I find myself sat across Prospect Bowl Safety Wesley Eriksen. He takes a drink from a cup of water and glances at the clock behind my head. "How long is this going to take?" He asks, "I've got another game in about 8 seconds." We're in a La Quinta inn situated outside the stadium where Baltimore is set to take on Cincinnati mere moments from now.
I assuage his fears, "Don't worry, time doesn't exist here. I wanted to talk to you about your performance in what turned out to be a very defensive showcase," Eriksen nods along and motions to a production assistant to fill his cup. "How do you feel your performance stacked up?"
After finishing his second glass of water Eriksen speaks, "Frankly I think I was one of the better players out there, although I have to give credit to my teammates, players like Phat Boi and Lanier really took some pressure off, and Ed gave me enough cover to sneak into the backfield a couple times. It's a shame about that pick six, I thought the defensive unit played well."
"That's right, you recorded a sack and tackled a receiver on a play that went back ten yards. Can you tell me anything about that?"
"Yeah, I saw Waters dancing around trying to keep the play alive and was going for the sack before he dumped it off to Koh right in front of me. I was the right guy in the right place I guess." It was a big stop on third down, but unfortunately a quick turnover began and ended the Muleriders posession, and ultimately, Prospect Bowl hopes. "The offense just couldn't get things going, early in the fourth I asked the coach if he could give me a chance catching balls, but I guess the ironman days are over." Eriksen once again gestures for a glass of water. It is promptly delivered, as one would expect from La Quinta Inns & Suites.
"Does an early loss tamper your excitement for the upcoming game? Nobody really knows what happens when all teams go 1-1."
"I try not to concern myself with the game to game goings-on. Obviously context is important for every game, but it's always been my opinion that you should play one play at a time. We're not going to go out there expecting to lose, and we're not going to go out there trying to force things for a win. I just know my assignments, and I play to do the best job I can."
"I think you're a great athlete and any team would be lucky to have you. And you're handsome, just so handsome. One last question, Who are you hoping drafts you tomorrow? If your tweets are any indication, you've gotten attention from a few programs."
Eriksen laughs, "That's right. Myrtle Beach would be a great destination and I know they're in need at safety. They seem to have a winning culture I would be proud to be a part of. And the Ducks seem interested as well, I feel like I could do a lot of good in their program. At the end of the day though, it's the folks in Dallas that have a culture I would love to be a part of. They've got a lot to grow into, but I think they'd be a great place to develop and advance my game."
"Thanks for taking the time, Wesley."
"It took no time at all."
Eriksen went on to record 10 tackles and deflect a pass in a 26-0 annihilation of Cincinatti. He's currently projected to go within the top 300 picks in the DSFL Draft.
