Week 1: Week in Review
Week one was pretty eventful, what with the sim drama and all that. There were several great games that were played and they set the stage for a great season 15. Let’s go over what we saw this week and what we can get from it.
Yeti vs. Hawks, Hawks win 63-13
Game Summary: This one looked bad from the beginning. The Yeti don’t have a lot of talent on the roster and the Hawks are the opposite. Micycle is retiring at the end of the season and regression is hitting hard. He threw a pick six in the first quarter, and wasn’t much better the rest of the game. On the other side of the ball, the defense was completely horrible, allowing 8 touchdowns. Childish Gambino looks like an MVP candidate and it’s possible that he breaks his single season passer rating record. He spread the ball around, hitting seven different receivers multiple times each. On defense, Arbin Asipi III looked amazing and deserves his Defensive Player of the Week win. The Yeti are going to be awful this season and I expect the opposite from the Hawks.
Bold Prediction: Childish Gambino will be a unanimous MVP this season.
Outlaws vs. Wraiths, Wraiths win 26-21
Game Summary: This game was much better than the last one. The Wraiths scored on a passing touchdown with just under 30 seconds left and the Outlaws couldn’t answer. Both teams had great performances from their young talent. Cooter Bigsby was solid in his NSFL debut, with 250 yards and a TD with just one pick. The Outlaws’ rookies were great as well. Leighton Lee was the high point with 7 tackles, a sack, and 2 pass deflections. Lamont McKinnie was also solid with 14 tackles and a deflection. T. Rash on the Outlaws was pretty bad however, as he had 2 penalties for 20 yards and he gave up the one sack the Wraiths got. The run games for these teams were very strong, but what I found odd was that Morgan Marshall came in right away and got the most carries for Yellowknife, a team which has a very talented RB already with Dick Wizardry.
Bold Prediction: One or both of these teams will be in the playoffs.
Otters vs. Second Line, Otters win 34-19
Game Summary: A decent game between a team who just made the playoffs with the best record in the league and a team who was well under .500. Gus Showbiz threw for 4 touchdowns despite his turnover problem. New Orleans was unable to capitalize on the 4 interceptions that Showbiz threw. They were 3/18 on third down and Borkus Maximus completed under 50% of his passes. There were a lot of missed opportunities for the Second Line. Their passing game is also pretty one dimensional with Fyodorovich having almost triple the yardage of the next best receiver for New Orleans. The Otters also had a decent 4th quarter comeback, scoring 27 unanswered after Showbiz got cooking towards the end. New Orleans needs to do better in the second game or they are going to have a problem.
Bold Prediction: The Second Line will have the worst offense in the league this season.
Sabercats vs. Liberty, Sabercats win 22-16
Game Summary: The Ultimus rematch turns out as a solid game. The Sabercats rallied from a 10 point deficit and Joliet Christ threw for a go ahead touchdown in a tie game with 9 seconds remaining. The most impressive performance, however, may be from Neo Donaldson who had a great punting game with a 49 yard average and 345 total punting yards. Outside of his missed extra point(which wouldn’t have mattered anyway) he played nearly flawlessly. Philadelphia had no run game, as Vander Jones disappointed in his first game at running back. There’s really not too much to say about this games, there weren’t too many super great performances but the game itself was very solid and if these teams met in the Ultimus again I think we can all expect a game that lives up to the hype.
Bold Prediction: San Jose will be the top seed in the ASFC
