The Chicago Butchers have made it clear that despite being one of the two latest teams to join the NSFL, they want to compete right away. Somewhat of a lofty expectation even with the moves the team has already made to build up what looks like a solid roster on paper, but it was clear that the first draft in franchise history was going to be a critical part of their success both in the near term and of course the long term in cementing the culture of the team. Dermot Lavelle Jr was easily the highest rated player in this class across the board and certainly the most well known considering his NSFL bloodline. But cornerback was one position the Butchers found themselves having the most depth at, and considering the harsh demands coming from Lavell Jr for his future team Chicago found themselves going a different direction with the first two overall picks in the draft and Lavelle eventually went to the Butchers defacto rivals, the Austin Copperheads. Let’s take a look at who the Chicago Butchers ended up taking in their inaugural draft class.
Round 1, Pick 1: Sam Torenson, RB, Portland Pythons @Jonny2x
An absolute home run with the first overall pick in the draft for Chicago. Torenson is absolutely the kind of player that you can start to build a young franchise around with his insane work ethic and team first mentality. The former defensive tackle fills a need for Chicago on offense but his versatility will allow him to be used as a weapon in multiple formations and positions, giving the team some flexibility in how they continue to construct their roster for the future. While there may be some questions about how ready Torenson will be considering he’s still learning a new position, his dedication to transform his body in such a short time and his natural athleticism will allow him to make this transition much more easily than most players. Torenson will have an immediate impact both on and off the field for the Butchers and I wouldn’t be surprised if he was an offensive captain for this team before long.
Round 1, Pick 2: Blake Faux, LB, Portland Pythons @AlexF
Chicago goes back to the Portland well once more and selects Blake Faux. Faux was a bit overshadowed by the attention that Lavelle Jr drew in this draft, but make no mistake he’s the real deal and was the number one defensive player on a lot of big boards because he doesn’t bring the kind of baggage that Lavelle Jr does. Once again, Chicago grabs a player that has a ton of versatility with his ability to go toe to toe with TEs in coverage, stuff running backs (125 tackles and 2 TFL in DSFL) and even rush the passer (4 sacks in DSFL). It’s certainly a cliche to say, but Faux really can be a swiss army knife on this defense. With strength on the defensive line and in the secondary, linebacker was a big need on this defense especially with Lightsout Lewis making the transition to safety this offseason. I think it’s safe to say Chicago got the right man for the job on this one.
Round 2, Pick 1: Ben Tu’inukuafe @Ben
The steal of the draft. Seriously, these other teams just somehow let this absolute specimen of a player fall all the way to the second round? Not only is he extremely well spoken, beguilingly charming, devilishly handsome, inhumanly strong, a gentleman and a scholar, a real gym rat, and a real hoot at parties, but his name is Ben and many great men throughout history share that name so you know he is destined for greatness. Offensive linemen are a bit of an odd proposition in the NSFL since the introduction of OL bots many seasons ago, but if you can find a great human one, it can absolutely give your offense an advantage that is nearly impossible to come by in the league right now. It will take young Master Benjamin time to reach that level. Not much time, mind you, as his mind and body have been scientifically proven to work 107.4% more efficiently than the average man, but still some time nonetheless. The “Ben” player agency has shown to produce superior talent in the league before and I believe, nay I know, that will be the case once again with Tu’inukuafe. GMs around the league will be kicking themselves for seasons to come just for the missed potential of having Ben to spice up their locker rooms alone.
