pythons and either KC or Norfolk is slated to be lopsided. We know that Portland will have home-field advantage and Coyotes and Seawolves are a combined 1-12 on the road this season while Pythons have a 5-1 home record. The Ultimini will likely feature the Pythons for the second straight season.
But who will have home field advantage?
The case for Kansas City/the case for Norfolk: If Portland is upset in the NFC conference championship, it will likely be the winner of the SFC championship (TIJ or SA). The only way KC or NOR will be able to win HFA in the Ultimini is if they win both games tonight and San Antonio loses both games tonight. Both teams hold a comfortable lead over San Antoino in total points scored. Assuming Portland will win their playoff game, HFA in the Ultimini will be decided by the games tonight as well.
The case for San Antonio: In addition to beating Tijuana in the conference championship, San Antonio's chances at HFA are almost the same as those stated above. SA needs to win both games while Portland loses both, or if Portland loses only one game, SA needs to win both while outscoring the Pythons by 76+ points.
The case for Tijuana/the case for Portland: We can discuss these together because they are basically the same. Currently, both teams have the same record and almost the same points scored. If both teams win out, it will come down to the total points for. Currently, Tijuana has the lead by 7. If both teams lose out, Tijuana would win the tiebreaker with a better conference record. If both teams go 1-1, it depends on the results. If Tijuana's win is against Palm Beach, then Tijuana clinches HFA. If Tijuana loses to Palm Beach, it will come down to total points scored again.
There you have it. Those are the implications for tonight's games. Unless I'm wrong. In which case you wasted your time.
Go Lucha.
